Steady Eye

...the careful insights of one Tahlia Palmer.

Melbourne has a population of Grey-headed flying foxes that I haven’t seen yet. Apparently they only live 3.2 kilometers in a north east direction from my house. You’d think I’d have seen them by now.

They used to live in the Royal Botanic Gardens, but the 20,000 strong family kind of messed the place up a bit. Destroying plants that were planted a long time ago by some noteable person or something, you know how it goes. So instead of killing a chunk of the group, which was the government’s first idea, (I know, wtf?) they moved them out to the suburbs.

I’ve been reading into it, trying to figure out how they did it, but I still have no idea. Something to do with cages? But surely that wouldn’t work; they’d just fly back wouldn’t they? Secret government/environmentalist magic I suppose
The bats aren’t exactly native to Melbourne. They decided to call the city home in the early 80’s. They have always been seasonal visitors, but one year a bunch got left behind during winter, they found a reliable food source, and within 20 years, BANG, big ol’ ‘splosion of little winged rats that loved their new city as much as the humans who move here from all over the country.

Once winter is over and the bats come out of their torpor (new word to add to the vocabulary; torpor is a short-term state of decreased physiological activity. Wow!), I hope I’ll see many of them. The view from the smoking-window in my apartment is very pretty as it is; if groups of bats started to fly across the sunset… I think I might lose my shit.

I’ll be taking notes and doing more research to help me decide if it is worth smuggling a few of them into Western Australia.

Interesting factoid in relation to Grey-headed flying foxes: as their population in Melbourne increased, so did Melbourne’s culture of awesome, at approximately the same rate…The Birthday Party disbanded around the time flying foxes settled in Victoria. Which led to the formation of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Which helped Nick kick the junk habit…everything has been coming up Nick once the bats came to town. Something to keep in mind.

Lyndon Blue live reviews..

BOWLS CLUB BONANZA @ NORTH PERTH LAWN BOWLS CLUB, SUNDAY AUGUST 9

The regulars shot bemused glances over their pint glasses at the swelling clumps of raggedy youths. Yes, the Sunday sun trickled warm through silvery clouds, the leaves danced sleepily on their boughs and the bowls rolled smooth on the manicured green; but these delinquents, with their tattoos and their guitars and their silly haircuts - they were sure to sabotage the serenity any minute now.
And yes, it happened when a band called Taco Leg severed the smoldering silence as a bread knife might a fresh scone.

Taco Leg trade in unashamedly inelegant garage guano. Bare danelectro twangs trundle crudely over punky beats of stilted staccatos; then, piled atop this raw mound, are mostly tuneless recitations. Some of these are subtly witty; others plainly ridiculous (‘We are Taco Leg/We are Taco Leg/We are playing in a band’) – in all cases, there’s an air of self-deprecation and a sense of awkwardness akin to a year eight date. There are those who will maintain that they could feed their dog burritos and a recording of its consequent flatulence would exceed the listening pleasure they’d obtain from Taco Leg – I can’t write anything that will sway the view of suchfolk. But to assess this band on traditional criteria – technique, tightness, poise – is like judging the quality of ice cream on how well it fuels your car. It’s just not the target; while most are bowling for the jack, the ‘Leg’s balls are biased another way entirely.

The many luminous reflections of the mirrorball soon orbited over Shock! Horror! who purveyed a sort of distillation of everything recently trendois – from bleak, minimalist post-punk, to quasi-tribal percussive psychedelia, and glitchy, synth-centric, hollering new wave. None of these things are bad, and neither are Shock! Horror!, but through cynical goggles they could be seen to transmutate into the mighty hipfrog, hopping about in the infinite sonic lake from one lillypad of cool to another. Their tongues, too, seemed not quite dexterous enough to snag complete control over their ideas: micro-korgs and effects aplenty are grand if successfully employed, but the set was fraught with technical uncertainty. It’s a shame – this bunch are very close to being great – they simply require the time, courage and vision to forge something that is truly distinctive and less of an amphibious amalgamation.

From Mexican limbs, frogponds and a sizzling barbeque we fly to Bermuda, which I feel is a great name for a band. A promising start – a sort of carnivale instrumental leading into some vivacious punk merriment - but alas! Unlike the Bermuda triangle, they didn’t drive the compass wild – they pointed north and continued on course throughout, eventually losing interest despite remaining formidably tight and buoyant. A pleasant – but largely forgettable – rock and roll ear-meal.

Finally it was time to party on the transcendental plane with Astral Travel, who occupy an almost impossibly perfect juncture between unpretentious accessibility and original, inventive songcraft. Within their silken indie rock tapestry, the vital thread is the spellbinding voice of singer Amber Gempton; eschewing the ubiquitous female vogue of singing in hushed, childish tones through pursed lips, she instead throws her mouth open wide to unleash a powerful yet delicate folky vocal that you want to put in a box to hear all day and night. Gempton is the best singer in Perth. Period. If you live in this city, and you’re a fan of Vivian Girls, and you haven’t seen Astral Travel, you may as well have been stabbing yourself in the eye with a red hot fucking fork because they are similar, but way better. The mantric whirling mirrorball reflected a million times our expressions of enraptured glee, and the regulars shot bemused glances over their pint glasses at our glimmering ghostly spirits as they rose up, up, far above the green and out into the star-strung skies! Darn kids!

Saturday August 15

Perth expats Jack on Fire return to their coastal frontier roots to preach the Good Word of old time rock n roll and murky alt country.

Matured under a miserable Melbourne sky since fleeing their distant western outpost in 2008, the forsaken sandgropers and their newly initiated east coast apostles yield a debut album Stranger Cain with guns out blazing and the devil nearby.

Headed by the anguished murmur of lost soul and hardworking man Ben Blakeney, the Jack on Fire chain gang includes WA compatriots Samantha Wass, Dave Thirkettle-Watts and George Hyde sharing all manner of vocal and hollow-bodied tasks, along with Ross Goodale on drums. Sealing their fate and consummating their conversion to the other side is Melbournian addition Kelly Lane on violin

Australia Does Not Exist

The Kurb Gallery
Saturday August 15 till Friday August 21

Australia Does Not Exist Art Exhibition

Featuring James Mellon, Adam Janali, Diokno Pasilan and Katie West

What shapes and constructs identity?

Is there an elusive quality, a ‘national identity’, which binds us all as Australians?

Do national identities ever have anything to do with cultural experience or are they more to do with a constructed image of a ‘nation’?

Australia does not exist is an exhibition featuring Perth based artists James Mellon, Adam Janali, Diokno Pasilan and Katie West. The diverse range of mediums employed – photography, oil painting, drawing and print, mirrors the cultural diversity of the artists - an Afghan refugee, an Irish migrant, a Filipino migrant and an Indigenous Australian.

The work of these artists reflects a contemporary Australian context whilst challenging the dominant perception of Australian ‘national identity’.

The opening night of Australia Does Not Exist, commencing 6pm Saturday August 15th, will feature performances from Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig, Mar Bucknell, Paul Harrison, MiteyKo, and The Kurbist Gong Band.

NB: If the art isn't enough to entice you, there will be free food and drink. Also please invite all of your facebook 'friends'.
