Steady Eye

...the careful insights of one Tahlia Palmer.

A few weeks ago, I landed myself a job in a grimy, noisy bar/music venue on Brunswick Street. I think it might be the best job I’ve ever had. It pays pretty well, we play whatever music we like, as loudly as we like and we have a lot of fun. I was welcomed by my peers and superiors alike with open arms, very quickly becoming one of the family. And what a family! Not only have I never worked in an environment quite like this, but I’ve never even seen this kind of thing before: the family includes the bar regulars.

The only experience I have had with bar flies in Perth was at the Hydey. The regulars there are well known to everyone who frequents the venue- those old dudes with their beanies and beards, quietly drinking and keeping to themselves. It was all I’d seen, so it was all I knew. But with a big population comes a wider variety of people, and in an atmospheric bar in a well known night-spot area close to the city, it makes sense that the type of person who frequents a bar is different to the type that has the same desire to drink away their problems in sleepy little Perth.

The relationships forged between the regulars and the staff at my new work place are, in all likelihood, founded on mutual respect- we all drink a lot of booze, and we all drink it often. The obvious difference is that they have to pay for it, and we get paid to do it. At first I felt a little guilty about that, but I quickly came to realize that it’s not as bad as it could be. Imagine working in a bottle shop. You’d get some brutal alcoholics in there, and they’d come back every day, and you would know that they’re going straight home to get shit faced alone. No one to keep them company, no conversation, no jokes, no fun. Unless they have a television. That would probably keep them company. I find that just as depressing though. But maybe they don’t? I don’t know. It’s not really my business.

But I respect the new alcoholic members of my family, because even though they have fallen into a horrible addictive cycle of what is essentially self harm, they have the courage, or simply the personality, to do with style, without hurting anyone else.

It might not be the most politically correct view point to have, but after falling into this industry a few years ago, and turning out to be good at it, I’ve learnt to have an attitude that makes the job easier on my sanity. And if I can get to know some interesting people in the process, it’s win-win isn’t it? I think so. And I think they do too.

PUTTING ON AN ACT @ PICA, TUESDAY JULY 28

One thing I deeply dig about the Perth arts community of late is its apparent willingness to dispose of traditional inter-disciplinary boundaries like soggy breadcrusts. Take, for example, the recent BOOM project, with its numerous and varied contributors including blooming doomers CEASE, or These Shipwreck’s ‘Leda’ release – originally performed as a film score. Of course, visual art, film, music and literature have always been overlapping peas in a pod, but you get the sense of a growing desire to blend them all into delicious pea soup – as encapsulated by ‘Putting On An Act’ – a marvellously eclectic collection of theatre, performance art, music and dance stretching across five days.

The opening night’s near-Vaudevillian assortment occupied PICA’s dark cavern of a performance space, arriving with a curious live art offering entitled ‘Crackdown.’ Herein two pedantic young gentlemen vehemently nitpicked the audience’s every feature - from posture to breathing patterns. A compelling idea, but its execution had an amateurism to it that made it seem like a good high school drama production at best. Next was ‘Grumpy Man,’ composed of disjointed fragments of speech and nimble interpretive dance, ostensibly exploring the backstory of the crabby curmudgeon’s demeanour, while ‘Fox in Sox’ was a flippant and entertaining morsel of circus-like magic tricks, hula hooping and political comment to the tunes of Ween’s ‘Japanese Cowboy,’ M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes’ and Carter Burwell’s ‘Ode To Joy.’

The first real stroke of brilliance, though, occurred during interval – when, amidst the chatting gaggle of the bar room, a girl in a pale blue dress began to stir in her seat at a lonely table. Serena Chalker rose and, to a sudden noise-laced soundtrack triggered by the barman, proceeded to dance and glide around the room, weaving between gobsmacked punters to leap at walls and pillars, caressing them as if looking for an escape. Without a formal stage, art and the real world blended together to create a wonderfully surreal sort of postmodern porridge which they called ‘As The Thread Unravels.’

Part Two of the evening saw a brief veering closer to rock and roll fare with the band Like Junk’s performance ‘Peaceful,’ drawing from the Thom Yorke school of contemporary paranoia and jargon satire. A short film projection of a mouth repeating commands made way for an eerie ocean of post-punky bass and piano drone, upon which rocked an unstable boat of jittery guitar and pained vocals, eventually joined by a drumkit sneakily concealed under the audience seating. The screeched repetition of the act’s title belied its semantic meaning, bringing a grim, brooding soundscape to a climax. While sounding a tad undercooked so far, this is a band to keep an eye and an ear on.

‘Seen Unseen’ was a visually intriguing but indecipherable bit of abstract dance, in which a fabric sculpture hung octopus-like from the rafters, casting its ominous shadow across the stage; and ‘Invisible Flight’ closed proceedings in a baffling and spectacularly delivered flurry of bizarre dialogue between subconscious and conscious mind-chunks, involving tutus, snails, Shakespeare and knives.

The best acts are on display on closing night, Saturday August 1, with a new array of performances every night in the meantime. Much like those lucky dips you get at Delicatessens for 50 cents, ‘Putting On An Act’ promises a true mixed bag of random goodies - and for every somewhat dubious liquorice bullet you come across, you’re bound to pull out an utterly toothsome strawberry cloud.

Accidental Monsters of Meaning

Spectrum Project Space
Friday, 31 July, Sunday, 02 August

Accidental Monsters of Meaning, the latest project from Perth based choreographer Aimee Smith, examines the twists and turns of consumer culture - a world where consumption is destruction, where the consumer becomes the consumed, and where survival is not a given. Set in the ambiguous and sterile space of a museum – zoo – viewing gallery – shopping mall world, the human being becomes a product of our times, the consumer becomes the product for consumption, and we are forced to face the realities of survival and extinction.

Accidental Monsters of Meaning is as a performance installation, made in collaboration with sound designer Ben Taaffe, performers Deb Robertson, Michelle Anderson, Rhiannon Newton, and with set construction by Ainsley Canning. The work runs from Friday 31st July through to Sunday 2nd August at Spectrum Project Space, with performances at 8pm and, for something a little bit different, a late night show at 10pm on the Saturday.

Come experience the oddity of viewing your own species behind glass doors.
