Lyndon Blue live reviews..
TIM ROGERS @ MOJOS BAR, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19
Our vast and sun-scorched land, for all its exquisite beaches, marsupials, venomous fauna and concentrated yeast extracts, doesn’t have that many rock stars these days. Plenty of rock musicians, yes, great ones too! - but I mean real rock stars – not mere performers, but personalities, legends, icons, the kinds of people you cut out of magazines and stick in a scrapbook. Thank god for Tim Rogers. On Wednesday eve the You Am I frontman reaffirmed – if there was any doubt – his place amongst those select few.
So I drifted into Mojo’s to find, as I never had before, a crackling blaze on the hearth, casting its warm glow across the surrounds; rising from the smoke was Mr. Seth Rowe. He bore a wealth of acoustic guitars and that pseudo-angsty, pseudo-Seattlean bedroom croon, and required at least two other things: a haircut, and a cup of tea to calm him down, as he seemed both far too boisterous, and inexplicably agitated. While he was still endearing and competent, it was the brilliant percussive skills of Angus Diggs that elevated his songs from forgettable to dynamic and absorbing; Diggs seems to have played with just about everyone, and for good reason – he’s one intense, inventive bastard, and he will make your band sound good.
Flames soon curled and licked and swayed to the tune of Max White, a velvety songsmith whose solo setup accentuated his husky storytelling, flitting falsetto and delicate stringpicking reminiscent of a lovelorn maiden tending to her loom by moonlight. Rich, smooth, but crisp, like red wine, from a bottle not a bag, and brought to a slightly more forceful climax with the eventual addition of Diggs’ magic drummery.
There’s a presence, a gravity, a charisma, a certain je ne sais quoi that most performers never quite have. Tim Rogers is not most performers and he has it by the gallon – you could tell from the moment he arrived bow-tied, tuxedo-clad, strumming with a captivating, casual cool. The Kalgoorlie Kid has been doing this for twenty years, and if his experience showed, he was anything but jaded -injecting solo classics, (like ‘Some Fella’s Heartbreaker,’ ‘I Left My Heart All Over the Place’) gems from the You Am I vault (“Girls, Guys, Guitars”) and the odd cover (Johnny Cash’s “The Beast in Me”) with an earnest, elated expression as if they were being played for the first time… words, perfectly delivered, navigated crowded sweaty pubs, dusty roads, heartbroken mornings; Rogers grabs those elusive fireflies of
indistinct sentiment and hazy secluded memory that dance through your mind now and then, and strings them into an illuminating chain of glowing phrases. Underpinning it all are simple but perfect chords and melodies, and tonight, some smooth double bass and more of the mighty Diggs on drums, and whatever else he could find to hit. Rogers returned for two encores, the sublime anecdotal requiem ‘Paragon Café’ and You Am I’s raucous ‘Gunslinger.’ A woman next to me said he’d mellowed out in his ‘old age,’ but he was adamant this wasn’t so: “We just rehearsed 15 minutes ago in a fucking park man! And people say I’ve lost my edge!” Indeed; Rogers is not a dying ember, but a still-roaring flame – and while the amount of species of deadly snakes in Australia may outnumber our bona fide rock stars, we’ve
still got Tim Rogers. And, he yells to the bedazzled crowd, “I’m not going anywhere.” Let’s hope not. He does ok.

Australia Does Not Exist
The Kurb Gallery
Saturday August 15 till Friday August 21
Australia Does Not Exist Art Exhibition
Featuring James Mellon, Adam Janali, Diokno Pasilan and Katie West
What shapes and constructs identity?
Is there an elusive quality, a ‘national identity’, which binds us all as Australians?
Do national identities ever have anything to do with cultural experience or are they more to do with a constructed image of a ‘nation’?
Australia does not exist is an exhibition featuring Perth based artists James Mellon, Adam Janali, Diokno Pasilan and Katie West. The diverse range of mediums employed – photography, oil painting, drawing and print, mirrors the cultural diversity of the artists - an Afghan refugee, an Irish migrant, a Filipino migrant and an Indigenous Australian.
The work of these artists reflects a contemporary Australian context whilst challenging the dominant perception of Australian ‘national identity’.
The opening night of Australia Does Not Exist, commencing 6pm Saturday August 15th, will feature performances from Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig, Mar Bucknell, Paul Harrison, MiteyKo, and The Kurbist Gong Band.
NB: If the art isn't enough to entice you, there will be free food and drink. Also please invite all of your facebook 'friends'.

Tomás Ford's Pity Party Cabaret
Hyde Park Hotel
Friday August 21st
For the opening night of my national tour, I wanted to do something a little different. So I've put together a night of cabaret excess in the otherwise straightahead punk rock surrounds of the Hydey. I'm talking laptops, midi controllers, comedy, performance art, guitars and noisy things. You'll want to come, it's a huge lineup and it should make for a pretty electric atmosphere in the cosy lounge room vibe of the Hydey.
The lineup looks like this:
Tomás Ford (strange little electro-man)
Léon: The Unprofessional (ex-Loon-X-Wing, ex-Up Syndrome)
Byron Bard (faux-literary wanderkind)
Jake Moore (will make you feel dirty)
Mar Bucknall (haiku-legnth performance art)
DJ Robbie Slut (master of dj oddity)
Brash And Sassy (shoulder pad pop)
Gabrielle Everall (high poetess of inter-gender strangeitude)
Antipoet (biting political rantitude)
Rabbit Island & Lil’ Leonie Lionheart (cute as a button folk duo who illustrate each others' songs. Extremely awesome.)
Patrick Pittman (literary guru)
Jay Pruyn (sarcasm)
The Gizzards (circuit bending and cape wearin')
Action starts at 8pm and goes through to 1am. It's pure party. You're gonna want to be there early, The Gizzards' shows are becoming legendary festivals of circuit bending insanity.

Kicking off ten days of mayhem will be a huge Opening Party with our good friends from the Funk Club at The Leederville Hotel from 7pm on Friday August 21.

Pow!, heroes of the surf and spaghetti western guitar Day of the Dead and the king of the keys Johnny Nandez and his Hammond Explosion. Plus we have the heroes of many a Radiothon Opening Party Rockin’ Rhys and Jumpin’ Josh holding down the decks and acting as joint masters of ceremony.
Finally, in the Boogaloo Beer Garden, there is class DJ action aplenty. To get your ass a-moving we have one of Perth’s most successful ever DJ/Producers Drum ‘n Bass maestro Mr Greg Packer, Cardboard City’s wonder producers Assembly Line, on the mic and the ones-and-twos multiple WAMI award winner and Full Frequency Friday tastemaker Dan the Man. Plus two men with at least too arms and usually too much bass The Brothers Elliott and the master of the Boogaloo Special Lucas.

Revenge of the Horns
The Swan Hotel (Lounge)
Saturday, 22 August
Matchbox Promotions & Champion Music present REVENGE OF THE HORNS.
Straight off The Next Big Thing showcase circuit, REVENGE OF THE HORNS celebrates the big bands with horn sections, funky rhythms and soulful melodies who missed the judges radar this time round.
Being Western Australia's premier band competition, The Next Big Thing opens its doors to the largest garden variety of performers in our state. As there is always so much diversity in these competitions, at the end of the day apples are being compared to bananas. This is a second chance showcase where punters get to see the jazz infused big band bands on a more intimate level without the time constraints and pressures competitions bring to the stage.
This show is simply about good melodies, dirty saxes and a tundra of trumpet solos ringing out through the air all night long.
THE ACCUMULATED GESTURES
With a frontman in control of absolutely everything and demanding attention in his orange suit, the tight five-piece blended soul and funk like nobody's business. (Drum Media)
JOHN AND THE INVERARITIES
It’s hard not to be impressed by how easily John and the Inverarities got it right the first go round. It seems this mixed netball loving group of jazz nerds find it hard to fail. (Fasterlouder)
THE BROW
The Brow filled the stage with barely organised chaos including glowy ball twirling and a groove more infectious than swine flu. (Fasterlouder)
GOODNIGHT TIGER
Over what were essentially simple progressions the two girls wove some truly interesting melodies. The two-guitar approach varied things and served them well and made for some unique moments as the girls showed strong song writing prowess. (Drum Media)
We strongly advise that you rock up nice and early because the last time John & the Inverarities & The Brow Horn Orchestra joined forces the UWA Tavern reached maximum capacity and people missed out queuing to get in. Throw into the mix two other top notch Next Big Thing bands with much acclaim to their name and you'd be a fool to miss out!
Doors Open at 8.00pm

Way Out West & Ro Sham Bo
Shape
Saturday, 22 August
Habitat, Tick Tock & Shape are proud to present one of the most influential men in dance music…
JODY WISTERNOFF (Way Out West)
Jody Wisternoff’s influence and contribution to dance music cannot be overstated.
Between breaking through to the DMC Hip Hop finals as a fresh faced 13 year old in 1986, and putting the finishing touches to his band’s fourth studio album in 2008 a lot has happened. His early 90’s act Sub Love were one of the largest draws on the UK Rave festival circuit and his hook up with Bristol dj Nick Warren in 1994 gave us the aforementioned Way Out West. With big singles (The Gift/ Ajare/ Mindcircus/ Killa) and big albums the majors came running and it produced their enormously prolific remix period touching up everyone from the fantastically cool to the fantastically desperate. The production duo also transformed into a 5 piece live act in support of the 2004 “Don’t look Now” album and Jody’s put out a few solo crackers in the interim with more to come.
So what connects the dots between the Global DJ, the teenage Hip Hop prodigy, the Hardcore rave act, the mega selling progressive house act and the solo nu disco offerings of this year’s hit “Starstrings”? Well obviously it’s Jody, but more than that it’s his quest for the perfect beat and bass line, the need to layer the best string, to squeeze the most perfect note from the technology available, to match the best track for the best moment at the right party. And it’s that constant desire for perfection that drives him on and on.
With the upcoming release of Way Out West’s new album, Jody brings his tripped out melodic grooves to Perth on Saturday 22 August at Shape Nightclub. Supported upstairs in the Habitat den by Flex, Kyran Smith, Luke Reti & Richard Lee.
Downstairs will feature Sydney boy Sleater Brockman from the acclaimed Ro Sham Bo, and local remix superstar Shazam. Supported downstairs in the Tick Tock lair by Bad Weather, Kit Pop & Clouds.
Presale tickets are available for the special price of only $15 at www.shapebar.com.au, so get in fast.

Vigilante Neck Tie Party is very much a new direction for The Scotch, with plenty of light and plenty of shade, a whole lot of groove and foray into motivated stoner.

The Bearskinner
The Blue Room Theatre
Wednesday, 26 August
They say that when a man gives up hope, the devil walks at his side. So begins this story.
A soldier marched through a dark wood, and he did not march alone…
This vivid re-imagining of a Brothers Grimm classic uses comedy and live music to tell the haunting tale of a man who has lost everything to war: his family and friends, his youth, and innocence.
When the devil wraps him in bearskin, fills his pockets with gold and makes a treacherous wager, so begins his seven year journey of dirt and riches, with a catchy tune, and violent streak, a has-been and a drunken forest along the way.
The is the first collaboration between The Duck House (The Swallow-Tailed Coat, Oscar, The Oresteia) and The Wet Weather Ensemble (A Reptile Dreamed).
The Bearskinner features: Gita Bezard (The Swallow-Tailed Coat); Alissa Claeseens (The Swallow-Tailed Coat); St John Cowcher (A Reptile Dreamed); Fran Middleton (The Swallow-Tailed Coat, Oscar); and Ian Sinclair.
Directed and produced by Kathryn Osborne (The Swallow-Tailed Coat, Oscar)
Music written by Marc Osborne and Fran Middleton

Having had a bit of a break while Felicity strummed around Australia, the band will be back together on stage. Joining them over the four weeks are a bunch of their favourite local bands, some of whom they’ve never shared the stage with.
Those of who haven’t seen Felicity Groom play for some time, you’re in for a real treat with a stack of new songs ready to play for you.
