Live reviews with Lyndon Blue

PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY @ THE ROSEMOUNT HOTEL, SATURDAY APRIL 24

Loading...

Sometimes you enter a gig knowing almost exactly what you’re going to think when you depart. There are concerts when you can nigh on guess the content of the post-show repartée before a note is even played, so well acquainted are you with an act’s style and live performance reputation. And then there are those other times when you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into, like a raccoon who’s agreed to play a game of Scrabble. Saturday night sat in the Raccoony-Scrabulous category: I’d absorbed enough of the hype in my periphery to know Philadelphia Grand Jury were two (or three) guys who played rock music, I knew they had beards. This was about the extent of my preconception. The rest was a mystery waiting to unfurl before my very ears. Would the ‘Philly Jays’ deliver the goods? The answer lay within the hallowed walls of the Rosemount Hotel.

steady eye with tahlia palmer

yes I know the phone is ringing

The modern human being is nearly constantly connected to the rest of the world. Via telephones or the internet, we are always in reach. It’s nice, because friends are good, connection is nice, and having all the world’s information at your fingertips is (/should be something of) a vaguely exhilarating experience. However, sometimes it is preferable to be completely off radar. For some people, they couldn’t possibly comprehend this, but for others, it is necessary for their sanity. So those who like to stay mysterious will, on occasion, manipulate those qualities in technology that makes it a little bit unreliable as a communication tool. I do it, you do it, your friends do it, your boss does it, so let’s all have a little think about it.

Acts of Undressing

Perth-based independent theatre makers The Duck House are excited to present their latest creation, Acts of Undressing, a hilarious tale of three un-fascinating women in fascinators, from April 20 to May 1 at Yirra Yaakin Theatre.

In this dark, disturbing and bloody comedy three loveless milliners [hat makers] escape their boredom by creating aimless, fashionable, empty accessories. Written by Ian Sinclair, whose previous work includes The Bearskinner (2009, The Blue Room Theatre), Acts of Undressing features live music written and performed live on-stage by talented jazz musician Marc Osborne. The stellar cast include respected Perth-based performer Brendan Ewing (Red Shoes, Antigone) alongside Fran Middleton (The Bearskinner), Gita Bezard (The Bearskinner) and Alissa Calessens (The Bearskinner). Directed by Kathryn Osborne (The Bearskinner, The Swallow-Tailed Coat, Oscar).

Female Transport at Old Mill Theatre

Use H3 tag to make a subheading

THE Old Mill Theatre is taking a trip back to 1807 at the end of April with a play set aboard a convict ship on its way to Australia.

Female Transport, directed by Hywel Williams, follows the story of six women convicts on their six-month journey aboard the Sydney Cove and their determination to survive the conditions below the decks.
Actor Phil Barnett, playing Sarge in the play, said that while Female Transport is classified as a drama there are plenty of lighter moments and earthy humour as the six women try to get the better of their captors.

Written by Steve Gooch in 1973, Hwyel Williams has taken on the job of directing Female Transport for the Old Mill Theatre, five years after he originally directed it for Phoenix Theatre.

Playwright Gooch is an experienced dramatist Steve and author of more than 40 scripts. His career as a writer and teacher includes stage plays, adaptations, radio and screenplays, as well as the popular series The Cut Shakespeare.
Joining Barnett in the cast are Kirstie Francis, Kyla Jones, Melissa Kiiveri, Jocelyn O’Neil, Kate O’Sullivan, Ariel Simone, Damien Nott, Adam Dear and Tim Prosser.

Female Transport plays at 8pm, April 23, 24, 28, 29, May 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 with a 2pm matinee on May 2. Tickets are $20, $15 concession – book on 9367 8719.
