Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer
This week’s assignment: figure out if the amount of bars in a city plays any part in fostering a bad ass garage rock scene.
I’ve worked hard, and compiled the stats. So here are my findings, based on information available on the internet (mainly myspace, and the occasional music blog). Keep in mind that GARAGE is the key word in these findings.
Chicago
Population: 2,853,114
Bars: 1800
1 bar for every 1585 people
Notable band/s: Empires
I am not impressed by Chicago. Their version of garage is all pop-rocky. It’s too happy and nice, bit on the rehash side, and kinda lame.
San Francisco’
Population: 808,976
Bars: 649
1 bar for every 1246 people
Notable band/s: Ganglians, Wooden Shjips
Holy balls, I want to go to San Francisco. There’s a a sexy garage/psych cross over scene going on over there, and I kinda want to have babies with all of them. I bought a Wooden Shjips CD. I never buy CDs on the internet. KUDOS SAN FRANNNNN.
Atlanta
Population: 537,958
Bars: 1007
1 bar for every 534 people
Notable band/s: Black Lips, Deerhunter, The Hums
Atlanta’s scene seems pretty raucous. Live shows in this city have a reputation for being energetic and messy, the Black Lips in particular. Man, I cannot wait to see them live.
London
Population: 7,556,900
Bars: 4,492
1 bar for every 1682 people
Notable band/s: None
So London has this genre of its own called UK Garage, which is a type of hip hop/dance music. This confuses things a little, and makes plain ol’ garage bands in London hard to find. Also, it’s difficult to find any decent bands of the original genre because they’re all trying to sound like the Libertines. Fuck that. London fails.
Detroit
Population: 912,062
Bars: 250
1 bar for every 3648 people
Notable band/s: The White Stripes, The Upholsterers
It would seems that Jack White is the only decent musician in Detroit working within the “Garage” theme. According to myspace at least. And who am I to argue with the world’s largest networking service?
Melbourne
Population: approx 4 million
Bars: 926
1 bar for every 4319 people
Notable band/s: Eddie Current Suppression Ring, Rocket Science, The Frowning Clouds
There is some cool stuff going on in Melbourne, but it rarely falls under the “garage” tag. There is an overwhelming amount of fashion involved in the Melbourne music scene, which leads me to believe that perhaps Garage music just ain’t fashionable no more.
Reykjavík
Population: 322,012
Bars: 212
1 bar for every 1518 people
Notable band/s: None
Either myspace is not a good medium for finding garage bands, or Iceland has none that do anything but... practise in their mom’s garage. I was a little disappointed; I figured if anyone was going to have an interesting scene of any kind, it would be Iceland. Again with wrong correlation comment...
New York
Population: 19,490,297
Bars: 30,983
(3674 cigar bars alone)
1 bar for every 629 people
Notable band/s: The Boggs, Golden Triangle, Black Acid
As expected, New York didn’t disappoint. While not nearly as exciting as San Fransisco, this city stills holds up as the place to be musically.
Seattle
Population: 598,541
Bars: 996
1 bar for every 600 people
Notable band/s: Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death, The Drug Purse, Steaming Wolf Penis
Seattle’s garage scene is an eclectic mix of genre cross overs, similar to San Francisco. I’d go there to watch bands. I think someone should give me money to travel through America and write about/take photos of this shit.
Montreal
Population: 1,620,693
Bars: 472
1 bar for every 3,433 people
Notable band/s: Velvet Chrome
Canada seems to enjoy doing the electro/garage thing. And then there’s a bunch of shoegazey, quiet bands who classify themselves as garage too. I didn’t find much I like, but when Canadians do it well, they do it reaaaally well.
Perth
Population 1,650,000
Bars: 570
1 bar for every 2894 people
Notable band/s: Frozen Ocean, The Painkillers
There are a few “garage” bands in Perth, but not many are all that interesting. It alls seems a little forced, but I might be too close to the scene to write about it in any way at all biased.
So at the end of this epic information quest, the findings are generally inclusive. There is a very vague correlation between the amount of drinking spots in a particular city (compared to how many people in the city) and how good their garage scene is: the fewer bars, the better the scene. But, San Francisco and Melbourne blow that fact right out the water. I didn’t have the time necessary to discover how many of these bars are actually good, or how many are live venues, but I’d like to explore this one day in the future. Any want to sponsor me?

Live Reviews with Lyndon Blue
A MIND-MELTING MID-SPRING NIGHT'S DREAM @ HYDE PARK HOTEL, THURSDAY OCTOBER 22
I dreamt I was Ra, ancient egyption god of the sun, and to my left in a seething haze, Set – overlord of the desert, storms, darkness, chaos – and we were steering a sun boat or Solar Barge over the scorched wilderness of a much-soiled pub carpet, over pulsating pyramaids of piled effects pedals, and looking down -to my horror - my helm has transmorphed into a guitar upon which my pharaonic fingers, independent of my baffled cognitive locus, flailed and flit their way into a cloud of loops, feedback, radios and recorders whilst Set massaged a stringsynth or pounded a conga or percussion pad into Egyptian submission. It was a weird dream; thankfully when I awoke in a warm sweat and peered from my cosmic hammock I met the pleasant sight and sound of a lovely looming looper affectionately known as Pex the Astonishing.
Pex’s soothing hands were just what the doctor ordered; near-hypnotic so as to give a healing feeling. Faintly nostalgic - even eerie - surf-infused pop song arrangements with an eastern-European marinade entirely orchestrated with six marvelously twangy strings, a loop station and the odd effect; layers that build up like impossible moss on a perpetually rolling boulder or else that creep up surreptitiously like the warm blanket of tender insobriety following a bottle of Merlot imbibed by glassy moonlight. And speaking of insobriety, this audioglory was accompanied by the memorable spectacle of Pex being dirty-danced by a tambo-groupie/ostensible member of The Velvetines, who were soon to follow.
There are many words you could give to the Velvetines’ pandemonium that ensued, and I’m going to go with “fucking hilarious” for starters: here we had a group of youths sloshed, smashed, plastered, tanked, pissed, polluted, sauced and just generally not doing very well that they struggled to plug in their guitars let alone execute a coherent musical performance. They stumbled and swore their way through the next half hour or so, with public displays of affection, coin slots big enough for godzilla’s pennies, guitars swung like cricket bats - at times, the rhythm section maintained some solid smooth grooves, but generally the effect was that of an ape swallowing your shoegaze collection and shitting it out backwards. It was classic rock and roll: a bunch of inebriated lunatics too far gone to play and much too far gone to care.
Craig McElhinney had the ridiculously tough task of trying to follow one of history’s great natural disasters. Luckily the mild-mannered scot just did his own thing and excelled as per usual; with the lights dimmed and a luminous rope lighting his ironing-board pedal set up, the one-man-one-guitar-onebigfuckoffspeaker operation sailed through a ghostly lagoon of ambient drones, swooping riffs and oozing, throbbing textures. McElhinney extracts sounds from a guitar that most couldn’t even dream of, and every set seems more immense than the last.
Craig’s stange and sultry sailboat soon struck a gargantuan iceberg of distortion and drum kit bombardment; just one floating hunk of the Frozen Ocean. The duo were a gelignite hootenanny, blasting their way across a trillion tempos in a sort of progressive-punk style that one might call ‘mathcore’ but which is more accurately described as ‘holy shit, what just happened?’ There is a near-Japanese urgency and hyperactivity to one side of their sound, while much is doused in blues and hints of trudging sludge metal. I knew I was awake now, for no man could sleep through the sonic onslaught of Frozen Ocean; and yet to quote Billy S., tonight was such stuff as dreams are made on: guitars, gods, big amps, beer, butt cracks, anarchistic tamborine cataclysms and mayhem of the most marvelous breed. If music be the food of love – and one couple during
Pex’s set know exactly what I’m talking about – why not play on.

The Moon Sundays
This Sunday, October 25, Andrew Weir
will perform with his loop pedal at the Moon Cafe from about 8pm. Andrew recently held a performance outside a church, due to which, there were assuring results. Those inflicted with the Jesus psychosis otherwise known as faith in an unknowable god, more commonly referred to as being religious, sometimes labelled as daft, all were attracted to his sounds to discover that there is no glorious know all sentient being, no there is but temporary brilliance on a plain made enternal only through ethically and morally sound choices determined on a basis of intuition and logic. Whence they, the religious, threw off their archaic garb and were forever alleviated from such nonsense
