Live Reviews with Lyndon Blue
TRACKSUIT CD LAUNCH @ ROCKET ROOM, SATURDAY OCTOBER 3
As NASA prepares to launch a Centaur Rocket into the surface of the moon, another portentous projectile is being primed; another launch, but one whose targets are simply the auditory craters on either side of your head. Tonight, local Rock-with-a-capital-R merchants Tracksuit set their new single ‘Tough Love’ on its fortissimo trajectory, a rough and tumble tune in the key of T-minus 3, 2, 1…
Oh! You Pretty Things are the electrified field of clouds we blast through first - at times wispy, dreamy and delicate, at others dark, dense, unleashing fierce lightning storms. Sultry ballads such as ‘Boulevard’ drift across your mind like a beautiful stranger ambling past the frosted-up windows of a downtown bar, before the wrath of a pounding rocker like ‘Desert,’ a grinding meditation on a powerhouse riff, strikes you down. There’s a focus on groove, chemistry, musicianship and soul that tends to belong to bygone days, but nevertheless sounds timeless; a curious meld of raucous instrumental stylings and the jazzy croon of Mei Lim results in some kind of real-life daydream in which a Motown diva is jamming with Led Zeppelin in a tin shed in the Nullabor decorated with Christmas lights, or something. Whatever it is, you should go and see and hear it.
Onwards and upwards, The Autumn Isles float down to shower us in their crisp, deciduous tunes, smooth sixties harmonies and buoyant hooks, catchy as those of Rex Hunt. The Autumn Isles probably won’t change your life or the course of modern music, but they may well brighten your night with a beacon of classic, unadulterated powerpop sprinkled with adrenalized guitar solos and a certain garage-rock sensibility.
Our rocketship takes a quick detour to the great solar orb, whereupon strum The Sun Orchestra, previously known as Circuits of The Sun – who tonight wove one of the worst genres of modern music, country, into a gorgeous, reflective, inventive and nuanced duvet of delightment, complete with mandolin and lap-steel. Their first song was admittedly their best; minimal, mesmerizing, mellifluous – but if the music’s inspiration ever waned, our interest was maintained by a live-art spectacle on stage, wherein an artist stood behind a tall backlit fabric screen, stitching thread into it, painting it with a psychedelic visual buffet, enacting a narrative of creativity, start to finish, in real-time. It was really quite brilliant, the sort of peculiar, ingenious initiative that should always be encouraged.
And finally we arrived at Tracksuit, who like the apparel of their appellation, are sweaty, tight, undecorative and familiar. A tracksuit-clad doll joins the three-piece in the room’s velvetine spacepod as they pummel their way across a lively string of tunesl; the rock is straightforward; in my view too straightforward to be particularly distinctive, memorable or engaging, but the gusto of the delivery is undeniable. We’re decked out with free glow sticks from some wandering glow-stick-benefactors and cognitively lubricated from the evening’s jugs of ale, and Tracksuit grow increasingly danceable and merry; their closing track ‘Who’s Feeling Fine?’ is a rollicking chunk of feel-good punkabilly that might get even the most stubborn foot tapping. Guitarist/vocalist Steve Hensby, also of the Sun Orchestra, goes about his rocking business with valiant
fervour, before the band finally collapses into a loud silence and the rocketship dissolves. Back on Earth we bask in the cosmic afterglow, peering at the heavens and the cloud of explosive dust left in the rocking rocket’s wake.

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer
Melbourne used to have a kicking goth scene. St Kilda’s Crystal Ballroom was the main haunt of emerging post-punk/goth bands in the late 70’s/early 80’s, including The Boys Next Door, Nick Cave’s first band. Herion was big, Siouxsie and the Banshees were big, and punks and Goths mingled in a beautifully melancholic party atmosphere. Or so I would imagine.
Since then, the Gothic culture has turned into a myriad of sub-genres, due to the amalgamation of other youth cultures, as well as the invention of new drugs, new styles of music, film, and of course, the internet. Traditional Goths still exist, but they’re very hard to find. And I’ve seen very few here in Melbourne. It would seem that most Goths from the 80’s in Melbourne died, grew out of their styles, or opened vintage clothing stores.
There are a few goth nightclubs around Melbourne, all playing your standard goth hits: Depeche Mode, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure etc… Although, I’ve never really understood how The Cure’s most popular tracks are so well loved by Goth kids. “Close To Me” and “Love Cats” are really really really happy, in music and lyrical content.
The 21 different types of Goth (refer to http://www.blackwaterfall.com/viewall.php for pictures) come together in their cliquey circles, lamely dancing together as the walls of their individuality crumble around them, soaking the already ready weak mortar of their subculture in alcohol and drugs that make them happy for a few hours. New bands in Melbourne that fall under the goth/industrial tag play at these clubs sometimes and their friends kind of like them and they might have a cousin who works in a record store in Adelaide who stocks their first record but their t-shirts are poorly designed by the only member of the group who stuck it out at tafe long enough to get a qualification. Any local bands with a following are just rehashing music and concepts that cool 20, 15 or 10 years ago, and have very few new ideas to speak of. To my mind, that equals shit.
There are apparently 12812 members of “Melbourne Goth Forum”. The website hosts annual get togethers, where those of the gothic persuasion can meet up for a fun night of socialising and networking. WHAT? And all the information, and the captions from last year’s photos, is written in a crappy “creepy” red font on a black background. Fuck you guys. You’ve fucked everything up by only being good at learning grungy Photoshop techniques from internet tutorials, and jerking off over Suicide Girls, and not taking any decent drugs. What would Nick Cave think? He’s seen you on the street and he’s not a fan.
So to sum it up, Goth was cool when it first happened. Bands from that era still rule- and the first wave of bands influences by were also pretty cool- but this rehashing bullshit, and the awful, awful evolution over the last few years has seen the subculture turn into a messy pile of corsets, pinstripes, and coloured dreadlocks, a group of people a mere parody of themselves.
