Lyndon Blue live reviews..

HANDSOME FURS @ AMPLIFIER, SUNDAY AUGUST 30

Sunday nights in the city of Perth are apt to be as lively as a cemetery for deceased tumbleweeds, but floating about the air of the Amplifier bar this Sabbath eve is a sense of anticipation so palpable, you can nearly reach out, grab it, poke a hole in the top and wear it as a poncho. Eager human dominoes topple each other through the door and into the paddling pool of bodies and beer and kindling moonlight; and they do it in the righteous name of drum machines and guitars and sweat and lights and all those good things, the gifts of a seductive, nomadic, two-part Montreal Magi who are rumoured to be passing through.

Tea bags. Majority of television programs. Bunbury. Carlton Draught. That Bond movie with George Lazenby in it. What do all of the these things have in common with Perth band Young Revelry? If you answered “staggering mediocrity,” you are correct, however there is a vital difference, too, and that is that none of those other things – to the best of my knowledge – have scored support slots for notable national and international acts lately.
Young Revelry’s set begins with an auspicious swamp-stomp pile of fuzz-mud riffing – but before they’ve gone anywhere, they’ve stagnated, brewing in their own desire to sound like Sonic Youth. Exactly how or why this band is opening for Handsome Furs is mysterious. Young Revelry dangle nuggets of pleasantly thick, noisey alternative rock teasingly over you before casting them into a vast lackluster lake, ultimately merely sounding a bit like that band they play lots on Triple J, which sounds a lot like that other band they play on Triple J…and also that other one.

No such accusations of nugget-squandering can be thrown at Handsome Furs; they are a band who know that when you strike gold, you might as well keep digging. My first real-life experience with Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade frontman and one handsome half of the ‘Furs) is almost knocking he and his guitar down the stairs as he emerges from Amplifiers’ subterranean greenroom; my second is an improvement on the first, bearing witness as he dons said guitar and joins wife Alexei Perry (the arguably Handsomer Fur) on tonight’s sonic adventure. Perry helms the duo’s relentless, brutal drum machine, and the first thing that hits you is a meteoric four-on-the-floor, so huge you feel your nostrils vibrate fiercely. Beyond this you detect the distant distorted jangle of Boeckner thrumming and pummeling as if, whilst conversing with a boisterous giant robot, you’ve noticed a garage punk band playing nearby. The pair are a contagious jubilant explosion – Boeckner, sweating and thrashing and dangling his microphone around his neck; Perry stomping and bouncing and contorting gymnastically as if possessed by a disco demon – and following each of the earnestly crooned songs (an intense assortment from 2007’s Plague Park and this year’s Face Control albums), they laugh and exclaim as if in awe of the amount of fun they’re having.
Both take to the synth and the pace is slowed a touch for ‘Handsome Furs Hate This City’ – though Boeckner would soon assure us in his best Australian accent that Perth is ‘fully sick’ – before the return of the kick beat with such ferocity that my clothes are blown clean off and vaporize into a glittering puce smokescreen. Handsome Furs’ music isn’t dumb, but it definitely speaks to your instinctual inner; fittingly named, they’re wild yet refined, like a coyote in a dinner suit. On an otherwise sleepy Sunday night, Handsome Furs provide a good reminder we’re alive – and though when this encore finishes this Gypsy-like Canadian couple will vanish like steam, as quickly as they appeared, the grin they’ve left on the crowd’s collective face is one that I suspect shall linger for a while.

Simone and Girlfunkle

The glorious harmony vocal wonder that are Simone and Girlfunkle have been recording and are making material that can easily be described as gorgeous and ornate towers of tunesmithery.. or even.. gushing rivulets of song! The next chance you have to enjoy Simone and Girlfunkle is on September 27 at the Newport with Russian Winters and Boys Boys Boys.  Their myspace

Steady Eye

with Tahlia Palmer

In the 6 months that I’ve been living in Melbourne, Sugar Army has toured the country twice. The first show was right after I moved here, so I went along to say hi, eager to see some familiar faces. I stood around watching people for much of the night, as you do when you’re shy and sober. There were a bunch of blonde girls up the front singing along, and a bunch of dudes standing around tapping their toes, a few rocking their upper bodies… High energy, tight set, large crowd, blah blah blah. Sugar Army do their thing, and they certainly do it very well.

After a few months recording and doing life stuff in Perth, they back came to Melbourne last week to promote their new album, and to satiate their new fans. I was selling merch at the gig, so I had an even better view of the crowd, and a better reason to watch them. What a change, mark my words. The boys were younger, had longer, shaggier hair; the girls were more brunette than blonde, wore more lipstick, applied more dark eye makeup, had nicer shoes… and the people pressed to the front of the stage were more than 6 people thick. Excitable fans punching fists and shouting and all that. The venue was very close to full by the time the Sugars came onstage. There was even a sizeable, albeit subdued, crowd who came early to watch the two support acts.

The kids to whom I sold t-shirts were eager to hand over the cash, with a few stuffing their newly purchased goods into their satchel bags right after the doors opened. It would seem that Sugar Army are beginning to truly make a mark on the young, vaguely hip target market. And after the album apparently received rave reviews- and a flogging- on Triple J, I am not at all surprised. The “Tongues In Cheeks” film clip was Channel V’s Ripe Clip of the Week last week, which, I am told, means the video gets played 50 times a day, with people txting in being all “OMG I LUV THS CLIP THE DRUMMER IS SO HAWT LOL” or something to that effect. I don’t know for sure, I’ve never watched Channel V. But it’s a great film clip, made by some very talented people, so I am glad. And a bit proud.

According to one hardcore fan from China on facebook, they even have hardcore fans in China. Huzzah!

So kudos to the Sugar Army boys and their hardworking management, it’s finally beginning to come together. I predict that the next release will probably bring even wider national recognition, especially if more awesome film clips are made. Young people are suckers for visual media. I guess the next logical step is some well orchestrated, small time international touring. England? Canada? China? But that shit is expensive, maybe it’s best to save the gamble for another 6-12 months…

Either way, if the last show was anything to go by, I definitely liking having Sugar Army this side of the country. Those boys (and their sassy manager) are fun to drink with fo’ sho. I hope that they blow up soon. They do deserve it. But, it is a selfish wish too, because then I wouldn’t have to pay for the after-party carton of Melbourne Bitter.
God speed!

The End of Everything / Streetworks

Spectrum Project Space
Friday, 28 August till Sunday, 6 September

OPENING NIGHT FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST AT 6PM

The End of Everything and Streetworks are two concurrent solo exhibitions of meditative photographic works by Perth artist Kevin Ballantine.

Armed with notes on Renaissance art and old churches, museum floor plans, a digital SLR camera and two "anything-can-happen" plastic cameras, Ballantine headed to Europe in November 2008.

The result is this exhibition of photographs that beautifully capture urban landscapes, art, sculptures, monuments and people encountered whilst wandering through the streets of Rome, Florence, Sienna, Paris and London.

Of this body of work, Ballantine speaks of his intention to "exploit the qualities of the winter light, and the metaphoric resonance of leafless, barren urban landscapes".

Visually the shows will look very different given the two camera formats, united however by a catalogue essay in the form of journal excerpts.

The exhibitions are perhaps the final chapter in a body of work, a narrative, which Ballantine has been working on and exhibiting for over a decade, loosely associated with pilgrimage and sacred places.

Monday 7 September 2009 @ 8:00pm
Admission WAYJO and PJS members $15, Non-members $20
(Members rate applies for both WAYJO and PJS members)
WAYJO THREE BIG BANDS
It’s a super year for sax talent at WAYJO! Here’s a sensational chance to catch all three WAYJO bands and hear the sassy solos of Perth’s newest jazz stars.
WAYJO is one of Australia’s cultural gems, the only youth jazz orchestra of its kind in the country. It provides a unique experience for jazz musicians aged 14 to 25 who are the absolute cream of young jazz players in the state. Competition for places is fierce, with hundreds of young musicians trying out every year. Those who make it are really amongst the best young players in WA and are rewarded with career-defining experiences – touring, training and performing with world-class guest artists.
WAYJO is unique – a hothouse for Australia’s young jazz musicians that is a bridge from aspiring school musician to professional working musician.
Three WAYJO ensembles will perform for PJS.

The Jazz Orchestra
The Jazz Orchestra is WAYJO’s premiere ensemble, playing a variety of big band styles from the swing era to contemporary jazz. The focus is on presenting modern Australian composers including a programme to promote local WA emerging composers.
Featured Australian composers include Graeme Lyall, James Morrison, Julian Lee, Mace Francis, Daryl McKenzie, Grant Windsor, Michael Wallace, Daniel Thorne and Tilman Robinson. International modern jazz composers include Bob Brookmeyer, Ed Partyka and Maria Schneider

Big Band
The WAYJO Big Band presents big band music in the style of the 1950s and 60s brass sounds with a swing feel. Count Basie and Duke Ellington classics are performed along with music from Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Gordon Goodwin and Bob Mintzer.
Swing Band
Swinging its way through early jazz tunes from the swing era, the WAYJO Swing Band takes its repertoire from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Sy Oliver, Fletcher Henderson and Tommy Dorsey. Perfect for dancing, this band of young jazz musicians is the future of jazz in WA.

WAYJO Graduates
WAYJO graduates have taken the music world by storm and pop up in touring rock, pop, jazz and musical stage show bands across the globe. In 2008 musicians from WAYJO played in the Dancing with Stars house band (Jordan Murray trombone), toured in Kylie Minogue’s X2008 show (Graeme Blevins saxophone), toured with James Morrison (Troy Roberts saxophone) and toured with Kate Ceberano (Jamie Oehlers saxophone, also named Head of Jazz at WAAPA this year).

Here’s your or somebody you know(s) opportunity to perform live just call Justin. These nights kick off at 8PM with about four acts each hour till 12. Entry is free..

The Silents headline Mojos Bar.

Tuesday, September 8, is a super sneak peak night of indie acts as presented by Catch Fire Boss. The Silents, Giant Tortise and Horny Pony will all be playing. If you haven’t seen The Silents recently or with their new(ish) drummer Mike, then you simply must. They are more excellent and interesting than ever, in-fact they have pretty much evolved into a new band over recent months. This show will be a rare chance to catch some of their newly penned songs destined for a new album release some months from now…the band will be laying pretty low until then. Giant Tortoise is a new three piece including members from Tame Impala, Pond, The Silents and Mink Mussel Creek… new adventures in riffery and stoner jams with a nod to the 90’s (in a good way). They will tell you they are the best band ever… pretty much. Due to Tame Impala touring commitments (and Giant Tortoise breeding seasons) you would be lucky to catch them again before the end of the year so this will be a good chance. They are super new and super awesome. Horny Pony… is a killer song by Prince… the B-side to Cream in fact. This act is not him but someone else who some of us love just as much… some love her more.. Entry to this show is $5 from 8pm!

Fremantle Blues and Roots Club at Mojos Bar

Wednesday, September 9, the Fremantle Blues and Roots Club is at it again delivering some of the best blues and roots music fremantle has to offer. This week catch 8Ball Aitken with support from Seth Lowe and Bec Moran. Entry is $10 entry $5 for members from 8pm.
