BAD HOUSES (DEBUT GIG) & FRIENDS @ THE SWAN LOUNGE, THURSDAY JUNE 3

The shopfront is derelict, mildewed; beneath its outer incrustation of dust and rotted, blistering posters you can still just make out the sign that divulges the establishment’s name. NOISE ‘R’ US, it reads. What a curious vocation, you muse, staring into one of the windows, spider-webbed with crystalline cracks: the vendorship of cacophony. It’s too peculiar an emporium to resist. You nudge the crooked door, tentatively at first, then with more vigour: it swings open dramatically with the sound of a dissonant steel string triad screeched through a tube screamer. Suddenly you gaze upon a labyrinth impossibly large given the store’s humble façade. You are in the noise maze. You pivot on your boot-axis to find that the rickety front door has vanished. You’re lost in a tangle of tumult, a den of din – it’s all on sale – and the only exit is through the checkout!

Media Stunt Gone TERRIFYINGLY Wrong?

I have recently discovered that there are people in the world who have devoted their lives to studying the future, or more specifically, understanding all the possible scenarios for the future, and then shaping the present to reach an ideal state. Futurology. It’s a fairly straight forward way of ensuring that human beings work together to try and create a sustainable future for ourselves.

Rad concept right? I was intrigued. And a bit drunk. So off to the internet I went, searching for more information, and maybe some clues as to why, given its supposed simplicity and radness, I had never heard of this before. It didn’t take too long to figure it out; the study of “postulating possible, probable, and preferable futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them” generally brings up big

Perfect Strike for WA Comedy

Samual Beckett’s Waiting for Godot is considered one of the classic works of modern theatre, and perhaps the pinnacle of The Absurd on the stage. For those unfamiliar with the piece the plot is simple; two old companions spend their time talking on life’s matters as they wait for an indescribable character called Godot.

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)

Challenge Stadium

The reclusive Yusuf Islam, who now simply goes by the name Yusuf, last toured Australia in 1974.

The legendary singer/songwriter will perform in Perth at Challenge Stadium on June 10.

As Cat Stevens, he sold millions of records in the early 1970s, fuelled by such classics as Peace Train, (Remember the Days of the) Old School Yard, Where Do the Children Play?, Father & Son, First Cut is the Deepest, Wild World, Moonshadow and Morning Has Broken.

After converting to Islam, Yusuf gave up music at the end of the '70s. He reappeared at a benefit concert in Sarajevo in 1997, and has since slowly become more active, recording a children's album, performing at Nelson Mandela's 46664 concert in 2003, and then releasing a song to raise funds after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

TRIBUTE TO LENA HORNE

Mon 14 Jun 2010 @ 8:00pm

Admission Members $12, Student members $10, Non-members $18

When Lena Horne died on 10th May this year at the age of ninety-two it was only appropriate to feel a sense of loss for an old friend. A beautiful and refined black woman who not only broke the barriers of racism in her country but re-generated her musical career at the age of 65 when she returned to Broadway with her show – The Lady and Her Music it had a 333 performance Broadway run and won her a special Tony Award and two Grammy Awards for the cast recording of her show.

By the late fifties, Horne was disenchanted with Hollywood and increasingly focused on her nightclub career i.e. Cocoanut Grove in LA, Waldorf-Astoria in New York, and in Europe. She became the premiere performer with her amazing voice and her elegant and entrancing southern accent, tantalizing both audience and those musicians who worked with her.

Lena Horne retired in 1998 after releasing another studio album entitled, ‘Being Myself’ but did return to the recording studio in 2000 when asked by the great conductor, Simon Rattle, to contribute some vocal tracks on his Classic Ellington Album.

The evening will feature: Ali Bodycoat, Bronwynn Sprogowski, Helen Matthews, Libby Hammer, Shameem Taheri Lee – Russell Holmes (piano), Pax Andrews (reeds), Karl Florrison (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums).

The Myth of Julian Rose - “The haunting begins June 9…”

The Blue Room Theatre

Mondo Di Corpo and The Blue Room presents the world premiere of new Western Australian work The Myth Of Julian Rose at The Blue Room Studio from 8 – 26 June 2010 as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s 21st birthday season.

Marisa Garreffa returns to the Blue Room to direct Daniel Kershaw’s debut work following the success of multiple award-winning Motortown in 2008 (Equity Nomination - Best Director 2008, Blue Room Awards - Best Production 2008).

Julian, is a man with a disturbing past that surfaces with a vengeance when a Minotaur begins to stalk his family. The Myth Of Julian Rose boldly portraits the effect of maternal child abuse and the fallout of suppressed trauma. Giving voice to the unspeakable, the resulting story is emotive, tragic and chilling.

“The play addresses the fallout of suppressed memory and challenges the notion of confession as a means of healing. If memories are not confronted, they will find a voice elsewhere, in this case, a ten-foot tall Minotaur” – Marisa Garreffa

Starring James Helm, Glenn Hall, Jo Morris and Sarah Nelson with live music and sounds by Tristen Parr, expect a (un)healthy dose of magic realism and contemporary performance infused with circus art in this powerful collision of genre.

Produced by Christina Yiannakis l Visual World created by Karen Cook, Ami McDonald, Bobbi Jo Divitini, Rosie Martin and Colleen Sutherland l Artwork by Deon Schafer

The Blue Room Theatre
