Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer
Whiskey is the world’s favourite brown liquor. I don’t drink it very often, but I can see the appeal… it hits you hard, straight in the belly and burns the throat, and is good at intoxicating. My editor told me he was under the impression that the first whiskey was invented to help monks digest rancid meat. So I did a little digging (and one little taste test, no eating rancid meat though) to find out if this was the case.
Both the Scottish and Irish claim to have invented the first whisky. Some experts on the topic say it could have been the Welsh, although these experts also happen to be Welsh in origin. The name “Whisky” was coined by an English king, as a bastardised form of “uisce beatha”, which, translated from Irish Gaelic, means “water of life”, the same as “aquavitae”, which is the term the Greeks used to describe their liquors. Funny how these things work out. Everyone loves booze.
Distillation was first brought to Europe between 1100 and 1300, but who actually brought it over is a topic of debate. The process was first invented by the Babylonians, and was slowly refined and spread through various civilisations. It was used for the making of perfumes and pure alcohol, which was originally used for medicinal purposes, much like we use it today. But I suppose somewhere along the line, someone got some in their mouths, swallowed it, and realised they were WAY drunker WAY faster than when they drank their measly beer. The word spread fast, and it was indeed monks who taught the process to each nation they visited all those years ago. Spread the love of God, spread the process of making a stronger booze… So much escapism!
However, Northern Europe was not climatically equipped to grow the grapes needed for wine distillation, as was being taught to them, so they used barley instead, and thus, Whiskey was born. So while it is safe to assume that Irish monks probably did eat the occasional gross piece of meat, and that it was difficult to digest, the evidence suggests that this was not the true reason whisky was created.
That being said, whisky is well recognised as having medicinal properties, especially as far as the digestive tract is concerned. It has been used to treat ailments such as indigestion, flatulence and stomach cramps, and even has loads of anti-oxidants. One can definitely draw the conclusion that the monks who invented whisky would have quickly discovered these helpful properties, and used them to their favour, ie: drinking a little after each meal to aid digestion. Perhaps that is where the tradition of a “nightcap” came from? In my mind, I head an English accent saying that phrase. And the English went mad for whisky when they had their first little sipple. I like the thought of that happening.
So there you go. Whisky’s pretty awesome. In the words of this guy:
"It sloeth age, it strengtheneth youth, it helpeth digestion,
it cutteth fleume, it abandoneth melancholy, it relisheth the hart, it lighteneth the mind, it quickeneth the spirites...
...truly it is a souveraigne liquor, if it be orderly taken."
(Raphael Holinshed, "History of Ireland", 1577)

Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
'ONE TRICK PONY' @ THE MOON, SUNDAY DECEMBER 6
The day had already yielded as many delights as could justly be expected of it. Helter Skelter, Golden Staph, Grim Fandango, a brand new incarnation of Sex Panther and a gingerbread house at number 208 had ferried us across the warm languor of this Sunday afternoon. Now I found myself comfortably parked on a mission-brown settee, half-lit, flanked by mismatched vintage décor, carafes and toothsome nosh. Knives, forks, glasses clinked and cordial ping-pong banter ricocheted about the restaurant’s cozy posterior. Little did the Moon’s wining and dining patrons know what they were in for; indeed, who could have forseen the evening that was to ensue?
The night began – as so many great things, like hang-gliders, trigonometry, and catering sandwiches, do – with Triangles. In one corner is David Egan (of Carbuncle, Closer Encounter) – in the adjacent, Amber Fresh (Rabbit Island), and at its apex, a misty kaleidoscope moving in slow motion. Permeating the Triangles soundscape are the respective hallmarks of both artists – Egan’s chasm-echo vocal drones and penchant for rhythmic loops and spiraling melodies; Fresh’s minimalist bent, idiosyncratic voice and winsome arrangements; but the totality is dreamier than the sum of its parts, as if the whole lot were emanating from a conch shell. Perhaps it was the nocturnal warmth, the sherry, the doughy lunar enclave, but amidst the drifting triangular ambience I was lulled into a sweet reverie. I gazed deeply into my trio of dips. It took a trio of tacos to
snap me out of it.
As if by magic the nearest obstructing tables and chairs disappear into the wings. The subsequent space is rapidly filled with bodies. Bodies abuzz with hot blood pumping, burning fiercely like jalapeños! Vocalist Andrew Murray faces his disciples like a t-shirted pope with dubious posture. Taco Leg have the decency to publicly apologize in advance to moonly meal-munchers – “sorry… sorry we’re so loud” – quickly followed by the delicious public indecency of covering side A of Black Flag’s 1981 Damaged album and inciting a restaurant riot. Before long human forms collide in a tangled orgy of destruction; we’re kids on a bent and rusted tricycle hurtling down a mountainside with a landslide behind us and a thorn bush up ahead. “I got a six pack, and nothing to do” – Murray wanders casually through the
café’s steaming circle pit, yelling a certain percentage of Black Flag’s lyrics in a monotone, and inventing plenty of his own – by now sweat is spraying like an oscillating sprinkler and it seems I’ve been bled on (badass!) “We’ve got, nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews!” Limbs continue to fly like whips in all directions. Those who have seen Taco Leg perform will be able to envision the havoc. As ever – messier than Montezuma’s revenge, songs were forgotten and lyrics read off scraps of paper. “Fuck you! We’re punk rock… and that makes everything ok.” The tongue’s embedded in the cheek, but it’s sort of true: Taco Leg are definitely not about playing in time or singing in tune. They’re about good old fashioned chaos. A meteor had hit The Moon and left
one motherfucker of a crater. Bruised and damp with numerous types of bodily fluid, the throng were left hungry for more spicy little Taco Legs, even if they couldn’t quite say why: “Gimmie gimmie gimmie… I need some more! Gimmie gimmie gimmie… don’t ask what for!” It had been one hell of a Sundae, and if Triangles were the cherry on top – Taco Leg were fucking nuts.
