WHO'S ON THE UP? A REVIEW OF THE MOJO RISING BAND COMP

A concept that’s recently come to my attention is that of ‘Mojo Rising.’ I didn’t know what ‘Mojo Rising’ meant, so I consulted The Internet. According to The Internet, the word ‘Mojo’ may refer to: a magical charm bag used in the African-American folk magic of hoodoo; tobacco juice; or a slang word for self-confidence, self-esteem and self-efficacy. ‘Rising’ meanwhile is more straightforward, referring generally to such things as bread in the oven, celestial bodies on the horizon, fish in deep pools, and voices...

PLAYHOUSE THEATRE PRESENTS SHAKESPEARE'S TWELFTH NIGHT

Many Shakespearean plays lose meaning in the translation from the page to a modern audience.  Too often I am reminded of ridiculous Shakespeare productions involving some sort of 1960’s dance sequence and terrible hippie references.  Black Swan’s Twelfth Night does very well to homage the natural comedy of Shakespeare’s script, and not overwhelm the audience with a barrage of contemporary references. These aforementioned references do play a part in the production (including a 1960’s type love guru which, despite my particular annoyance...

FRIDAY August 6

Whitley at Manhattans !

catch him here before he flies east!

Friday, August 6, Whitley plays his final WA solo show. Following on from his critically-lauded debut The Submarine, Whitley returns with stellar follow up, Go Forth, Find Mammoth. Written and produced by Whitley, and engineered in a ramshackle studio on the Victorian Coast, the new album pushes the talented songwriter to his limits. This well-realised follow-up picks up where his debut left off in its warmth, beauty and intimacy, however it carries a much bolder aspiration. Go Forth, Find Mammoth is an engulfing journey filled with flourishes and triumphs. Multiple harmony vocals, strings, pump organ, pedal steel, horns and even a hammer and a bedroom door make up this albums truly rich and exciting sonic palette. After 18 months of touring with the release of The Submarine, including 3 US tours and countless laps around Australia, Whitley is primed to deliver Go Forth, Find Mammoth in a live arena to fans old and new. With a new band and a new sound, Whitley hits the road this November to spread the good word. Whitley will take his five piece band on tour nationally taking to all states and a territory with special guests everywhere. The Go Forth Find Mammoth Tour will be not what you are expecting and everything you have been waiting for. Supporting on the night is Seagull who’s new album Council Tree is bloody great. Entry to this very exclusive night of performance is $20+bf presale thru Moshtix or $25 on the door on the night from 7pm.

As the winter closes in, Leila and Lee take flight to the Scottish Highlands. The caretaker Frank, full of drink and deceit, offers them shelter in a hunting lodge. Just as the pair find refuge, the first guests of the season begin to arrive.

Rage Against the washing machine

at leederville laundrobar

On Saturday August 14, Noah Skape (from The FAIM Project) and Ben Elliott (From Montage of Jesus, Coronal Sky) will be playing an acoustic set for you while you wait for your clothes to wash.

The show is free, however please bring along a pile of washing and the $4 required to make a washing machine work. If you wish to dry your clothes, it will cost $1 for 10mins. You will also need to bring your own washing powder or purchase it from the laundrobar. There are nearby cafes to get food and drinks. Its an all ages show, so bring your kids along.

Why have a show at a laundromat? Well, its a long story that stems from my years of idolising Aaron Cometbus. Y'see, back in the day, Cometbus used to organise an annual laundromat show, so we're doing it here in Perth too. It will also give you something to do whilst you wait for your clothes to wash.

Chris Abrahams (The Necks) - Sydney

Life is Noise presents...

Play Scar Perth Album Launch
Wednesday September 1, 8pm
The Ellington Jazz Club, 191 Beaufort St, Perth

"Abrahams may be challenging expectations, but in Play Scar he has produced a record which will certainly exceed them." Mapsadaisical

"A magnificent piece of experimental music which is so vast and complex in scope that it never appears twice in the same light." 5/5 The Milk Factory

Chris Abrahams launches his new album Play Scar (Room 40), at Perth's premier jazz venue, The Ellington Jazz Club, on Wednesday September 1 from 8pm. Support comes from local guitar/noise maestro Craig McElhinney.

Chris Abrahams is best known for his work as the pianist for The Necks. In addition to his work with the Sydney-based jazz trio, Abrahams has a career stretching back over 25 years, including solo albums, several collaborations with Melanie Oxley, as well as in soundtrack composition.

Play Scar rolls from minimalism to musique concrte as Abrahams builds sweeping aural landscapes and hypnotic rhythm. Despite being full of diversity and juxtaposition, the record still manages to form a complete and coherent whole. Play Scar has rightly received brilliant reviews - it is a challenging, complex and breathtakingly beautiful body of work.

Craig McElhinney's new album Be Water My Friend is a stunning mixture of shimmering folk and mesmerising drone that confirms his reputation at the forefront of Perth's musical innovators.

THE BEAUFORT STREET FESTIVAL 2010

Life is Noise, The Beaufort Street Network and Town of Vincent present...

Saturday, November 27 in Beaufort Street, Highgate and Mount Lawley.

Beaufort Street has always been at the heart of cool, alternative, independent culture in Perth, so its high time that we got a festival to celebrate the music, art, fashion and food that make the precinct so special.

The Beaufort Street Festival will showcase the cutting-edge talent and diversity of Perths musicians, artists, designers and culinary tastemakers on Saturday November 27.

Perths cultural hub will come alive with unique, quirky and stylish displays of bands, temporary art exhibitions and fashion parades, with the action taking place on the streets, in shops, cafes, bars and laneways.

The festival is the brainchild of the Beaufort Street Network, a collective of local businesses and residents, and theyre looking for help to make the event a representation of all that the Beaufort Street precinct has to offer. Accordingly, the Network is putting the call-out for community involvement.

If theres something youd like to see be part of the festival, or if youd simply like to volunteer your time, contact Festival Director Dave Cutbush on 0400 498 362 or at festival@beaufortstreet.com.au.

ONGOING

Exhibitions Opening

Fremantle Arts Centre

Friday 23 July, 6:30pm
To be opened by Josh Byrne, Environmental Scientist and Presenter/Writer for ABC’s Gardening Australia.

Exhibitions continue until Saturday 19 September.

Fashioning Now: changing the way we make and use clothes

Australian designers Romance was Born, Issey Miyake and other high-profile practitioners prove that sustainability and fashion can coexist in this international exhibition.

Sustainability is becoming integral to the way clothing is produced, used and discarded. Fashioning Now explores various methods that are rooted in low-impact production. Fashioning Now includes garments, textile objects, photography, illustration and video.

Curated by Alison Gwilt, Course Director, Fashion and Textile Design, University of Technology, Sydney, and Timo Rissanen, Assistant Professor, Fashion Design and

Sustainability, Parsons the New School of Design, New York. With contributions by Alex Martin; Alison Gwilt; Bijan Sheikhlary; Helen Story, Issey Miyake (from the collection of Dr Gene Sherman); Jennifer Shellard; Kate Fletcher; Mike Betts and Mark Holt, Better Thinking; Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, Romance was Born; and Timo Rissanen.

Nairn Scott: The Glomesh Project

Gold is the ultimate status symbol which resonates across history and all cultures. Valuable gold fob watches and lavish candelabra sit alongside gloriously cheap nick-nacks from the Two Dollar Shop. Meticulously printed on hand-gilded paper, Scott bestows an elegance on the enduring and the disposable, the real and fake. The playful interchange of Scott’s ‘pick-and-mix’ aesthetic exposes the folly of equating good taste with social status.

Mark Parfitt: Dream Bore

Inspired by the humble bore, Perth artist Mark Parfitt celebrates the life supply of more than 80,000 suburban backyards. His own bore made redundant, Parfitt seeks alternative uses for this Western Australian icon. Assuming the self-reliant mindset of so many ‘can-do’ homeowners, Parfitt converts his home-made bore into an underground garden. Dream Bore is a fond and humorous application of recycling and reinvention to this backyard staple. The garden is accompanied by his exploratory drawings and diagrams and an artists’ book by Jamie Macchiusi (WA) and Gemma Weston (WA).

Parfitt is represented by Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth. Supported by the Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant which is a NAVA initiative, mad e possible through the generous

sponsorship of Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and through the support of the Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts

Vera Möller: darkrooming

Vera Möller (VIC) creates an eerie and luminous installation in which over 3,000 components glow and oscillate. In what Möller has characterised as a ‘museum of fictional species’, strange, organic forms are withered and calcified, accentuating the alien qualities of nature. Informed by her studies in theology and microbiology, Möller’s fantastical work is simultaneously bathed in an atmosphere of decline while predicting the emergence of new aberrant life.

Young Enough to do it anyway

August - November 2010, proudly supported by the City of Perth

Key to the City: 21 years of adventurous WA theatre making

The Blue Room Theatre, celebrating 21 years as Perth’s home to independent theatre, continues its milestone year with a brand new season of original, risk-taking performance: Young Enough to do it anyway, proudly supported by the City of Perth, launching on 22 July 2010.

Following the current season, Old Enough to know better..., Young Enough to do it anyway (August - November 2010), cements The Blue Room Theatre’s place as a leading performing arts resource organisation in Australia with six world premiere productions and multiple cross-continent collaborations by established and emerging professional theatre makers.

In August we start by welcoming back locals Hook in Eye Productions (Alaska, 2009) with the debut of Gasp by WA playwright Suzanne Rofe - award-winning designers combine steampunk stylings with Perth’s hottest acting talent to spotlight the flaws and fiction in our mental health system; while Perth’s own Zack Adams (Shane Adamczak) reacquanits himself with The Blue Room Theatre in his solo exploration of love, loss and ginger beards LOVE SONGS FOR FUTURE GIRL - a comedic musical journey in search of ‘The One’.

September begins with The Pride, a surreal and dark domestic comedy by Side Pony Productions (Heart of Gold, 2009, Scarecrow, 2006) that projects the characteristics of lions onto humans, co-created by director Zoe Pepper and an ensemble cast; and Jack & Jill by writer/director Jessica Craig-Piper brings a new team of creatives together in a portrait of morality and obsession - when a father dies, the small-town son seeks out the urban-dwelling sister he’s never met, only to be adopted by her friends as their latest art project.

October brings an exploration of extended lifespan and A.I. technologies by Canberra cross-artform collective Last Man To Die in their self-titled blend of drawing, percussion and performance - transforming the theatre into a museum from the future where your interaction with each ‘exhibit’ determines a unique performance; and celebrating Pride month is John Aitken’s latest offering R & J as performed by William Shakespeare and the Earl of Southampton, seeing the Bard and his muse lock horns workshopping a tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’.

November rounds out the season with Dawn Albinger’s solo No Door On Her Mouth - a philosophical answer and performative response to the question of how to say “I love you” without it meaning “I wonder if I am loved”, featuring dramaturgy by Margaret Cameron (VIC) and video art by Sam James (NSW); and drawing it all to a close, emerging writer/director Nate Doherty’s House of fun! incorporates real-life stories into a humourous new play that mirrors and dissects the modern phenomenon of share-house living.

Subscriptions to this 21st birthday season are available from as little as $48 and can be purchased through The Blue Room Theatre’s new online ticketing system which attracts absolutely no booking fees!

Still with some of the lowest priced drinks in Northbridge, The Blue Room Theatre bar (cool in summer, heated in winter) is the place to hang out before and after shows. Make your night complete with our drink and toasted sandwich deal for only $8! And yes, you can take your drinks into the theatre.

Break the rules, not the bank, and take your friends on a theatrical adventure to The Blue Room Theatre: Old Enough to know better... Young Enough to do it anyway, August – November 2010, proudly supported by the City of Perth.

The Blue Room & Side Pony Productions Present

the pride

From the director of 2009's Heart of Gold, independent production house Side Pony Productions present their sixth theatrical production, The Pride at The Blue Room Theatre from 1 - 18 September, before touring to Brisbane Festival's BF10 Under The Radar curated fringe festival.

Mapping the social patterns of a lion’s life onto human characters dressed as lions (impressively crafted by Esther Sandler), The Pride further cements Side Pony Productions’ signature style: visually striking, black comedy at its darkest.

The Pride is directed by Zoe Pepper, whose previous works include Heart of Gold, The Manic Pony, Scarecrow, and Motor City Blues; and features the talents of Brendan Ewing (The Red Shoes, Antigone), Russell Leonard (Equus) and Adriane Daff (BSSTC’s 2010 HotBed Ensemble, Yellow Moon, The Shape of Things).

Schvendes are a bunch of ghostly murder balladeers from Western Australia. This time round, they're offering a creepy tale set in one of Australia's most notorious worker's clubs. If you think you know where this clip is going, I assure you a surprise awaits. Delightful or damming - whatever you make of this, we hope you enjoy.

PICA's Winter Exhibitions

loads coming up at pica ..

PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.

Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.

Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!

In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.

i demand to know the dates of these exhibitions!
