Lyndon Blue an overview..

It’s that time of year again, Cool Perth Nightingales. The yule log is blazing on the hearth and the fat man with the jazzy red getup is combing his beard, polishing his sleigh, stuffing his sack. ‘Tis the season for feasting until you pass out or grog-guzzling until your great-aunt Gladys’ company seems enjoyable, whichever comes first; it’s also a time to sit back and, under the shade of your cracker-begotten papercrown, reflect on the twelvemonth that’s passed. So as this fateful year wraps itself up, gift-like, let’s peer into the oozing brandy-custard vat of memory and enjoy some timely festive reminiscence.

As sure as Garfunkel’s a Jew, two-thousand-and-nine has been a corker of a year for Perth music. The town has somehow continued to churn out one spiffing act after another, and creating a shortlist of the year’s highlights in local music has been trickier than a tramful of magicians. But there have been those bands and moments which, like those many-hued bulbs upon a plastic pine, simply glow with an exceptional vibrance.

In the post-rock postbox we received a parcel of premium proportions from fruity prodigies Apricot Rail. Their self-titled debut album offered a sophisticated, lush and uplifting journey through bucolic landscapes and chiming, contemplative melodies, resplendent with expansive instrumentation. The record’s abundant finesses were intensified in their few precious Perth performances this year – including a stellar album launch, and a delicious set provided in support of local legends Tucker B’s.

Rocking an equally dreamy boat, but one instead cloaked in darkness and fog, These Shipwrecks continued to concoct their haunting brew of atmospheric, droning song-jams. At times carefully structured and at others tumultuous, the group’s live arrangements of crunchy guitars, rich seeping organ, molten cello and a stormy rhythm section have never ceased to compel.

Perth’s had talented soloists pouring out of its ears, only to refill those orifices with tremendous tunes: from the monolithic yet fragile starscapes of Craig McElhinney, to the intimate songsmithery of Rabbit Island and Felicity Groom, to the tantalizing bluesy swagger of Hayley Beth, Abbe May and Div Craft.

Milling about the left field we’ve witnessed the likes of Carbuncle, Wind Waker and Mental Powers go from strength to strength – all of whom, one expects, we’ll hear a lot more from in both live and recorded capacity in the coming year, along with promising newcomers like Erasers.

Despite any Yuletide over-indulgences, we need not worry about getting as weighty as such hulking beasts as apocalypse-funk hellions Cease (whose recent ‘Cicada’ album is one of the year’s definite triumphs), mercurial pair Frozen Ocean, titan riff-eaters Atolah or the downright fucking colossal Drowning Horse, who quite possibly delivered the heaviest performance I saw all year.

Down the punkier end of the stocking we were spoiled for choice - whether you favoured the ever-outrageous Bible Bashers, the intelli-pop infectiousness of Project Mayhem, fresh-faced garagey arrivals Golden Staph or the dalkeithcore loer-fi riots of Taco Leg, there was something to satiate your ravenousness for raucousness.

Perth remains a hub of scrumptious psychedelia and while Tame Impala were flying the flag around the world, the likes of French Rockets, The Silents and Pond also kept the rainbow broth bubbling – the latter’s ‘Psychedelic Mango’ album launch early this year remains a simply legendary evening. Not once have I seen the Pondsters fail to elicit a mighty dance party. They are a portable funk-potion, a veritable shit-hot groove salad.

And yet – hark! Such as the years go by, so do I find myself approaching the end of this recapitulation and with so many glaring omissions. There’s likely a dozen or more bands with whom I feel a similar deep emotional, spiritual, erotic bond; it’s been far too mellifluous a year to squeeze everything into a single word-pudding.
More important than listing every good band or performer in town is acknowledging the splendid diversity and plentitude of talent that continues to appear like so many gifts mysteriously left in fireside stockings. It’s equally important we continue to proffer the milk and cookies of enthusiasm.
What mystic, what shaman dare predict what the cosmic Santa of music will bestow upon us in two-thousand-and-ten? Old venues vanishing, others back from hibernation, groups forming and others parting ways, fresh albums, tours, parties, jamborees, bands flitting about the country like snowflakes in the breeze? – only time will tell.

Until then, Cool Perth Persons - ! Thankyou for casting your peepers thuswards - do have a safe and rejuvenating Christmas - and one darned funky-ass motherbeast of a new year.

French Rockets / Injured Ninja - Split 12" Single and Music Video Launch

The Chapel Space
Saturday, 16 January

An otherworldly concoction of sounds and vision - a bold new project that has been steadily brewing deep within the sonic kitchens of Perth’s finest molten tone-generators FRENCH ROCKETS and INJURED NINJA is just about ready to be unveiled to the world. To celebrate, the bands graciously invite you to join them in a complete sensory experience at the NORTH PERTH CHAPEL SPACE on SATURDAY JANUARY 16th with a support from hugely missed Perth ex-patriots BONE. The event will feature ‘5D sound’, film/VJ projections and an intense state-of-the-art lightshow never attempted before in Perth.

In association with flourishing new Perth label HEARTLESS ROBOT RECORDS – ‘1x1 / IDDQD’ features an epic new single by each act, lovingly pressed onto glorious clear 45rpm 12 inch vinyl for your listening pleasure. 1x1 exhibits the finest foray into criminally hypnotic rhythms and compelling aural wonder that only the French Rockets can truly muster, while IDDQD is a totally pummelling noise-punk sonic attack that drags the listener deep into the atonal yet groovy realm of Injured Ninja.

Included with the record is an exclusive DVD featuring full-length videos for both singles – boundary-pushing surreal expeditions into visual accompaniment that most acts can only dream of. Professionally designed and produced by both bands with the help of the some of Perth's finest young talented film producers, the aural-based visual candy will have its
premiere screening before the bands perform, making the evening a truly unique event.

Audience capacity and copies of the vinyl are strictly limited for this performance so be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
