Reviews with Lyndon Blue
AUTUMN TREES IN THE SUMMER: A REVIEW OF ERASERS' NEW CASSETTE TAPE RELEASE
As I hopped off the bus, it became clear that recent glimpses of an approaching sunny season had abandoned me. Indeed, the stroll thenceforth to my hobbit-hole was a thoroughly moist one; plump raindrops tickled the street and I cursed the punctures in my shoesoles that allowed a my socks to transform into sopping chamois. When I reached my abode however, a parcel awaited me to assuage my wintery woes. It was, simply put, ‘Summer’ in an envelope. That’s the name of...

long live vampires
I have always had a fear/fascination with zombies. As soon as I was old enough to understand what a Zombie was, I've been terrified of the Zompocalypse. Like, actually think it might happen one day, have dreams about it, watch films, get involved, had stoned paranoia, affect the way I look at people when I walk down the street at night, the way I view society as a whole, all of that. And then I stopped smoking pot, stopped watching so many zombie films, and suddenly the world is full of people who are MASSIVELY into vampires. So I indulged a little. I've always been intrigued, mainly because...

NOT TOO PROUD: A REVIEW OF PEPPER'S THE PRIDE
Sitting opposite upcoming young director Zoe Pepper there is an air of casual contemplation in her expression. She finishes her latte and pours another glass of water mid-sentence without missing a beat and though she’s certainly aware of the importance her art form can have on commentary of society, Pepper never lets herself get too far ahead of what’s at hand. “Really the primary objective is to emotionally engage an audience” she shyly murmurs, “that there are characters that an audience can identify with and recognise”. So then why...

Play Scar Perth Album Launch
Wednesday September 1, 8pm
The Ellington Jazz Club, 191 Beaufort St, Perth
Chris Abrahams launches his new album Play Scar (Room 40), at Perth's premier jazz venue, The Ellington Jazz Club, on Wednesday September 1 from 8pm. Support comes from local guitar/noise maestro Craig McElhinney.
Chris Abrahams is best known for his work as the pianist for The Necks. In addition to his work with the Sydney-based jazz trio, Abrahams has a career stretching back over 25 years, including solo albums, several collaborations with Melanie Oxley, as well as in soundtrack composition.
Play Scar rolls from minimalism to musique concrete as Abrahams builds sweeping aural landscapes and hypnotic rhythm. Despite being full of diversity and juxtaposition, the record still manages to form a complete and coherent whole. Play Scar has rightly received brilliant reviews - it is a challenging, complex and breathtakingly beautiful body of work.

smRts album launch
rosemount hotel
Local instrumental combo smRts are launching their debut album “sun sets on a new tomorrow” at the Rosemount Hotel on Friday 10 September 2010.
“sun sets on a new tomorrow” was recorded by one of smRts’ guitarist Matt Bairstow and Will Hooper (Wind Waker’s bassist). Recording took place at smRts’ practice place by using a dozen of microphones carefully placed on the equipment and around the room. Matt has then spent a couple of months mixing the tracks and the recordings were sent to Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma) at Chicago Mastering Services for final mastering.
The end result is 35 minutes of heart-warming upbeat melancholic melodies and strong rhythms. “sun sets on a new tomorrow” takes on European late 60s/early 70s pop and surf music and dives into the depths of Eastern European traditional and classical music.
The album will be launched on Friday 10 September 2010 at the Rosemount Hotel with special guests: awesome jazz youngsters Rolling Pin, surf/prog trio Wind Waker and favourite newcomers Erasers. $10, doors open 8pm.

LOW
The Bakery
Low bring their mesmerizingly brilliant and critically-acclaimed brand of indie rock to the newly-refurbished Bakery on Saturday, October 23.
Formed in 1993 in Duluth, Minnesota, Low are famed for their stark and unique sound (often referred to as slowcore) that recalls the drama of Joy Division, the intensity of Big Black and the harmony of a church choir.
Drums and Guns, the band's latest album, features minimalist drum loops working alongside subtle melody to lay the foundations for chilling vocal harmonies that are, as always, the heart of Low's sound.
Performing material from across their entire catalogue, Low's live show wraps the audience in a web of breathtaking sonic intensity and magnetic songsmithery.
With local support from Schvendes and Erasers, this promises to be an unmissable night of spine-tingling harmonies and starkly beautiful soundscapes.
Tickets are $44 + bf from 78 Records, Mills Records, Planet Video and the new Bakery ticketing website as of Wednesday, August 18.

THE BEAUFORT STREET FESTIVAL 2010
Life is Noise, The Beaufort Street Network and Town of Vincent present...
Saturday, November 27 in Beaufort Street, Highgate and Mount Lawley.
Beaufort Street has always been at the heart of cool, alternative, independent culture in Perth, so its high time that we got a festival to celebrate the music, art, fashion and food that make the precinct so special.
The Beaufort Street Festival will showcase the cutting-edge talent and diversity of Perths musicians, artists, designers and culinary tastemakers on Saturday November 27.
Perth's cultural hub will come alive with unique, quirky and stylish displays of bands, temporary art exhibitions and fashion parades, with the action taking place on the streets, in shops, cafes, bars and laneways.
The festival is the brainchild of the Beaufort Street Network, a collective of local businesses and residents, and they're looking for help to make the event a representation of all that the Beaufort Street precinct has to offer. Accordingly, the Network is putting the call-out for community involvement.
If there's something youd like to see be part of the festival, or if youd simply like to volunteer your time, contact Festival Director Dave Cutbush on 0400 498 362 or at festival@beaufortstreet.com.au.

Phife Dawg & Ali Shaheed Muhumad of A Tribe Called Quest
THE BAKERY
Two members of one of the biggest hip hop groups of all time – Phife D & Ali, are coming to Perth for the very first time, in the closest thing to A Tribe Called Quest that Perth will ever get.
Following massive sell-out shows of Tribe in Sydney and Melbourne last week (in only two shows they’ve played in the Southern Hemisphere during the entire course of their 20 year career) where the Hip Hop legends blew the roof off the venues, Phife D & Ali will return to Australia and travel to Perth for a show on Friday December 3 at the Bakery.
Phife D and Ali will take you on a guided tour down the Paths Of Rhythm as they present The Native Tongues Mixtape, a live recreation of Phife’s brand new solo material, classic Tribe Called Quest and Native Tongues tracks interwoven with covers from artists who have influenced the artistic careers of both Phife and Ali.
In addition, Phife D & Ali have confirmed that they’ve invited several other international guests from the Native Tongues stable to share the stage with them on their Australian dates. Keep watching www.peacemusic.com.au for more information on this unique, groundbreaking hip-hop event.
Friday 3rd December TICKETS - $50 + BF

The Blue Room & Side Pony Productions Present
the pride
From the director of 2009's Heart of Gold, independent production house Side Pony Productions present their sixth theatrical production, The Pride at The Blue Room Theatre from 1 - 18 September, before touring to Brisbane Festival's BF10 Under The Radar curated fringe festival.
Mapping the social patterns of a lion’s life onto human characters dressed as lions (impressively crafted by Esther Sandler), The Pride further cements Side Pony Productions’ signature style: visually striking, black comedy at its darkest.
The Pride is directed by Zoe Pepper, whose previous works include Heart of Gold, The Manic Pony, Scarecrow, and Motor City Blues; and features the talents of Brendan Ewing (The Red Shoes, Antigone), Russell Leonard (Equus) and Adriane Daff (BSSTC’s 2010 HotBed Ensemble, Yellow Moon, The Shape of Things).

PICA's Winter Exhibitions
loads coming up at pica ..
PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.
Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.
Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!
In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.
i demand to know the dates of these exhibitions!

If you think you know where this clip is going, I assure you a surprise awaits. Delightful or damming - whatever you make of this, we hope you enjoy.
