Live Reviews with Lyndon Blue
PROJECT MAYHEM ALBUM LAUNCH CARNIVALÉ @ AMPLIFIER BAR, SATURDAY NOVEMBER 7
In 1687, Sir Eyesack Neutron (who, despite living before Google and being walloped on the head with fruit, was still smarter than you) invented the very popular rule that ‘for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.’ In other words, when Britney Spears unleashed her cash-oozing, greasy PVC Circus on Perth, it was inevitable that the town’s plucky punk populace would rise to the occasion with a circus spectacle of their own.
Following top-hatted, dark-cloaked ringmaster Laith Tyranny through the alleyway tent-flaps and into its dimly lit carnival maze, I first passed a freak show under a sign reading THE FAIM PROJECT. Unable to look away, I gazed in awe; a mysterious moniker presaged a yet more puzzling act, thoroughly hard to place. Their winding artful arrangements, mosaics of heavy punk and pop shards, were too cebebral, and their towering mohawks and neo-victorian garb too finely primped, to recall ‘punk’ in terms of nonchalant, snotty, 3-chord rampage. And yet, their resolute hook-hammering, sweaty aura and commitment to frenetic, madcap performance continually brought that word to mind. The sound is probably best encapsulated by one of the band’s own self-descriptions, “Adolescents Vs. Andrew Lloyd Webber” – a punkful broadway musical crowned by the theatrics of
fetching frontman Noah Scape, who flings himself about the stage like he was injected with the blood of Adam Ant and launched from a candy-cane cannon.
Ringmaster Tyranny soon announced the awe-inspiring bird-of-prey display, the ravenous flesh-feaster, the BLACK BUZZARD. These vultures didn’t circle for long before descending remorselessly on a pile of raw, festering RIFFS. I try to avoid the term ‘rock’ because since its inception it has grown into such a vast web of heterogeneous offshoots as to render the word meaningless. But hell, Black Buzzard, from the tattoos to the Lemmy handlebars to the thundering blues hurtle, are just pure fucking ROCK - with zero fancy garnish – which often equates to boredom, but here it’s riotous fun.
Riotious fun too was the ensuing inter-band entertainment – with ‘The Badpiper’ Cam McCazie bewildering the courtyard with his flame-thrower bagpipes (that’s not figurative, they blasted jets of fucking fire) and Matty Blade’s devilish legerdemain and sword swallowing. No less impressive were THE FLOORS, that trio of circus strongmen, who are simply incapable of delivering a half-arsed set; despite having already played at the Northbridge Festival that evening, they exuded a herculean swagger and clobbered you in the snout with their extreme blues assault, rougher than sandpaper, tighter than lycra, fiercer and louder than a league of livid lions.
Spearheading the Unspearsy Circus of course were PROJECT MAYHEM, on account of their having finished off a brand spanking new long-player, and the Ringmaster introduced them with a booming roar. Tumbling through the Ramonesy flaming hoop of ‘Boom Town Rocks’ the impact was immediate, the hooks urgent and irresistible. In a sense Project Mayhem are torn between a back-to-basics crusty DIY aesthetic and classic rock-star extravagance, though they walk this trapeze very well; importantly by never taking either too seriously, but remaining wholly earnest in the totality. The rowdy, buoyant pop tunes are underpinned by plenty of politics too, and it’s strangely refreshing to hear a band actually give a shit, as in ‘Filter This’ - a vitriolic rage against projected internet censorship. Beaming frontman Benny Mayhem’s shirt was inevitably discarded, and a
cameo by The Typhoons’ Brian Kruger on ferocious fiddle sealed the spectacle, before another few bolts of lightning-blast riffery from the Mayhem gang cued the Carnivalé’s finale. It’s safe to say that if this set didn’t get a toe tapping at the very least, you’re quite certainly dead; and even then it’s no excuse, for I’m sure I heard Sir Neutron himself bellowing along to the chorus of ‘Ronald Andrew Taylor’… “Toniiiiiiiiiite! Alriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite!”

Cease launch!!
Hyde Park Hotel
Friday November 20
Cease have been regularly jamming their unique brand of improvised stoner drone around Perth for the past 5 years.
They were recently involved in a collaboration with filmmaker Ben Stewart which documented their explorations into the possibilities of disused public spaces and investigated the boundaries of free performance in Perth.
Earlier this year they recorded 40 minutes of hypnotising, heavy-kraut drone with the help of up-and-coming sound engineer Jay Brandner. Months have been spent meticulously mixing and remixing the album to create a structured composition of hauntingly dark, intense jams, with a calculated sound most fans will be unfamiliar with from the more commonly free and improvised cease performances. The visual artwork was a collaboration between Andrew Britton and David Egan.
The album will be launched on Friday, November 20 at the Hydey, with support from Gutter Guitar (Pex), Atolah and Giant Tortoise.
Doors open at 8pm. Entry is $15 and includes the $15 CD.
Badminton Bandit is excited to present cicada, the first full length album by cease.
