Reviews with Lyndon Blue
HOPE SANDOVAL & THE WARM INVENTIONS @ ASTOR THEATRE, MONDAY JUNE 28
Toasters, kettles, combustion engines, irons, snuggies, microwaves: these are all warm inventions. Monday night was by no means a warm evening, and the idea of remaining tucked away at home, utilizing some or all of the aforementioned devices, was certainly tempting. Yet there I was on a Mount Lawley street corner, huddled inside a trenchcoat beneath scrolling LED lights. Like myself, a moderate crowd of chillyfolk had arrived to wrap their ears around the strains of a passing Californian named Hope Sandoval, formerly of Mazzy Star, now backed by some musical Warm Inventions of her own. Little did I know the night was to be a carousel of moods and emotions – intrigue, wonder, frustration, confusion, tranquil merriment and thirst – all played out within the ornate art deco walls of the Astor Theatre.

Instinct and Intuition
All functioning animals perform particular actions in order to survive. Everything eats, sleeps, shits and fucks. However, the amount of actions that are learned and the amount that come instinctively to the individual depends on the species. Some species are born to survive, others must learn. And in humans, it is generally believed that we no longer have many technical instincts left. It’s a Wednesday, and I know you all want to know some gross facts. No messing around, here you go:
Human beings are born into the world as helpless and complaining meat sacks. We are, on all counts, dependant on our parents/guardians for food and shelter, and protection from ourselves when we start to walk and bump into things. In the first few years of life, no human child could possibly look after itself, despite the presence of some instinctive reflexes, like searching for the nipple, gripping tightly to anything near your hands...

Playhouse presents LOVEBites
Onward Production is thrilled to bring LOVEBiTES to Perth audiences, fresh from two sell out seasons in Sydney and heading to New York later in the year, LOVEBiTES is an entertaining and joyous musical journey about 6 couples in love and what happens after the confetti settles.
Catching one-half of each couple in the instant that love strikes and then hearing from their other-half about how it ended up, LOVEBiTES is a mad-capped evening about loving, leaving and leaping into the joyful (or not-so-joyful) unknown.

TOM O'HALLORAN TRIO - (Homecoming) - A Jazz Windows eventMonday
Admission Members $10 Student members $8 Non-members $15. At 8pm.
'Pianist, composer and conductor Tom O’Halloran led his trio in a sparkling set full of rhythmic teamwork, subtle or sudden gear shifts, zipping pace and dancing lyricism that has characterized the jazz piano trio tradition' – John Clare SMH.
What a great musical experience we can look forward to when the Tom O’Halloran trio returns to Perth after its Australian National Tour. Tom is one of those musicians that come along once in a decade and with Peter Jeavons (bass) and Daniel Susnjar (drums) this is surely one of the super trios around.

LAUNCH THEIR EP ‘WE MAKE PARTY’ ON JULY 16 AT AMPLIFER BAR, PERTH AND JULY 23 AT SETTLERS TAVERN, MARGARET RIVER
Perth indie-rock band good little fox are ready to unleash a new EP called ‘We Make Party’ (out August 6 through independent/MGM) that will have you dancing on the most bounciest part of your shoe.
Since coming together in late 2006 the band has released the singles Jealousy and Love, Lust and Interest, received radio airplay on Triple J, and have shared the stage with Jebediah, Hoodoo Gurus, The Paper Scissors, Abdoujaparov (UK) and The Getaway Plan.
While they’ve been on a hiatus of late (mainly due to vocalist/guitarist Carl Fox jetting off to Switzerland and releasing an indietronica album called Chunky Rainbow) the trio are back with a musical offering encompassing driving guitars, flamboyant bass lines and plenty of expletives guaranteed to cause offense and/or dancing.
It’s all happening on Friday, July 16 at Amplifier Bar, Perth with support from brazen rock’n’rollers The Jackards and new-wave rockers Luna Parade. 8pm. Tickets $10 on the door or $15 with a CD.
The Perth show is followed by a launch down south on Friday, July 23 at Settlers Tavern, Margaret River with support from acoustic singer/songwriter Tree. 9:30pm. Free entry.

PICA's Winter Exhibitions
loads coming up at pica ..
PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.
Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.
Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!
In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.
