Mailout Soundtrack
Firtsly though, hello to all the new subscribers. Lyndon's review that we printed in Drum Mag attracted a swarm of you guys - it's a pleasure to keep your company. *tilts headforward on slight angle with earnest smile signifying gratitude*
This week Lyndons Pines review has been included once more - in the dj world as they might say - if it's nice play it twice. Also he takes us DEEP inside a Monday night house gig which happened earlier this week.
Tahlia's piece gravitates round not taking music for granted in the sense of where it came, comes and will keep cming from. The musical drive.
Mojos band comp is stacked up with entrants and this Friday is your last day to enter - further info available in further ahead or via
www.facebook.com/mojorisingbandcomp
This week's mailout soundtrack comes from Vorad Fils. Mad, spacious and very authentic electronica/beats/AREAS from Sydney. Click on the Apollo rocket to hear them.
Ecstatic Peace! xxx

Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
LIVE RECORDING PARTY @ PERTHECTIONIST VINYL RECORDING STUDIO, MONDAY MAY 10 //// that pines review
I really had no idea where I was, or what I was doing. The painted sign near the fence spelled ‘ENTRY’ – but to what, exactly? No house number, but this must be the place, I surmised. I slinked down the moonlit sand driveway until I was splashed by the deep flickering amber of a bonfire, and penetrated nasally by toxin-sweet aerosol fumes, expelled from paint cans sprayed strategically on nearby hard-boards. A few metres beyond stood a cluster of men in black metal-band tees and hoodies, clutching stubbies, puffing cigarettes, sprouting beards. I had never seen any of them before. I immediately encountered the surreal feeling of having just entered a slice of space and time to which I was entirely irrelevant. What in blue blazes was going on?

It’s called ‘In The Pines’ as you most likely know an aboreal sanctum where bands and fans go and rejoice in the marvels of all-local sound whilst good food and good beer and good folk abound.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
the musical drive / the musical drive / the musical drive / the musical drive / the musical drive
People have been creating music since... nearly forever. It is ubiquitous within human culture, evolving into all kinds of styles and genres based on our individual environment, upbringing and personal taste. But why is it that music even exists? It is an inherently human trait to want to express ourselves creatively, but why do we do it? What is it that drives a person to learn an instrument, create a piece of music, then want to distribute it among their fellow human?
Well, it all started in communication, baby. It wasn't long after humans developed speech that some guy heard a bird sing and was all “Holy shit, that is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.” One theory as to how babies first learn to speak is that they instinctively mimic the noises they hear. We are also slaves to our pleasure drives, and the process of listening to music can release similar dopamine levels to that of being stroked by a lover. It can definitely send bigger shivers down one's spine. So, take a look at the human race as an individual; in our infant stages, we heard a bird sing, it gave us pleasure, so it makes sense that we would have mimicked the tonal varieties in voice for make-benefit the rest of our tribe. After generations of practice, combined with the discovery that wind blowing through reeds can create a pleasing sound, and that two hard things
bashed together can replicate that sound we hear coming from deep within our chests, teenage humanity has found a way to express the things he thinks and feels, and communicate it to whoever is around to listen to it.

zxspecky
take 'high speed distorto pop' to bowls club
Perth's finest aficionados of fast, loud, catchy power chord tunes, zxspecky are set to headline the Lost In The Suburbz: Issue 5 Launch at Leederville Sporting Club, next Saturday 15 May from 8pm.
The Sporting Club, located at 78 Cambridge St. in West Leederville, features bowling greens and is often used for functions.
Meanwhile, zxspecky, who have long described their sound as "high speed distorto pop", promise a high-energy punk show full of good times and extremely catchy breakneck tunes.
But rhythm guitarist 'Superstar' Benny Mayhem sees nothing strange about the combination.
"We absolutely love playing these unconventional venues. Although we dig the pubs and clubs, zxspecky really shine in an intimate environment. It's so much more relaxed for everybody involved. We've always been about good times and great music. And, preferably, heaps of beer!"
Also starring local lads The FAIM Project, Blazin' Entrails, and newcomers Blame Game; Lost In The Suburbz: Issue 5 Launch tickets are $10 on the door (ID required), and there will be plenty of CDs and 'Lost In The Suburbz' magazines for sale.

Monday may 17
Perth Jazz Society
OZ BIG BAND
Monday 17 May 2010 @ 8:00pm
Admission Members $10 Student members $5 Non-members $15
THIS will be the premiere performance of the Oz Big Band at the Perth Jazz Society; it has been a long time coming but will be well worth it. What could be better than the irresistible sounds of a standard 17 piece big band ensemble playing music from that classic era of the 1930s and 1940s from the likes of, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and many more.
The Oz Big Band is comprised of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and a four piece rhythm section and if that’s not enough, there is the extra bonus of three male and three female vocalists (so that makes 20 all up) to create an everlasting swinging experience.
If you are into the big band era you will be in heaven. Get down to the Charles, preferably with a few friends to enjoy this special occasion.

Holly Miranda (USA)
she's in Australia as Lou Reed invited her..
I just want to get tickets for this now!
Tuesday, June 8, Holly Miranda (USA) plays Manhattans. Yesss! Popfrenzy is proud to announce the very first visit of American singer-songwriter and musician Holly Miranda. Invited by influential American rocker Lou Reed and critically acclaimed artist and musician Laurie Anderson to join the likes of Boris, Bardo Pond, My Brightest Diamond and King Khan for this years Vivid LIVE Festival - Miranda will also be performing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
You might have heard about Holly Miranda from a different source, like fan Kanye West. The hip-hop star pimped one of her tracks on his website over a year ago, and it wasn't long before hipster music blogs and even Vanity Fair joined in the
bandgwagon. Her solo album “The Magician’s Private Library” (XL Recordings) was released early this year to rave reviews and led to support slots with The XX, Friendly Fires and The Antlers. Miranda grew up singing in church, learning piano at age 6 and picking up the guitar at 14, around the time she began writing songs. After moving New York, she met the people she'd eventually refer to as bandmates for The Jealous Girlfriends, a reputable indie band that is currently on a break, Miranda said, but all continuing on their own musical pursuits.
Supporting on this night are Felicity Groom and the Black Black Smoke plus Rabbit Island. Tickets for this show are available thru www.moshtix.com.au $25+bf OR $30 on door from 8pm.

Sunday Record Hop
Defectors Bar - upstairs at the Flying Scotsman-Sunday, May 23.
Yes folks - the Sunday Record Hop is back! Old Razor Jack has been trawling vinyl emporiums, basements and car boots in Japan, the UK and France, to bring you rockin' connoisseurs the real killers!
As always, we'll be pushing the speakers out onto the balcony and bustin' out the wildest selection of vintage sounds, including primitive rockabilly, wailing harmonica blues, jumpin' R&B, crazed black rockers - and a LOT more! Of course, you can also expect a few crackles, kids - I'll be playing most of these things off original vinyl 45s for the knockout sound nature intended - except no substitutes!
To welcome the Hop back with a dose of sizzling glamour, the lovely Vivian Marlowe will also be unveiling her burlesque talents - in a performance that's sure to steam up the windows! (maybe you should be sitting inside for this!) Doors open at 4pm and if you get there early you'll grab the best seats - and hear some exclusive killers, before the rabble arrives! We finish at 7.30pm, when the Back to Mono crew take over the decks, to carry on the party.
