Lyndon Blue live reviews..
BRIAN HENRY HOOPER @ GILKISONS DANCE STUDIO, SUNDAY AUGUST 23
It was a grand old edifice, quietly confident of its place in the cul-de-sac, a pillared, official-looking thing with only a neon sign – GILKISONS - emblazoned across one wall to betray its setting in the current age. I wandered through wide wooden doors, discovering the foyer to be a museum of sorts - the walls lined with mounted heads of elks and goats, black and white portraits, wartime costumes and trophies. Passing a pair of punks I was met by a gaping mouth in the floor, opening wider, sucking me in down a tiered spiral oesophagus – into a vast, dim fog-filled belly where Siouxsie Sioux blared and beams of red swirled like luminous swizzle sticks in a big dark daquiri.
And floating to the top like a mangled strawberry were Mile End. They arrived on the back of a nice piece of OK Computer-esque spazrock, before plunging into the majestic and aptly titled ‘Rumblefish’ – a syncopated swell of vibrating gilled velocity thrashing about like a seething sardine in stormy seas. The quartet proceeded throughout in superior fashion to that I’d witnessed before: at once intense, shambolic, tightly wound.
The dry ice mist eddied around our nostrils as The Fags lugged their smoking stylings onto the large stage; at first indistinguishable from a gamut of novice gravelly ruckus-makers, but soon building to an immersive series of heavy, loping one-maybe-two-chord jams. There’s nothing more awesome than when a band has its own theme song, and The Fags’ “I’m A Fag” is a stellar (and delightfully irreverent) example. The stamina of drummer Tony Pola throughout long and burly grooves was admirable; moreso because he had another set in which to yet resurface.
The penultimate Painkillers did what they do best: short, sharp, grumpy blasts of semi-acoustic garage twang. To attempt to encapsulate in words the drumming of Mr. James Baker would be improper; while incredibly simple and classic, it‘s remarkably distinctive – after experiencing it once, you’ll spot it from a mile off. You’ve got to love these guys - they know full well it’s more often out of tune than in, they know it’s pretty messy, and they couldn’t give a rat’s.
Now if you’d recently regained the ability to walk after breaking your back, overcome drug addictions, and hit the age of 47, you might think it was time to take a siesta from your rock and roll career spanning several decades and including stints with Beasts of Bourbon, The Surrealists, The Voyeurs and the Bad Seeds. Brian Henry Hooper would disagree. Perched on a bar stool with SG sat strapless across his knee and a four-piece backing band including Tony Pola again (another ex-Beast), Hooper devoted most of his set to ballads and euphonious glimmers of world-wearied introspection, within a distinctly earnest antipodean style that stretches from Nick Cave to The Veils. His words dripped sardonic humour and bitterness, imbued nonetheless in hope and romance; his presence hovering somewhere between caustic and intimate. But an itch had been mounting – an itch for ferocity-
which was scratched with the closing ‘I Get Up Again,’ a positively brutal skirmish of distorted discord bouncing heavily on a slow 4-beat trampoline which finally gave way, shards of noise flying through the air, into your eye sockets, Hooper alighting the bar stool to fling himself at Pola’s kit, demolishing it Who-style. Somewhere along the line, he’d also inexplicably thrown 10 dollars on the floor in front of the stage. In the commotion, the Gilkison’s belly churned and bubbled, belching me out loudly onto the street, back past the elk heads, marching band capes, regal stairs, where I pondered… if the world of Australian music lacks anything, it’s not perseverance. Last week I reviewed Tim Rogers, who, twenty years in, shows no signs of slowing down; the same goes for Brian Henry Hooper, even, it seems with the odds stacked against him. It
occurred to me the resplendent historic building behind me was apt to present a musician who occupies a firm place in Australian rock history – but who’s got his own neon sign, a part of the here and now, steeped in tradition but still fresh like the cool Sunday night air, out into which we filed, and disappeared.

Steady Eye
with Tahlia Palmer
It has only been in the last few weeks that I have become properly comfortable in this new city I live in. I know of a few places to have a good cup of coffee, a good place to get soup, a few good bars, and I no longer have to ask for directions. This is good. I don’t feel like a tourist anymore. I think part of the reason it took me so long to relax here is something to do with how many small things I notice. I have been distracted by all the little things I’ve seen here, little things that I have never seen anywhere else. So here is a list of a few of them, in no particular order:
1. Two large groups of people, on either side of an intersection, dancing to two separate busking musical groups. It was hilarious. And beautiful. At least 30 people in each group, dancing unashamedly to the beat of the nearest drummer. I was hungry for bbq shapes, but forgot all about that for a few minutes. I wish I had my camera with me.
2. A street sweeper filling up at a fire hydrant. I was in a taxi, going home from work at 4:30 in the morning when I saw it. I have never considered how the street sweepers get their water before. Now I know. It made me smile to watch him.
3. The SBS news played on the side of a building. I was sitting at a café in federation square drinking some tea and I realized the giant screen 200 metres away was broadcasting the news. I couldn’t hear anything, but I watched it anyway. I don’t like television, but at in that moment, I’m glad it was there. The news finished, and Insight came on. I made an effort to stop watching, and started to write this list instead.
4. A pool of blood bigger than my torso, shaped kind of like New Zealand. The blood was so bright it was nearly pink. I saw it come out of the owner’s nose. I handed him a tea towel full of ice to put on it, and when he looked up to thank me, the blood was gushing out of his nose into his mouth and down his chin. After everybody had left, I took a photo on my phone of the blood pool, because not only was it very large, and looked like New Zealand, but it was also free of any foot prints. I thought this was quite a feat, given that there were at least 10 people involved in the fight, not including bystanders.
5. An attractive male with a razor scooter slung over his shoulder. This was another one viewed from a taxi. He was tall, skinny, wore good shoes, had a hip fashion sense etc, but the scooter was out of place. If he had the scooter, why wasn’t he riding it? Was he just picking it up for his little brother? Did he find it on his journey? Or was the road on too much of an uphill incline? My drunken friend, also in the taxi, yelled out something derogatory to him as we drove past. But I liked scooter man. Do something with enough calm authority, and you can get away with it, in my eyes at least. Seeing that guy made me miss the razor scooter we had at my house back in Perth. I like razor scooters. That thing was fun.

The End of Everything / Streetworks
Spectrum Project Space
Friday, 28 August till Sunday, 6 September
OPENING NIGHT FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST AT 6PM
The End of Everything and Streetworks are two concurrent solo exhibitions of meditative photographic works by Perth artist Kevin Ballantine.
Armed with notes on Renaissance art and old churches, museum floor plans, a digital SLR camera and two "anything-can-happen" plastic cameras, Ballantine headed to Europe in November 2008.
The result is this exhibition of photographs that beautifully capture urban landscapes, art, sculptures, monuments and people encountered whilst wandering through the streets of Rome, Florence, Sienna, Paris and London.
Of this body of work, Ballantine speaks of his intention to "exploit the qualities of the winter light, and the metaphoric resonance of leafless, barren urban landscapes".
Visually the shows will look very different given the two camera formats, united however by a catalogue essay in the form of journal excerpts.
The exhibitions are perhaps the final chapter in a body of work, a narrative, which Ballantine has been working on and exhibiting for over a decade, loosely associated with pilgrimage and sacred places.
