Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
Mental Powers CD Review
Mental Powers - Untitled
(Badminton Bandit, 2010)
If there’s one band in Perth who like to tread the road less travelled, it’s Mental Powers. They eschew stages in favour of atypical performance spaces. They hand-draw their gig posters and painstakingly craft their album covers one by one – never caring, mind you, to name the record. And all the while, they create sound which inhabits only the very fringes of what might be called pop or rock music, and which in any case renders the use of such terms redundant. So in truth, it was fitting that, in order to acquire their debut longplayer, I had to brave the apocalypse, grinding along anarchic streets on semi-submerged buses, assailed by black-green skies, hemmed in by flailing whips of lightning and pelted by ice-chunks the size of small mammals. We slithered desperately through sodden five o’clock darkness until, upon reaching my album-bearing destination, the
sun surged out in smoldering orange and pink.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
a kalaidescope of so far
I have been working in bars on and off for 5 years. Let me tell you all about it. My first bar job was at an awful place on James St, Northbridge; it was expensive, tacky, loud and smokey, and attracted either 19 year olds from the rich outer suburbs, or professional salaryman/woman types who enjoyed coke, pills and average DJ sets. The tips were good, but the customer interaction was soul destroying. The hours were pretty brutal too. I got the job there when I was 17. That’s got to be illegal. And at that point in my life, I thought that smoking bongs everyday was more enjoyable, and way cooler, than drinking a glass of wine everyday. After about a year (I think? It’s so hazy…), all the smoking combined with the awful human beings I was serving began to take their toll. I freaked out, stopped turning up to shifts, and went on centrelink.

66a Church Road – A Lament Made of Memories and Kept in Suitcases
Presented by Perth International Arts Festival
One of England's leading stand-ups and finest raconteurs, Daniel Kitson takes us on a journey from love at first sight to anguished separation. Delving into the deeper meaning of home, Daniel explores the emotional value of the little things: cooked breakfasts at his favourite local café, the wonders of the sash window and even the grimy front door.
At one moment funny, the next achingly touching, Daniel Kitson unpacks a universal story of keen observations that proves property value goes far beyond market price.
