Mailout Soundtrack
Despite Tahlia telling us that Melbourne has been cold and the we ought not complain the Cool Perth NIghts office has an old radiator heater oozing its dull warmth - hope you guys are all keeping cosy too!
This week Lyndons has gushed all charmed about Vampire Weekend - he's not so amused by the dongos that were attracted to the show.
There's a new column at the very end of this weeks mailout. It's a weekly theatre review from local theatre focussed critical observer Christopher Isaacs - he'll be with us each week.
This week's mailout soundtrack comes from Ous Mal. swarming, warm, night sky like areas from this Finlandian ambient artist. Reeeeeally Nice. Click on the ice cream to hear them.
Steer clear of the drongos if ya can!

Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
VAMPIRE WEEKEND @ METRO CITY, SUNDAY MAY 16
Sometime in 2007, every Indie Music Blogger in the Entire Universe held a secret meeting, at which it was decided that a band called Vampire Weekend were to be hyped from here to Atlantis. Glowing praise from the likes of Pitchfork and Stereogum didn’t just put them on the map, it let them traverse the map’s every muted colour and neatly inked line in a flurry of dry-cleaned wool, crisp plaid collars, jerky clean guitars and wry, erudite lyrics.
Complete with a curiously cohesive cosmopolitanism and devotion to the Futura font, the whole affair seemed more like one of Wes Anderson’s wet dreams than anything that could truly occur in our disjointed, imperfect world. Now, a few years later, the source of all this hubbub is manifest in Perth – admittedly, in Metro City, when it ought to be in a country club or something – and I’m waiting in a comically lengthy line that curls around the block to find out if the Ivy League utopia of Vampire Weekend really is everything we dreamed it could be.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
tiny, freezing cold children.
The cold is finally upon me. I've noticed you Perthites are getting it pretty good at the moment, with your pleasant 22 degrees and sunny conditions, and I have to express my complete jealousy. I AM COMPLETELY JEALOUS. It's been jacket weather for a few weeks on this side of the Nullarbor, and I'm totally over it already. Want to know why? Keep in mind that my uncompromisingly negative tone may be because I'm suffering from seasonal affective disorder (fuckyou fuckyou fuckyou i'm cold and ihateeverything).
First of all, majority of Australian houses are not designed for our climate. At least not the ones I can afford to live in. BIG FAIL OLDEN DAYS GUYS. They suck in summer, they suck in winter, and with heating systems being a touch expensive to run, if they even work, it makes for the shivers, chattering teeth and a whole lot of aching bones. If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace, then... you are indeed lucky, but then you have to find someone to sell you enough wood to last the winter, and then you have to pay for it, all the while dealing with that inevitable guilt you'd be feeling about helping destroy precious forest and killing the ozone layer a little more with every cosy night you enjoy.

FRIDAY may 21
Double Feature
Grey Door Gallery
Double Feature is the latest show to come out of the Last Chance Studio Collective.
This time we see local artists Ryan Boserio and Timothy Rollin working back to back in a duo show hosted by the Grey Door Gallery, Claremont's new alternative art gallery/bar.
The Grey Door Gallery will be transformed by a clashing of two distinct contemporary styles. Ryan Boserio's surreal anatomy studies, progressive digital technique and plane obsession is an intriguing counterpart to the traditional illustrative style and street art installation that Mr Rollin is well known for.
If the previous shows from Last Chance are any indication. This exhibition is not to be missed.
Behind the Claremont Hotel, Bay View Tce, Claremont.

Foodchain's Crustacean Cup
a local band soccer game
On Sunday May 23, Perth’s local music community will rally around their favourite players as they prepare for the epic soccer battle that is foodchain’s inaugural Crustacean Cup.
The match runs from 2pm to 4pm at Wellington Square, with a half time performance from musical comedian Zack Adams and commentary from RTRFM's Peter Barr.
Captain Chris Pierucci (Capital City) has surrounded himself with skilful and enthusiastic players drawn from local bands Eskimo Joe, Red Jezebel, Sugar Army, Split Seconds, Emperors, Russian Winters, Capital City and Boys Boys Boys. His team Crabs FC are pinching the sky in anticipation as the match approaches.
They are set to battle punker prince Laith Tierney (Tyranocorp Management) and his Mighty Tyranocrabs. His rough and tumble comrades play in bands like Cal Peck and the Tramps, Bible Bashers, Mongrel Country, Mile End, Fear of Comedy, Chainsaw Hookers and Injured Ninja and are ready to regain the Tyros rightful place at the top of the food chain.
The Crustacean Cup is a free all-ages event and everyone is welcome. Pack up a picnic and arm yourself with hilarious heckles and biting soccer sledges then stake out a spot on the greens of the west end of Wellington Square.
Getting There
Wellington Square is located at the east end of Wellington Street and is easily accessed via the free Yellow and Red Cat services. It is a short walk from Claisebrook Train Station, and is also located within the Free Transit Zone, meaning punters can hop on any bus along Wellington Street and take the short trip east for free.

Sunday Record Hop
Defectors Bar - upstairs at the Flying Scotsman-Sunday, May 23.
Yes folks - the Sunday Record Hop is back! Old Razor Jack has been trawling vinyl emporiums, basements and car boots in Japan, the UK and France, to bring you rockin' connoisseurs the real killers!
As always, we'll be pushing the speakers out onto the balcony and bustin' out the wildest selection of vintage sounds, including primitive rockabilly, wailing harmonica blues, jumpin' R&B, crazed black rockers - and a LOT more! Of course, you can also expect a few crackles, kids - I'll be playing most of these things off original vinyl 45s for the knockout sound nature intended - except no substitutes!
To welcome the Hop back with a dose of sizzling glamour, the lovely Vivian Marlowe will also be unveiling her burlesque talents - in a performance that's sure to steam up the windows! (maybe you should be sitting inside for this!) Doors open at 4pm and if you get there early you'll grab the best seats - and hear some exclusive killers, before the rabble arrives! We finish at 7.30pm, when the Back to Mono crew take over the decks, to carry on the party.

Come and join us at a sparkly new location, the Banks Reserve Pavilion in Mt Lawley, for our Winter sale! Only the fortune tellers on TV news know whether you'll need to bring a brolly, but definitely bring a blanket and some snacks and get in early for a good spot in line.

Perth Jazz Society
HELEN MATTHEWS & RAY WALKER - CD LAUNCH - 'A Slight Diversion'
Monday 24 May 2010 @ 8:00pm
Admission Members $10 Student members $5 Non-members $15
RAY Walker and Helen Matthews go ‘way back’- from the early days of live-to-air television at Channel 7 where they appeared as youngsters on Club Seventeen and Teenbeat. Their paths crossed throughout the years, from the ‘sit ins’ on Sunday nights at The Hole in the Wall to the occasional studio recordings when WA had a flourishing advertising industry.
However, it was the late seventies that cemented their musical partnership at the Sunday sessions at the Highway Hotel in Claremont – ironically now a medical centre! A session that, within three months, had queues around the corner, and where patrons sat quietly and hung on every chord. The group was called ‘A Slight Diversion’ with bassist Brian Bursey (who also played electric bass and cello) and a young percussionist who played in the band Manteca, Gary Ridge, now living in Rio de Janeiro. Although so far away, Gary’s drumming is on three of the tracks on this new CD, entitled ‘A Slight Diversion’, made possible through the wonders of a laptop computer and 21st technology.
This recording project is a walkway of songs of beauty and sometimes pathos of swing and bossa nova and with a touch of humour. Ray and Helen are delighted to have as their guests for the evening: Jessica Gethin, violin, Sophie Walker, cello, Karl Florrison, bass, Garry Howard, drums/percussion and the witty and vivacious, Ali Bodycoat as presenter for the evening.
Don’t miss this partnership between WA’s ‘First Lady’ of jazz and Perth’s premier jazz guitarist.

Holly Miranda (USA)
she's in Australia as Lou Reed invited her..
I just want to get tickets for this now!
Tuesday, June 8, Holly Miranda (USA) plays Manhattans. Yesss! Popfrenzy is proud to announce the very first visit of American singer-songwriter and musician Holly Miranda. Invited by influential American rocker Lou Reed and critically acclaimed artist and musician Laurie Anderson to join the likes of Boris, Bardo Pond, My Brightest Diamond and King Khan for this years Vivid LIVE Festival - Miranda will also be performing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
You might have heard about Holly Miranda from a different source, like fan Kanye West. The hip-hop star pimped one of her tracks on his website over a year ago, and it wasn't long before hipster music blogs and even Vanity Fair joined in the
bandgwagon. Her solo album “The Magician’s Private Library” (XL Recordings) was released early this year to rave reviews and led to support slots with The XX, Friendly Fires and The Antlers. Miranda grew up singing in church, learning piano at age 6 and picking up the guitar at 14, around the time she began writing songs. After moving New York, she met the people she'd eventually refer to as bandmates for The Jealous Girlfriends, a reputable indie band that is currently on a break, Miranda said, but all continuing on their own musical pursuits.
Supporting on this night are Felicity Groom and the Black Black Smoke plus Rabbit Island. Tickets for this show are available thru www.moshtix.com.au $25+bf OR $30 on door from 8pm.

In the Black Box with Christopher Isaacs
Weekly Theatre Review..
DNA: A Recipe for Success
The West Australian Youth Theatre Company has sprung back into the foray of dynamic young art. In recent productions the company has shown much promise, but lacked cohesion to take the quality to the next level. DNA has this very cohesion.
Directed by Renato Fabretti and written by Dennis Kelly this is an exciting play about youth and an intriguing exploration of the adolescent mind. The fear of punishment and the questioning of ‘how far can one go’ are all up for discussion.
The cast all show talent and work well as an ensemble. Graham’s Phil speaks little, and in a silent stare emits ennui and self loathing beautifully, holding the audience captive with each little move. Cameron Clark gives a solid performance as John Tate, and Tom Vowles exudes confidence as the oddly macabre Kane. Donelle Gardiner’s cameo as Anna is highly commendable.
But the standout performance comes from Sophie Kesteven who shines as Leah. With almost a third of the play evolving around her monologues vying for Phil’s attention much of the production weighs on her shoulders, and satisfyingly she gives a performance with a maturity and intellect beyond her years.
Working together the cast is very good, but at times lacked an individual vocal strength to match the intensity of some of the scenes, and the repetitive hand gestures suggested a certain amount of nerves. Taking confidence from a strong opening night should allow the cast to warm into the more difficult moments the play has to offer.
Fabretti has put together a very strong team and has delivered a solid platform on which to display his talented cast. In minor criticism I would have liked to see more use of Matt McVeigh’s set, with a large shopping trolley sculpture mostly stagnant, and a speeding up of the more repetitive scenes.
DNA is a large step forward for WAYTCO, and recommended viewing for industry members looking for future talents.
Chris Isaacs
DNA is running at the Subiaco Arts Centre until Saturday 22nd May, bookings through www.bocsticketing.com.au or by calling 9484 1133.
