Mailout Soundtrack
Well gosh. Check out Lyndon Blue's review of in the Pines. He's reviewed each of the twenty acts and he's done it entirely in rhyme - nobel prize? Gobsmacked..
Tahlia's piece this week is about those that'd prefer to sit on the floor rather than dance at indie gigs.
There's a band comp with entry closing Saturday week, which all bands in Perth would want to win, as the winner will record with Dave Parkin as well as pick up loads of other practical assistance. Check out more about this in the further ahead section below..
This weeks mailout soundtrack comes from Gayngs. Click on the girl with the cigarette to hear them while chaving squiz. Ciao!

Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
IN THE PINES @ SOMERVILLE AUDITORIUM, SUNDAY MAY 2
Into the cool shade of green-needled branches,
came sun-dappled companies like small avalanches,
as a radio station brought forth this fine day,
its ‘piece de résistance’ (one might rightly say).
It’s called ‘In The Pines’ as you most likely know
an aboreal sanctum where bands and fans go
and rejoice in the marvels of all-local sound
whilst good food and good beer and good folk abound.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
Schopenhauer, dancing, hipsters and self analysis.
Back in the days when I would regularly attend live music shows, I noticed a phenomenon that was more pronounced among indie gigs than any other genre of the music scene: a complete lack of dancing, despite the audible beat that should enable one to do so quite successfully. On more than one occasion, I have heard the laments of others more willing to throw caution to the wind and do a jig; “Why the fuck don’t these boring indie dicks dance?” Well friends, let me try to explain.

"DAM_FUNK" (stones throw LA)
the MANOR
Think Twice, Highs and Lows and The Manor are proud to present the ambassador of Boogie-Funk, Dâm-Funk (Stones Throw - Los Angeles, California). Bursting on to the scene in 08-09, Dâm (pronounced 'Dame', as in Damon) won over a slew of fans from Disco-Boogie aficionados, the Beat scene, hardcore Hip Hop heads and Hipsters alike with his debut 12" 'Burgundy City/Galactic Fun.'
In 2009, he was one of Stones Throw busiest artists, putting out so much material you'd think he was giving Madlib a run for his money, with the 'Toeachizown' album being released digitally in five installments, all of which teased fans with different elements of his influences. During this time he also managed to put out a few mix CDs, a beat tape as part of Stones Throw's 'Rhythm Trax' series and turned in remixes for Red, Baron Zen and superstars Animal Collective. At the tail end of 2009, the album was released in 2CD and deluxe 5LP box set editions.
Calling his sound 'Modern Funk', Dâm-Funk's live show takes in both his impeccable DJ mixing style as well as a Live-PA style side which includes vocals and keyboards, showcasing both the original material he writes and records, and the records which have inspired him.
Don't miss the show everyone will be talking about for the rest of the year!
TICKETS:

Perth Jazz Society
FREDDIE GRIGSON QUARTET
Mon 10 May 2010 @ 8:00pm
Admission Members $10 Student members $5 Non-members $15
Freddie’s show on ‘Stormy Monday’ (22 March) was cancelled when Perth was inundated with ‘golf-ball’ hail and flooding. But tonight he’s playing, rain, hail or shine!
ONE of Australia’s finest guitarists, Freddie Grigson will be performing with a trio of young Titans this evening: Sean Phillips (drummer), Karl Florisson (bassist) and on piano, Tal Cohen. Freddie has worked with numerous jazz luminaries throughout the years and is currently lecturing at the Jazz Department at WAAPA. His seminal CD, Blue Zone that was recorded a few years ago, still packs a punch, as do his live performances.
Freddie's extensive influences range from jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Jim Hall to contemporary masters like Pat Martino, John Scofield and John Abercombie. He is an excellent example of the consummate musician – ‘taste, chops and imagination.’

Masonik plays Sepia Tone
Kulcha- Saturday, May 15
Masonik play Sepia Tone
Two massive sets, two musical styles . . . turned on their heads.
Set 1 - DECOMPOSED. Australian jazz legend, sax player Paul (Pax) Andrews has been active in the Oz Jazz scene since the 70's. He has played with some our countries best musicians, Bebop Joe Lane, James Morrison & Bob Johnson to name a few. In this set Masonik challenges Pax's tradition of jazz. DECOMPOSED. This set will also feature renowned keyboardist Wheldon Thornley.
Set 2 - REBETIKA IN DUB. Between 1905 & 1938 a Greek underworld musical movement was recorded onto 78 records. This was the music of refugees run out of Turkey & abandoned by the Greeks. Rebetika themes include drug addiction, prostitution, alienation & death. In 1938 this music was crushed by the Greek government for it's subversive messages. Masonik will rekindle this dark & haunting period by sampling actual recordings from the period. Joined with Phil Everall on clarient & Phil Waldron on bass & Irish bouzouki. Rebetika in Dub is also a very personal journey for Masonik member Basil Psanoudakis who finds an affinity with the idea of being a Greek with fractured heritage. OutCast, culturally misplaced & drawn to an underworld. Phil Everall has recently returned from New York studying jazz & Phil Waldron has a extensive history playing in jazz,
classical & world ensembles.
Sepia Tone will also feature Masonik's famous live projected vj visuals of archival & unique Masonik graphics & video. Masonik's vj is Tony Monaco.
Sepia Tone . . . the past in dub.

Female Transport at Old Mill Theatre
THE Old Mill Theatre is taking a trip back to 1807 at the end of April with a play set aboard a convict ship on its way to Australia.
Female Transport, directed by Hywel Williams, follows the story of six women convicts on their six-month journey aboard the Sydney Cove and their determination to survive the conditions below the decks.
Actor Phil Barnett, playing Sarge in the play, said that while Female Transport is classified as a drama there are plenty of lighter moments and earthy humour as the six women try to get the better of their captors.
Written by Steve Gooch in 1973, Hwyel Williams has taken on the job of directing Female Transport for the Old Mill Theatre, five years after he originally directed it for Phoenix Theatre.
Playwright Gooch is an experienced dramatist Steve and author of more than 40 scripts. His career as a writer and teacher includes stage plays, adaptations, radio and screenplays, as well as the popular series The Cut Shakespeare.
Joining Barnett in the cast are Kirstie Francis, Kyla Jones, Melissa Kiiveri, Jocelyn O’Neil, Kate O’Sullivan, Ariel Simone, Damien Nott, Adam Dear and Tim Prosser.
Female Transport plays at 8pm, April 23, 24, 28, 29, May 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 with a 2pm matinee on May 2. Tickets are $20, $15 concession – book on 9367 8719.
