Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
HEALTH @ BECK’S MUSIC BOX, SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27
It can happen - despite our avid exploration into the glittering abyss, where we lurch over, stretching, to suckle that most elusive teat of exoticism. Where we’re desperate to taste every fleeting flavour that dots the infinitude. It can happen that we find ourselves yet again encased in that dim, sugary M&M shell of crippling homogeneity, where all visible surfaces are lusterless mosaics of G chords, D chords, A chords, four-four beats, hooks, choruses, jingles. Where the avant-garde record bin will not afford us an escape simply because it seems so cheaply and eagerly to promise one. It can happen that the gawking walls of the sugar-shell disenchant us into resignation until, one warm morning, some whopping motherfucker sneaks into the pop canon and comes down on that colourless carapace with a shuddering jackhammer! Cracks form and loud light crashes in and a face peers
down from beneath a fitted cap and says nonchalantly “Hi, we’re HEALTH, we’re from Los Angeles, California.”
It wasn’t a night anyone would soon forget, even those brimming with German lager. They’d recall the tribal dance party of GILGAMESH, a throbbing face-painted conglomerate of various Perth bands (Injured Ninja, French Rockets, Carbuncle & more) who rode primal drum ‘n’ bass beats into the fires of hell and back. In its jam-band styling the performance lacked dynamic variety and engaging structure, but it made for a genuine spectacle, and a truly mighty groove. They might recall the Cut & Paste Soundsystem who paired palatable tunes with whimsical projections. If they came for the headliners, they might rather forget THE TRANSIENTS, whose commercialistic electro stuck out like a sore, sherbert-encrusted thumb and struggled to win over the Box’s habitants.
But they’d certainly recall the band who were healthy by name and illin’ by nature.
The four pillars of HEALTH stand relaxed but ready in kite formation. “Don’t worry, this won’t hurt a bit” they seem to say as they strap you to a firework. And they’re right, you discover, as you’re blasted into a violent, jerky trajectory – this should hurt, but it doesn’t. Arrhythmic tantrums fill the stage, an anarchic yet finely tuned explosion; caged lions suddenly incensed by the smell of fresh meat. Blaring shriek-noise accents, stark percussive punctuations and Jake Duzsik’s mechanical vocals interweave randomly at breakneck speed - but just as you start to feel battered, you’re suddenly sailing steady through the 3D neon grid of toothy industrial-disco single “Die Slow.” You’re on the set of ‘Tron’ doing nangs with a bunch of sleepy ghosts. Don’t get comfortable though,
there’s a rough ride yet ahead. HEALTH rage on in an electric frenzy, drummer B.J. Miller a veritable percussive powerhouse – and then, as with so many marvelous moments, it’s over before you’re sure it’s even happened. A rapturous forest of Health-freaks want to make sure it has, and in a thankfully bullshitless gesture, Duzsik replies that they won’t go offstage only to come back on, but rather simply play for a tad longer. Even after a fervent encore, there’s a hankering for more. The brief but brutal kick-you-in-the-balls-and-bail-over-the-fence set was near-Japanese in its intensity, and near-sacred in its conviction.
Yes, HEALTH are a bunch of fashionistas from LA who give too great a shit about scoring cool points, but their music, stage presence and palpable sense of fiery ambition has the cojones to make that ultimately irrelevant. No, HEALTH haven’t reinvented music – their sound recalls much ‘noise-rock’ from Liars and Lightning Bolt to Melt-Banana and Boredoms – but they have reimagined it so as to create something that evades the rules, something that infiltrates the sugar-shell and gives you a much needed spanking. Noisy but never just noise, messy but never a mess. When once asked what HEALTH would do if they didn’t play music, drummer BJ responded that they’d design buildings together. One can only imagine that a HEALTH-house would be a structure of the most perplexing, angular and dangerous variety, with paint and venom dripping down the walls and
lightbulbs exploding in every ever-expanding room. But it’d be a hospitable place. A place where you only ever stop to catch your breath, drink another cup of battery acid, and get on with the party.

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer
Taco Leg and Golden Staph chat about playing Melbs recently
Two Perth bands were in Melbourne just recently. Taco Leg and Golden Staph flew across the desert to play a bunch of shows in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. I caught one of the Melbourne shows, at the Birmingham Hotel, and took a whole bunch of photos, further continuing my documentation of all things Perth related that I find interesting and exciting. Taco Leg and Golden Staph definitely fit this bill. I caught up with Richard Ingam of Taco Leg after he got back to Perth to have a little discussion about the tour, for the benefit of you dear readers.
Tahlia: Who's idea was it to go on this tour? Was it the first for either of the bands?
Richard: This was the first tour for both bands, yes. I think it was Onton (of Golden Staph's) idea, he's a super organised guy and has done a lot of touring before and wanted to do it with Golden Staph. I think teaming up with Taco Leg, who are dare I say are a bit more established, made it a lot easier because the Leg had some sweet Melbourne connections that hooked us up with shows. Onton was like a defacto tour manager, he pretty much got all the shit organised just because that's what he does. I'd probably still be in a slum in Sydney somewhere if we didn't have someone that was organized.
T: It takes a fair chunk of cash to ship a band over to the eastern states, how did you fundraise?
R: Well I stole my parent's credit card and we had a fundraiser show the week before we left which gave us a bit of pocket change. But yeah mostly we just tried to do everything on the cheap.
T: Did you really steal their credit card?
R: Well no, but I paid for all my flights on their credit card and haven't paid them back yet.
T: Given that you at least are now in debt, was it worth it?
R: So worth it. I had a badass time, met some amazing people, played in some fun places, caught up with some old friends, and generally partied.
T: You never ended up crashing on my couch, where did you stay while in Melbourne?
R: I stayed at this guy Nat's place which was awesome, it had heaps of bikes and New Zealanders, and a badass porch with an inflatable pool on it and some interesting foliage for decoration. Some of us slept on the porch but I commandeered a double bed somehow. Score of the tour
T: did you share the bed ?
R: Unfortunately no. This was probably the only down side of the tour. Aside from early morning flights, sleep deprivation and a rolling hangover.
T: Oh yes, hangovers. How did they affect Taco Leg's live performance? The show I was at, I noticed Andrew just kind of staring at the floor a few times. But I've seen him do that before...
R: I think I nearly fell asleep at the show at the Birmingham, I was so tired and hungover that I thought I was going to either start hallucinating or throw up. It was pretty damn hard, but I guess we all understood that it would be like that on tour. And yeah, we were more misanthropic than usual if that was even possible.
T: I know that Taco Leg has something of a following, you've been mentioned in all kinds of websites and magazines, including Vice; did that encourage much of a crowd anywhere?
R: I think it might have in Melbourne. I was surprised when a few people I didn't know seemed to know that we were Taco Leg and we were touring from Perth.
T: Melbourne does pride itself on being "ahead of the curve" to an extent. Did you get good audience response? And what about Golden Staph?
R: We both got really good audience responses, in Melbourne especially. At Pony (late night bar in the city) it was pretty fantastic. It may have been because half of the people in the audience were Perth ex-pats though. I think Golden Staph in particular made a real name for themselves. I think they sold out of all their tapes, which was about 60 or so.
T: Rad. I didn't know that many people still owned tape decks.
R: Yeah, it seems to be an emerging trend. I've certainly enjoyed rockin' the Taco Leg/Constant Mongrel split on my shitty car stereo.
T: A trend restarted by taco leg?
R: (laughs) I doubt it. Boutique labels like Fandeath are big proponents of analog media.
T: So what’s next?
R: For Taco Leg, HOPEFULLY an American tour (here's preying to the touring grant gods) and definitely an LP this year which is super exciting.
T: Oh wow. I can't wait for the LP.
R: Neither! Sharkey from Clockcleaner (US) is gonna fly over and record it.
T: Badass.

Monday March 8
Perth Jazz Society @ The Charles Hotel
JAZZ ON A STRING
Mon 8 Mar 2010 @ 8:00pm
Admission Members $10 Student members $5 Non-members $15
Virtuoso violinist, Ashley Arbuckle, continues to have an extraordinary musical career. A former member of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and an associate concert master, he later moved to England and for ten years worked as co-leader of the London Symphony Orchestra until 1990 when he returned to Perth to take up the position as concertmaster with WASO.
After a health problem that affected his playing and a subsequent operation in 2002, Ashley was unable to lead an orchestra again. However, undeterred he courageously created his unique style of bowing that enabled him to play his instrument (violin) again and returned to his childhood musical passion – jazz.
The Perth Jazz Society is delighted to welcome Ashley and his quartet as part of its 2010 program and the audience can look forward to some elegant and swinging tunes such as ‘Softly in the Morning Sunrise’, Johnny Mandel’s evocative ‘Two for the Road’, ‘All of Me’, ‘Besame Mucho’ and even Wardell Gray’s improvisional bebop solo, ‘Twisted’. Ashley will be joined by the swinging sounds of Richard Price (violin), Rob Hyner (piano), Murray Wilkins (bass) and Barry Cox (drums).
