Hairy Reviews with Lyndon Blue
HONOURING OUR ROOTS: THE HAIR OF PERTH
“Well, he DOES have great hair,” I exclaimed.
“One week,” chuckled our friendly neighbourhood Cool Perth Nights Editor, “instead of doing a gig review, you should write about people in Perth with really excellent hair.” This article is dedicated to the time-honoured proverb ‘be careful what you wish for.’
Meanwhile, it is also dedicated to the time-honoured ritual of mane manipulation. In the words of Diana Ross, “hair has always been important.” Alexander The Great sure as fuck didn’t conquer the Persian empire with a limp, lusterless mop. Did you know ancient barbers were revered amidst their tribes, and one’s tresses were trimmed so as to expel evil spirits? I, for one, did not. Today, modern society continues to worship hair, by making rock musicals about smelly hippies in its honour, and by naming a genre of metal after it, and by producing infinite varieties of fruit-flavoured shampoo. So where is Perth at, follicley speaking? I decided it was time to dust off the do-noculars and have a sneaky snoop.
First up I was chasing some old-school refinement. It’s all very well to paint your perm purple and prance about like a raging turkey but it takes finesse to invoke timeless, dignified style. In terms of the quiff you can’t really go past photographer Lloyd Hughes. His towering coiffure ascends silkily skyward like an ebony waterfall flowing in reverse. Paired with rimmed spectacles one discovers what might happen if Buddy Holly got his fringe caught in the sandwich press. Congratulations Lloyd Hughes on a darned voluptuous tussock.
Next we must acknowledge the untamed wilderness of the hair world. When encountering an individual with a notably flailing, unkempt fuzz, you know they’re probably about to either hurt you or entertain you. Local noisemaker Jake Steele of Injured Ninja generally resides in the latter camp but I’d wager his hedgehogesque head could impart its fair share of grievous bodily harm. Steele’s wiry strands fly out every which-way, especially up; twiddling his electronic gadgets he resembles a deranged scientist who’s just received a jumbo electric shock and is totally loving it. And on the subject of spiked domes, Jacob Fry (The FAIM Project) boasts a majestic Mohawk if ever I saw one; it’s a motherfucking hubba bubba stegosaurus.
The ‘Cousin It’ award must go to Luke Dux (The Floors, Embers, Infidels etc.,) whose face is invariably and utterly obscured during any given performance by his sleek keratin curtain; the ‘Curly Wurly Prize’ goes to the band Sonny Roofs collectively for their billowing corkscrew shagpiles, while the ‘Dreadlock Holiday Cup’ is afforded to DJ Missile, whose impressive and intimidating medusa-tubes are not to be sniffed at (lord knows I wouldn’t sniff them), though she only wins because the guy at the Fly By Night with the twenty-billion seven-foot dreds snipped his all off.
Last of all I must bestow the ‘Less is More’ trophy upon Ms. Kate Britton, whose near-naked noggin never ceases to impress me. And speaking of Cease, Andrew of said doomdrone trio has been responsible for some truly badass hair-decals on Kate’s noggin, including a spiderweb. A goddamn spiderweb-shaped haircut, peoplebitches. I’m told she’s had an octopus too, as well as the classic minimal ‘hawk. Totally ace!
OK, I know I’ve been waxing lyrical, at length. I trust our editor will go over this with a fine-toothed comb. But I do hope it gels with you, once you’ve had time to mullet over, and pick out the highlights. I’m sure I’ve made some omissions and posited some inaccuracies, but let’s not split hairs. I mean, I’m no Lester Bangs, but I feel I’ve done my part. Though I should probably brush up on my conclusion writing.
Happy hair-growing, you fine follicled folks!

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer
This week I will be taking a turn for the nicer (after last week’s brutality), and will attempt to figure out exactly what it is that makes us feel so good when we deeply inhale the scent of a rose. My research has led me to believe that the pleasure humans get from a rose goes a lot further than purely chemical (although it certainly does help), but instead is something that may be associated with collective unconsciousness, or at least social conditioning.
According to fossil evidence, roses are 35 million years old. Since cultivation started about 5000 years ago by the Chinese, the rose has developed into one of the most complicated family tree of any known flower species. There are thousands of different types and colours, and as we know, they are everywhere, all over the world. You can’t walk down a street without seeing at least three rose gardens in any given suburb in Australia. You’d think we would be sick of them by now. I know I am. I don’t like the way they look at all.
But it would seem humans have a very long held fascination with this particular flower. The ancient Romans had massive rose farms in the middle east, which were used for medicinal purposes (rosehip is still used in a powder form to help ease joint stiffness and pain), confetti, and perfume. The ancient Greeks went balls-out decadent with it, and, believing rose petals to be an aphrodisiac, forced peasants to stop growing food for a while and focus their energies on this apparently sexy plant, to make-benefit their orgies. That’s pretty brutal in its way. Also, the term “sub rosa”, which denotes secrecy and confidentiality, was coined by the Greeks, because they would have their secret meetings in rooms in which the ceiling was covered with decorative roses. They just couldn’t get enough of them.
Since that period, every western culture has had a deep respect for the symbolism of the flower. Romance, love, beauty, protection, peace, hope etc etc etc, all of it is attached to the rose. I personally don’t get it. I think lilies are way prettier. But who am I to argue with thousands of years of respect?
Getting back to its lovely perfume, the scent of any flower is there as a way to attract pollinators. Throw out a sweet smell, get the insect to come in a check it out, insect rolls around a bit and picks up pollen, gets distracted by another flower, does the same again, and huzzah! You’ve got yourself a pollinated flower. The human appreciation of flower scents is exactly the same deal, only we can’t roll around and help the pollination process, especially with the rose. Maybe we used to. Maybe we kept crushing the bushes in our blissful displays of scent-loving, so roses started to evolve thorns to keep us the fuck off. Disregarding all the other obvious reasons, this is definitely my favourite theory for the evolution of rose thorns.
But the rose is not the most beautiful smelling flower. According to scent nuts, lilly-of-the-valley is way above the rose in terms of awesome and satisfying to sniff. But due to the fact that we have all this history with roses, I think it’s very likely that the act of deeply inhaling the scent of a rose brings with it a rush of acknowledgement in our brain. Even if we are unaware of the actual details of history, go SNNNNNIFFFFFFFFF right up in the middle of those petals and we are taken somewhere else, on a miniscule journey in our minds through all the places a rose has ever grown, all the women who have ever loved them, all the men who have ever offered them, all of that, WHOOSH right through your mind tank.
Next time you’re near a rose bush, I dare you to give yourself a little test. Deeply sniff a rose, then deeply sniff another flower. The journey isn’t nearly as expansive is it?
