album reviews with Lyndon Blue
THE SILENTS ALBUM LAUNCH @ THE BIRD, SATURDAY JUNE 12
“Surfin’ Bird,” the Trashmen’s demented compound of two Rivingtons covers, is one of my all-time favourite songs. Sounding like some traumatised ornithologist freaking out in a straightjacket, Steve Wahrer jabbers incessantly about a mystery avian that is supposedly the subject of great attention. A barrage of crusty guitars and drums underpin his psychotic ravings; in the brief intermission between the song’s two parts the vocals swoop into violent spasmic babble somewhere between laughter and retching.
While the relevance of that song to this review is dubious, the classic line “the bird is the word” has found fresh pertinence with Perth music-lovers, with new Northbridge venue The Bird laying some magnificently nutritious gig-eggs lately; and it was to that very venue that I set out from my nest to descend upon the northernmore launch of The Silent’s new album, Sun A Buzz. I’ve not seen these lads live since November, and for the most part since, they’ve largely been living up to their name. Tonight’s sonic blast, then, might just be something to crow about – but let’s not count our funking chickens before they’ve hatched!

Dreaming not sleeping
Sleeping is rad. It could possibly be one of my favourite things to do. And often this is because I dream in film format, with my own aesthetic style, and my friends all happen to be incredibly good actors in my head, and there’s no budget to worry about, and the set is already there and everything is easy and awesome… Dreams like this can be incredibly inspiring and enjoyable.
But what about when they’re not? What does it mean when you wake up from an intense nightmare, and you’re left feeling completely exhausted and can’t stop thinking about all the weird, upsetting stuff that your grey matter is coming up with? What does it mean when you dream about being thrown off a boat into the middle of the ocean and you can’t get back on it? What about flying dreams? Anything, seriously, do they actually mean anything at all? Is there an actual reason for dreaming? I propose that, despite the apparent “messages” we’re used to searching for, there is, in fact, none to be found.

The Myth of Julian Rose
Taking the Bull by the Horns
There is a fine line one must tread when artistically exploring dark subject matters. Daniel Kershaw’s The Myth of Julian Rose handles the difficult subject of abuse with care and intelligence. Directed by Marisa Garreffa (Motortown), The Myth of Julian Rose is able to delicately explore the traumatic haunting of abuse without pandering to melodrama or didactic storytelling.

"Sail Becomes A Kite" album launch
Amplifier Bar
Support from The Morning Night and Goodnight Tiger. Tickets available on the door. On their reflective second album, The Bank Holidays opt for autumnal hues in place of their usual summery sparkle. Sail Becomes a Kite is a surprising left-turn for The Bank Holidays, whose previous output has been exemplified by a giddy joyousness; still present however, among the moodier, more filmic atmosphere is the band's indisputable grasp of melody and compelling song-writing.

PICA's Winter Exhibitions
loads coming up at pica ..
PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.
Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.
Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!
In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.

Kosmic Sound & Jack Daniels Mojos Rising
A Happening at Mojos Bar, North Fremantle
Kosmic Sound & Jack Daniels Mojo Rising is full steam ahead! So far the winners of the first three heats are Sugarpuss, the Spitfires & James Teague (pictured right)!
These night have been extremely fun as the bands are playing casually rather than with a competitive mind set. This can be attributed to Justim Walshe’s disarming MC style – the guy is absolutely hilarious – he should win! Anyway.. Next Tuesday Auto suggestion, Georgi kay, the moltens & the love junkies have a crack at it! Get down it’s fun!
Mojo Rising Entrants are all in the running to record with Blackbird engineer/producer Dave Parkin. Dave is at the stage of his recording career where he chooses who he works with so the winner of this comp will be recording at a quality that they would not otherwise be able to. This is really important for a band! Kosmic are kicking in a $1,500 gift voucher to sweeten the deal for the first place getter.
