Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
DIRTY PROJECTORS @ THE ROSEMOUNT, SATURDAY MARCH 13
About half an hour into the their most recent longplayer, the Dirty Projectors’ braindaddy Dave Longstreth exclaims from within a plaited canopy of harmonies: “I wanna remake the horizon!” It sounds pretty ambitious. For mere mortals, that is. One gets the impression that a guy like Longstreth could probably do it five times over before breakfast - if not alone, then with a little help from his friends. About half a minute into this evening’s proceedings, I’m reminded that sometimes, when there’s just too much talent in one goddamn room, the intangible essence of it all has no choice but to squeeze its way out of the sub-ether. Thence it manifests itself as a sort of glowing goo that flies at you like a custard pie, leaving you gaping in disbelief like a dumbass startled deer. Saturday night, the pies came thick and fast.
The first pie was a PIKELET, a lone but infinitely delectable dessert served as entrée. Evelyn Morris, to whom the tasty moniker belongs, is not only Australia’s most formidable one-woman-band, but frankly, one of the country’s best musicians. “Woah there!” I hear you squawk, “She’s good, but that’s a big call!” Well, it’s true. Pikelet is a new kind of virtuoso; not in a fiddly jazztacular or clinically classical way; she is a maestro of loop pedal precision, of texture, harmony, the art of building the perfect pop song from the ground up, single-handedly, in real time. The tones of toy-like instruments (little creaky Casios, slide whistles, household percussion) trickle like rainwater through Morris’ gadgets, halving or doubling in time, coalescing into velvetine constellations of sound seraphically adorned with her
warm whispy voice, self-harmonizing, darting like dragonflies. Songs about supernovas and how many bugs one eats in their sleep unfold with the splendour and innocence of a picture book. As usual, Pikelet concluded with the charming thankyou song ‘A Bunch,’ a stratospheric choral march into a hope-gilded horizon. There are people trying to do what Pikelet has mastered, and most of them are lucky if they get halfway there.
I was already feeling sky-high when the six Dirty Projectors launched ‘Ascending Melody’ and carried me further up with it, into the cool mountaintops where fleeting notes and rhythms danced like mayflies, quickly evanescing in a spectactular flurry. Imagine you’re walking along minding your own beeswax, when suddenly a heap of hitherto unseen sprinklers turn on and, oscillating like wild, begin spraying you fiercely at irregular intervals. This is akin to a Dirty Projectors show except that, rather than cold, stale water, you’re instead doused in crisp erratic drum and bass syncopations, complex African-influenced guitar, stellar vocal arrangements and songwriting that twists and weaves through countless corners of the imagination. If they recall anything, it’s first and foremost Talking Heads – fourth tune in, ‘Knotty Pine,’ was
co-written with David Byrne himself – as well as afrobeat and, vocally at least, contemporary r&b. But their extraordinary synthesis of influences is too unique to really be described as anything beyond ‘Dirty Projectors.’ This is a band that has carved out a truly distinctive sound and honed it impossibly well; speaking to singer/guitarist Amber Coffman after the show, she mentions innumerable hours of vocal rehearsals to perfect techniques such as ‘hocketing
’ – and it shows. (She also mentions a gig the band played in a cave cut into a mountain in Sweden with a skate park next to it – how badass is that?) The set rolls on blissfully with highlights in their bewildering Black Flag reinterpretations, Angel Deradoorian’s goosebumps-on-yer-goosebumps feature tune ‘Two Doves,’ the unmistakable ‘Cannibal Resource’ and the magnificent pre-encore closer ‘Useful Chamber,’ with its groovy melting keys, stunning chorales and rocking ‘Bitte Orca!’ refrain.
It’s not so hyperbolic to suggest the Dirty Projectors are remaking the horizon already: reimagining something so desperately familiar as pop music to once again seem boundless, exciting, adrenalized, new and intelligent. Both the Dirty Projectors and Pikelet tonight dashed the myth that “indie pop/rock” capitalizes on amateurish rather than highly refined technical skills; and they did so without ever showing off. With this much talent in one room, it’s a wonder an audience fit in. Especially an audience inflated, balloon-like, with the air of so many gasps of wonder.

Alright already and other rants
A Word from Martin Belt about daft P-Town bashing
So it's widely known that something in Perth Western Australia propels humans to create unique music which is gobbled up by eveyone everywhere. It's also the case that the visual arts community is rife with activity from photographers, to painters to multi media arts proponents. Also the case is the quality of wine and beer produced in the state. WA folk are active producing fresh and relevant cultural things, that's my point.
The number of night spots in terms of an immensely good array of restaraunts, the more recent proliferation of small bars and the subsequent night spot hubs which amass around these restaraunts and bars proclaims that there is also activity here.
In terms of architecture Fremantle has kept it's culture by simply not trying to change with every trend - to briefly speak metaphorically of some of the garish modenisations behind the heritage protected facades in the City of Perth - Perth thought rollerblading was a good idea and bought a brand new expensive pair, only roller blades went out of fashion as quick as they allegedly came in. I'd suggest that it's the cold, unfamiliar and at times innapropriate starkness which leads to the CBD being not very populated at night. That said the new small bars on the southern side of the CBD are really beginning to change the night spot status of this area.
On the whole cultural activity is high in Perth, be it cover bands and strip clubs or new media art exhibitions and emerging drone band launches there's always things actually going on. Why then is it still a likeable pursuit to bag Perth? How is it that the short This is Perth won the WA screen awards in the people choice category earlier this month? Everyone who watched [and liked it] had to reengage with the Dullsville arguments put to Perth as that's all that the film borrows in terms of content - which they seemingly accepted as ok to laugh at.
There are preposterously active people in this town whose pursuits never cease and there's a community of these people interacting in the established and emerging night spots around P-town. Yet it's films like this that win awards - what's wrong with SOME of the people here. I truly wish it was these folk that left to try out their lives in Melbourne - promoters of these Dullsville arguments really oughta leave rather than make incorrect videos that play on daft themes.
There's that old saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all - but then again there's that other one which is - he hit first! So this is Martin Belt building up to quite a rant prompting all negative creeps to get out of here and take their lowest common denominator propaganda with them!
Perhaps it's jaded lovers that like this kind of thing? This way they can justify hiding away from social environments in an effort to not meet other amazing people, which would then challenge their precarious and rather silly towers of monogamy - Martin Belt sounds like a jaded lover here! : )
ANYWAY, HERE'S MARTIN BELT'S MISSION FOR YOU
Next time someone is bagging Perth ask to them how they're going to rectifying the problem which they're highlighting. If they are simply trying to shoot fish in a barrel please inform them that a) their opinion is nostaligia and that it needs to be updated b) they are wasting their own time if they're being critical with no plan to use of these observations and by creating cultural alternatives & c) I Martin Belt mainly want you to tell them to piss off.
Perth is what you make it xxx
