Lyndon Blue live reviews..
________________________
Bariken @ Kulcha, Saturday August 1
For now, let us put aside sushi, sake, origami, anime, scientific whale research and peculiar erotica; our focus is on two other things that Japan does exceedingly well: rock music, and video games. INSERT COINS
LEVEL ONE: WIND WAKER
You clamber up the twisting stairwell to find yourself in the dimmed chamber of the Kulcha temple, a triforce of experimental pop known as Wind Waker floating before you in a pool of amber light. Nestled in their minimal, rustic post-punk boat you sail through warm Caribbean bays and mystic eastern lagoons, each new course underpinned by the perpetual current of tenacious math-rocky skinsmanship. A sonorous siren at the helm emits a voice like a hurricane; luckily it’s employed sparingly enough for you to regain your balance. You’re hearing the sounds of a group with yet unrealized potential – but whose youthful magic is already palpable and refreshing, a sultry swirling breeze.
LEVEL TWO: INJURED NINJA
Suddenly, four stealthy, hairy assassins descend upon you – and in their shroud of loudness, befuddle you. You are divided, as if sliced by a katana: on the one hand, Injured Ninja are brilliantly devoted to their freakish fuzztronic grooves, uncompromising in their near-nihilistic approach to songcraft. On the other hand, there are some fingers missing – the ‘Ninja’s infatuation with seething weirdness eventually grows gimmicky rather than substantively interesting, and paired with metal and dubstep elements occasionally hints at wholly twattish nu-metal funkwank. The aptness of their name resounds in your think-tank - nimble, skilled and cutthroat, a ninja indeed – but an injured one nevertheless, and you feel your life points dwindle ever so slightly.
LEVEL THREE: BAMODI
Bamodi emerges from its hibernation pod – its three members the three heads of a mighty Cerebrus who, despite appearing at first vicious and underworldy, really just want to have fun. Akin to gritty New York no-wave with the sinewy bass of history’s most grooving punk, Bamodi meld a mentally engaging artistry with instinctual rollicking exuberance to please both brain and body. You grin a mile-wide grin. Singer Kenta’s high, ruthless whinny hits you with all the unexpected but enjoyable tartness of cranberry juice. All is well.
FINAL STAGE: BARIKEN
Flown fresh from the land of the rising sun, there rises into view a Tokyo duo so dynamic they make Batman and Robin seem comatose. A drummer perched atop his kit, clad in outrageous fluorescent patterned leggings, drops into position and Bariken blast off into a hyperactive onslaught resembling the conjoined nightmares of Lightning Bolt and Polysics. Frantic punk beats and effected buzzsaw guitar compete with screeched Japanese vocals in the mix, roaring ever upwards in a sweaty raging geyser, the frenzied aural dynamite detonating into a pair of stage-dives at the end of the brief but destructive blitz. You are buried in electricity. A sense of euphoric abandon bubbles through the room. In the video game world, Bariken would surely be Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails the Fox - breaking sound barriers and leaving trails of annihilation. In the real world they are an ingenious young noise
punk outfit who, having already toured with the likes of Melt-Banana in their home country, are now stunning Australian crowds and seem destined for yet greater things. Congratulations – you have witnessed the brutal, blistering, ball-busting bombardment that is Bariken – stage cleared!

Sunday, 16 August

Headed by the anguished murmur of lost soul and hardworking man Ben Blakeney, the Jack on Fire chain gang includes WA compatriots Samantha Wass, Dave Thirkettle-Watts and George Hyde sharing all manner of vocal and hollow-bodied tasks, along with Ross Goodale on drums. Sealing their fate and consummating their conversion to the other side is Melbournian addition Kelly Lane on violin
