Reviews with Lyndon Blue
OUTSIDE IS RAINING BUT INSIDE IS WET: ERASURE AT THE BIRD
What’s long, wet, cold and fairly bemused? If you answered (a) a freshly caught eel, you weren’t wrong, but if you answered (b) the line trailing out into the drizzle-doused shadows of nocturnal Northbridge streets on Friday night, you were even less wrong. Now there’s nothing especially good about a long, moist, eel-like line of bemusees, and thus one is at pains to get that bit of the tale out of the way first. While it’s a shame said gentlefolk couldn’t get into the Bird that fateful night, the glass-half-full philosophy reminds us that it’s only because a bunch of snugly-housed, more punctual punters had already made said venue much fuller than said half-full glass.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
Princess Tahlia sees blood red
As you may have noticed by now, I am not a sports fan. I don’t care for running or jumping or throwing or kicking competitions. Nor do I care about the laments or excitement of those around me if they begin gibbering excitedly about sports. I don’t care about professional athletes, and I don’t care about the local bar vs bar soccer or AFL matches. I DO care about injuries that may ensue from these matches, but only because I like to give hugs, and injuries come out very well in photos. So for the last month, I have had a great time chuckling, and at the same time not caring, about the fucking FIFA World Cup.

Christopher Isaacs reviews The Bunyip of Bereley's Creek at the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre
There are still a few days remaining of the July school holidays, and though strictly speaking these performances aren’t necessarily for the Cool Perth Nights reading collective, I still think it valid perhaps for those whose duties may also involve the caring of younger companions. It is clear Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek, directed by Noriko Nishimoto, works best for a younger audience, but there is still plenty there for the theatrically appreciative.

KNOWLEDGE MUSIC presents INSTRA:MENTAL
THE BIRD
No other artists have had such an immediate impact in recent years as INSTRA:MENTAL - the highly acclaimed duo of AL BLEEK and KID DRAMA. Since their very early releases, the pair have been steadily building momentum with a number of influential singles. With a style unrestricted by tempo, their productions cross the artificial boundaries between contemporary genres such as DUBSTEP and DRUMnBASS and reach out to a wide range of listeners. Their tracks build tension through careful arrangements, capturing interest by revealing layers and subtly engineered sounds without resorting to tired clichés.

SEIZAN SEIZURE
Seizan Karaoke Bar 566 Hay St, Perth
Drowning Horse
Bamodi
Golden Staph
&
Splendid Friends
$5 ENTRY
Drowning Horse defy their collective musical repertoire (powerviolence outfits Extortion, Suffer, AIDS, Negative Reply) by slipping into slow motion within their intense whitewash of droning guitar, destructive vocals and sadistic noise. Bamodi deliver noise punk with hooks on a truly huge sound, while five-piece, Golden Staph play driving punk rock along with their darker ‘post’ leanings.
Experimental jam duo Splendid Friends dish up some uneasy tropical soundscapes, while DJ AM (aka Andrew Murray of Taco Leg infamy) will be filling in the gaps with his oddball combination of contemporary pop appreciation, underground sounds and a keen awareness of his inner weirdo.

Hells bells
A salute to acdc
Hells Bells is bringing their hotter than hell show to one of Perth’s coolest venues, Mojo’s Bar, Fremantle. The sauna like result of that combination is going to be guaranteed hot and sweaty, just the way real rock ‘n roll should be. Experience what it might’ve been like if Freo born Bon Scott had played there in accadacca’s hey day as Hells Bells’ new singer, (ex Riff Raff, 21 Guns) Wayno (Magilla) Curnow belts out near perfect renditions of AC/DC’s favourites in front of a band which has just recently notched up it’s 100th show. From the explosive TNT to the new heavy War Machine, Hells Bells respectfully cover more than 25 songs over 2 hrs in a pub concert that’ll leave punters saying “I can’t believe it’s not AC?DC” In fine support on the night will be the awesome Love Junkies and Waiting For Andy.
Tickets are available thru heatseaker.com, pre-sale $15+BF or $25 at the door from 8pm.

Campfires, Winter Whiskey and Liars # 3 at Mojos!
3rd year in a row .. first of three shows..
Sunday, July 18, sees acts two of Campfires, Winter Whiskey and Liars # 3.
This is the second night of songsmithery & bullshittery with The Justin Walshe Folk Machine and exalted guests at Mojo's Bar. After a run of incredible album launch shows around WA to release their highly revered new album Walking To China those 'pub-folk' pioneers The Justin Walshe Folk Machine keep the fires flaring with the return of their annual residency at Mojo's Bar this July - Campfires, Winter, Whisky & Liars #3. Set to the backdrop of a roaring open fire, candle light and whisky fumes, The Folk Machine deliver their 'dusty, train hopping tales' with an intimacy especially designed for winter to warm the cockles of your heart and console your frosty souls from the inside out. With a list of exalted guests from all over the country, this is a short list of shows not to miss. The Folk Machine are also excited as hell to show off their brand new lead guitarist Mr Mitch
Becker. This particular Sunday catch Kevin Smith & The Seven Storey Jumpers, Divcraft & The Big Old Bears & Tall Tales from Tank & The Loose Cannons (imagine sitting round a campfire with some fearsome strangers, thinking you should really get the hell out of there but you've just gotta hear the end of the story). Entry to this rich themed show is a cheap $10 from 6pm.

good little fox
LAUNCH THEIR EP ‘WE MAKE PARTY’ ON JULY 16 AT AMPLIFER BAR, PERTH AND JULY 23 AT SETTLERS TAVERN, MARGARET RIVER
Perth indie-rock band good little fox are ready to unleash a new EP called ‘We Make Party’ (out August 6 through independent/MGM) that will have you dancing on the most bounciest part of your shoe.

While they’ve been on a hiatus of late (mainly due to vocalist/guitarist Carl Fox jetting off to Switzerland and releasing an indietronica album called Chunky Rainbow) the trio are back with a musical offering encompassing driving guitars, flamboyant bass lines and plenty of expletives guaranteed to cause offense and/or dancing.
It’s all happening on Friday, July 16 at Amplifier Bar, Perth with support from brazen rock’n’rollers The Jackards and new-wave rockers Luna Parade. 8pm. Tickets $10 on the door or $15 with a CD.
The Perth show is followed by a launch down south on Friday, July 23 at Settlers Tavern, Margaret River with support from acoustic singer/songwriter Tree. 9:30pm. Free entry.

Raz Bin Sam WA tour!
man from israel makes peace through his reggae music
Raz Bin Sam, a Jewish artist with a dynamic style and sound, comes from a small town in the centre of Israel. His culture is ancient, war ridden and clouded with conflict. Inspired to shed light on his people’s story, Bin Sam moved to Australia to produce his works in English aiming to spread the Israelite truth internationally. In July 2007 Raz Bin Sam has signed with Jamaican label ‘DasVibes’ to become one of their team artistes alongside some of the biggest names in the game such as Daddy Rings, Gentleman, Elijah Prophet and Raz Bin Sam’s highly anticipated album OWN THIS LIFE is due for Australia / NZ release on July 2nd through Planet / MGM / South Bound, with tour dates across the country to support this exciting and dynamic release, stopping for the first time in WA for 4 shows. The album features productions by Melbourne producer Mista Savona, Israeli
producers Sabbo & Kuti and English producer Stephen Mosco of Jah Warrior Records.
Internationally, the track ’Something To Remember’ of the album was released as a single through DasVibes in 2009 and went straight in at No.1 on the US Independent Reggae Charts. It remained at this position for 4 weeks running before staying at No.2 for another 3 weeks. The second single from the album ‘Life Is A gift’ featuring Jamaican reggae artist Ray Darwin was released in a little later that year and was selected for the CD compilation of the April 09 edition of Riddim Magazine, the number one reggae magazine in Europe.
After years of live performances at some of our most popular festivals including ‘Splendour In The Grass’, and countless solo performances, Raz has established a strong and dedicated live following. Teamed up with Selecta Major Krazy to form Blaze Fire Sound, a traditional dancehall style sound system. The pair will be playing all original roots reggae and dancehall tunes.

Exhibitions Opening
Fremantle Arts Centre
Friday 23 July, 6:30pm
To be opened by Josh Byrne, Environmental Scientist and Presenter/Writer for ABC’s Gardening Australia.
Exhibitions continue until Saturday 19 September.
Fashioning Now: changing the way we make and use clothes
Australian designers Romance was Born, Issey Miyake and other high-profile practitioners prove that sustainability and fashion can coexist in this international exhibition.
Sustainability is becoming integral to the way clothing is produced, used and discarded. Fashioning Now explores various methods that are rooted in low-impact production. Fashioning Now includes garments, textile objects, photography, illustration and video.
Curated by Alison Gwilt, Course Director, Fashion and Textile Design, University of Technology, Sydney, and Timo Rissanen, Assistant Professor, Fashion Design and
Sustainability, Parsons the New School of Design, New York. With contributions by Alex Martin; Alison Gwilt; Bijan Sheikhlary; Helen Story, Issey Miyake (from the collection of Dr Gene Sherman); Jennifer Shellard; Kate Fletcher; Mike Betts and Mark Holt, Better Thinking; Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, Romance was Born; and Timo Rissanen.
Nairn Scott: The Glomesh Project
Gold is the ultimate status symbol which resonates across history and all cultures. Valuable gold fob watches and lavish candelabra sit alongside gloriously cheap nick-nacks from the Two Dollar Shop. Meticulously printed on hand-gilded paper, Scott bestows an elegance on the enduring and the disposable, the real and fake. The playful interchange of Scott’s ‘pick-and-mix’ aesthetic exposes the folly of equating good taste with social status.
Scott is represented by James Dorahy Project Space, Sydney
Mark Parfitt: Dream Bore
Inspired by the humble bore, Perth artist Mark Parfitt celebrates the life supply of more than 80,000 suburban backyards. His own bore made redundant, Parfitt seeks alternative uses for this Western Australian icon. Assuming the self-reliant mindset of so many ‘can-do’ homeowners, Parfitt converts his home-made bore into an underground garden. Dream Bore is a fond and humorous application of recycling and reinvention to this backyard staple. The garden is accompanied by his exploratory drawings and diagrams and an artists’ book by Jamie Macchiusi (WA) and Gemma Weston (WA).
Parfitt is represented by Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth. Supported by the Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant which is a NAVA initiative, mad e possible through the generous
sponsorship of Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and through the support of the Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts
Vera Möller: darkrooming
Vera Möller (VIC) creates an eerie and luminous installation in which over 3,000 components glow and oscillate. In what Möller has characterised as a ‘museum of fictional species’, strange, organic forms are withered and calcified, accentuating the alien qualities of nature. Informed by her studies in theology and microbiology, Möller’s fantastical work is simultaneously bathed in an atmosphere of decline while predicting the emergence of new aberrant life.
Represented by Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane; Sophie Gannon Gallery, Melbourne; and Tim Olsen Gallery, Sydney

In May 2010, The Tramps were nominated for a WAMI Award in the category of Best Blues and Roots Act, contributing further to the momentum generated by innumerous rave reviews from local street press and constant airplay of the Cinnamon EP courtesy of RTR FM, and a long list of Australian community stations. Their reputation as an exciting live act has seen the band run the gamut of venues and events across W.A,
earning support slots for such as acts as Heavy Trash (USA), Brian Henry Hooper (VIC) and Six Ft Hick (QLD), The Tramps were also invited to play alongside Adam Harvey, Angry Anderson, Suze De Marchi & Dave Mann and
many others at the Hope From Ashes Benefit.
Cal Peck & The Tramps are currently working hard to push the release of their second EP “KILL FOR YOU”, appearing monthly at notorious night spot Deville‘s Pad as part of an ongoing residency, and planning their first interstate tour later this year... More focused than ever on delivering you CD’s that never leave the player and exciting live performances that get you shakin’ your booty on the dance floor.
So, what are you waiting for? Head to Deville’s Pad On Friday July 23rd to celebrate the release of “KILL FOR YOU"!

PICA's Winter Exhibitions
loads coming up at pica ..
PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.
Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.
Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!
In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.
i demand to know the dates of these exhibitions!

Young Enough to do it anyway
August - November 2010, proudly supported by the City of Perth
Key to the City: 21 years of adventurous WA theatre making
The Blue Room Theatre, celebrating 21 years as Perth’s home to independent theatre, continues its milestone year with a brand new season of original, risk-taking performance: Young Enough to do it anyway, proudly supported by the City of Perth, launching on 22 July 2010.
Following the current season, Old Enough to know better..., Young Enough to do it anyway (August - November 2010), cements The Blue Room Theatre’s place as a leading performing arts resource organisation in Australia with six world premiere productions and multiple cross-continent collaborations by established and emerging professional theatre makers.
In August we start by welcoming back locals Hook in Eye Productions (Alaska, 2009) with the debut of Gasp by WA playwright Suzanne Rofe - award-winning designers combine steampunk stylings with Perth’s hottest acting talent to spotlight the flaws and fiction in our mental health system; while Perth’s own Zack Adams (Shane Adamczak) reacquanits himself with The Blue Room Theatre in his solo exploration of love, loss and ginger beards LOVE SONGS FOR FUTURE GIRL - a comedic musical journey in search of ‘The One’.
September begins with The Pride, a surreal and dark domestic comedy by Side Pony Productions (Heart of Gold, 2009, Scarecrow, 2006) that projects the characteristics of lions onto humans, co-created by director Zoe Pepper and an ensemble cast; and Jack & Jill by writer/director Jessica Craig-Piper brings a new team of creatives together in a portrait of morality and obsession - when a father dies, the small-town son seeks out the urban-dwelling sister he’s never met, only to be adopted by her friends as their latest art project.
October brings an exploration of extended lifespan and A.I. technologies by Canberra cross-artform collective Last Man To Die in their self-titled blend of drawing, percussion and performance - transforming the theatre into a museum from the future where your interaction with each ‘exhibit’ determines a unique performance; and celebrating Pride month is John Aitken’s latest offering R & J as performed by William Shakespeare and the Earl of Southampton, seeing the Bard and his muse lock horns workshopping a tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’.
November rounds out the season with Dawn Albinger’s solo No Door On Her Mouth - a philosophical answer and performative response to the question of how to say “I love you” without it meaning “I wonder if I am loved”, featuring dramaturgy by Margaret Cameron (VIC) and video art by Sam James (NSW); and drawing it all to a close, emerging writer/director Nate Doherty’s House of fun! incorporates real-life stories into a humourous new play that mirrors and dissects the modern phenomenon of share-house living.
Subscriptions to this 21st birthday season are available from as little as $48 and can be purchased through The Blue Room Theatre’s new online ticketing system which attracts absolutely no booking fees!
Still with some of the lowest priced drinks in Northbridge, The Blue Room Theatre bar (cool in summer, heated in winter) is the place to hang out before and after shows. Make your night complete with our drink and toasted sandwich deal for only $8! And yes, you can take your drinks into the theatre.
Break the rules, not the bank, and take your friends on a theatrical adventure to The Blue Room Theatre: Old Enough to know better... Young Enough to do it anyway, August – November 2010, proudly supported by the City of Perth.
