Camera Obscura in Perth

CAMERA OBSCURA & SLOW CLUB @ AMPLIFIER BAR, MONDAY JANUARY 25

Remember that Rice Bubbles ad? A raging river of surging cereal grains; beaming friends afloat in a stream of snap! Crackle! Pop!
Paddling into Amplifier bar’s darkened chamber – or, in the inifinitely cooler latin, its ‘camera obscura’ – it was Rice Bubbles all over again – the snap! of snare drum, the crackle! of guitar-twang wrung from dusty amps and the smooth, wholesome pop! of two exceptionally mellifluous groups hailing from the globe’s northernmore lines of latitude.

Just as everything sounds cooler in Latin, everything sounds brilliant in the kickass Sheffield accent, as purveyed by the charming duo of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor, together known as Slow Club. Theirs is an impossibly endearing brand of pop; decidedly lo-fi in a way so uncontrived that to use the term feels dirty. Like two friends jamming on a paisley couch on your verandah, it’s intimate and earnest, but never amateurish; apart from a barbarously out-of-tune guitar in the opening number, everything about Slow Club’s set was slick and refined. Their delightful northern drawls blend effortlessly into crispy floating harmonies darting playfully and evocatively over simple, sixties-coloured guitar/drum arrangements. After nearly being set ablaze in their perth accommodation, the pair were in impressively impeccable form; between rollicking bash-alongs (‘It Doesn’t Have To Be Beautiful) and glittery, aching ballads sucked through a nineteen-forties timewarp (‘Sorry About The Doom,’ ‘There Is No Good Way To Say I’m Leaving You,’) Slow Club show all the commitment, charisma and creative power of a band with a phenomenal journey ahead.

If there’s an accent to rival Sheffield’s is Camera Obscura’s Glaswegian brogue. Now in their fourteenth year of existence, the band was a well-oiled machine, and summery, floral indie-pop seeps out of their pores; inflected with a chipper Mersey beat and endlessly palatable songs, their music doesn’t leap out at you but rather takes a dainty and fetching position amongst the wallpaper. Similarly to Perth’s own Autumn Isles, Camera Obscura suffer only from perhaps sounding a little too nice – there’s very little to break up the steadily frolicking but restrained tunes, resulting in many tracks melding into one large, nebulous but nevertheless quite tasty pastel blob – like rice bubbles left in milk for just a tad too long. Having well and truly won the bobbing throng over with their cheery tones and between-song pinings for haggis, the quintet were welcomed back for a winning encore; their final number gradually grinding to a halt, met with fierce applause.

Ale flowed and the good vibes hung palpably in the toasty air, now freshened by the cool audio-breezes of British pop splendour – and so passed one of the tastier late-night breakfasts you could hope to scarf down.

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer

Earlier this month, while in Perth, I was fortunate enough to be involved in two very fun, very different musical events: going to Southbound with Tame Impala, and staying with members of Melbourne bands Bone and The Beat Disease for their Perth tour. Many photos were taken, many jokes were made, and a lot of fun was had. I’m a very lucky girl.

I’ve been following the Tame Impala/Mink Mussel Creek/Pond boys around with a camera for a good 4 years now. Anyone who has seen a Pond show lately will know why I’m fascinated by these guys. The first time I saw Mink Mussel Creek, I realised that they had something incredibly special, and decided I need to document them as much as possible. So I did. And now that Tame Impala are touring nationally, they graciously allow my camera and I unrestricted access to their shows in whichever city we are both in at the same time.

When I found out I was going to Southbound, I was very pleased. When I found out there was no camping involved, that we would in fact be staying in a chalet near the beach, I was very, very pleased.

So as with every event I attend like this, I was snapping constantly. One afternoon, everyone was a little bored, so a few people made a fort out of the bean bags supplied in artist’s area backstage. I have some incredible photos of Felicity Groom diving through the air onto said fort. I got a free meal, saw Paul Dempsey, made fun of Paul Dempsey behind his back, and spent most of the time very relaaaaaaaaxed with my psychedelic musician buddies. On the way home, we stopped at a truck stop for some fresh fruit, saw Paul Dempsey again, made more fun of Paul Dempsey, ate our fruit and went back to the city.

A few days later, I was still sleeping in whoever’s bed is not being taken by the owner at Carbuncle Dave’s and Pond Nick’s house. I’m having a lovely time chilling in Middle Earth, until the serene vibe is shattered by two dust covered cars arrive outside, full of stinking, sweaty people who drove for 38 hours from the other side of the country.

“EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!” was the noise I made as I ran out to the car. “MY BONES ARE HERRRRRE”. The Beat Disease was there too, but it’s harder to make a cute joke about their band name. Wife beaters and cut-offs abounding, they pour into Dave and Nick’s backyard, with two cartons of beer waiting for them. Stories were told, so loudly, so passionately, about testicles and pissing in bottles and recreating their EP cover on the edge of a cliff- all very manly, all very rock. I realised that this was exactly the event I needed to help my transition from my uber-relaxed Perth lifestyle, to my perhaps more hectic lifestyle in Melbourne.

The Beat Disease was the first band that Bone fell in love with after their relocation from Perth, both musically and personally. They have a similar attitude towards the music scene (cynical), human beings (cheeky), song writing (dark). While Bone are influenced by Shellac, The Beat Disease are more influenced by The Birthday party, but the differences in style work neatly when they play one after the other. Their shows at Mojos and 208 were full of high energy, sweaty boys throwing themselves into each other, and a blood nose. Which is a very similar experience to when these guys play in Melbourne, with other bands in their cluster of badass: Teenacher, Smurfinger, Dozers and Mr. Blister (all worthy of myspace research).

By the end of that weekend, I was more than ready to get on that fucking plane. It’s good to be back. Then, less than a week later, I receive a text message letting me know I have a door spot waiting for me at Pond’s show in Melbourne. It's all on again!
