Lyndon Blue ..

...Yves Klein Blue @ Amplifier, Saturday July 18

If the Perth night sky was a gargantuan showerhead, disgorging intermittent jets of icy fluid, then Amplifier bar was one big warm fluffy towel. And wrapped up in it, we became dry and cozy, with pints in our palms and dreams in our hearts; yet before long, the towel was coiled into a mighty cocoon, and from it emerged a fairly badass butterfly in the form of Young Revelry. Featuring Tom King of End Of Fashion on bass, they had much more grit about them than the latter - navigating through mists of low, fizzing feedback to deliver burly and listenable, but equally forgettable, grunge-infused songs. Indeed, right down to the flannelette shirt, Young Revelry mined an early-nineties alternative rock sensibility… it seems that presently, the kids who spent their formative years frothing over Melvins, Dinosaur Jr., Pixies and Sonic Youth have now reached an age where they are making headlines in bands of their own, and channeling those influences with varying degrees of creativity. Sadly, this trio weren’t as convincing as some of their contemporaries; when a heckler exclaimed: ‘do a backflip!’ it became apparent they probably needed to in order to transform their passable show into a memorable one.

Next out of the chrysalis were The Novocaines, the painkilling pupae notorious for their unwavering dedication to the vintage rock recipe. Frenzied frontman Corey Marriott is a sort of amalgamation of every notable frontman since nineteen-sixty and as such, somewhat nondescript, like creamed corn; but nondescript in a violent, explosive, sexy way, like some really sexy-ass creamed corn shot at close range from a paintball gun. Kicking off with their seminal two-minute hit ‘Lately,’ the performance was almost as tight as the jeans – and the almost overblown enthusiasm throughout was undeniably contagious. A more recent tune - a languid, mellow, twin guitar power ballad of sorts – saw the ‘Caines expand their horizons, with positive results. One wishes Marriott would ditch the faux-Americana drawl, but nonetheless it’s a wholly enjoyable spectacle. If you require your listenings to be on the cutting-edge of the avant-garde, forget it, but if you like to have fun the way your parents might’ve, The Novocaines are bound to float your boat.

If one was attempting to predict the stylistic leanings of Brisbanites Yves Klein Blue (no relation), their Jesus Lizard and Lou Reed t-shirts were total red herrings; they purveyed neither caustic loudness nor art-school sophistocool (despite naming themselves after a French modern artist and referencing Kerouac with the title of their debut LP, Ragged & Ecstatic). This was straight pop on the rocks, in the vein of recent britpoppers like Mystery Jets, The Maccabees, even The Kooks – in short, music for fifteen-year-old girls. But don’t misconstrue – that’s not to slur fifteen-year-old girls, nor this band, for cheerful, tweeful indie pop is surely one of the hardest styles to carry off without sounding twattish and to their credit, Yves Klein Blue generally didn’t. Arguably the set’s highlight was an acoustic number performed by the ‘coming-to-a-magazine-cover-near-you’ cowlicked dreamboat, Michael Tomlinson - it peeled back the layers to reveal perhaps the band’s greatest strength: dryly witty and heartfelt lyricism. They tied it all up with buoyantly rendered crowdpleasers – ‘Polka,’ ‘Make Up Your Mind’ and ‘Getting Wise’ – before throwing in the towel. And like the butterflies we were we flitted into the night, hither and thither, weaving and darting through the chill, in search of whatever sweet nectar lay ahead.

Steady Eye

...the careful insights of one Tahlia Palmer.

This week is the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. NASA has released some conveniently timed reworked footage of the landing, which has reignited the passions of enthusiastic conspiracy theorists. Adding more fuel to the fire is the loss of the original landing tapes.

Many people believe that the moon landing was a hoax, a setup inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s special effects feats in 2001: A Space Odyssey in order to reclaim the American population’s trust in their government. And obviously, to prove to the Russians (and the rest of the world) that was still the most bad ass, technologically superior nation.
There have been a billion publications made about the apparent hoax, and just as many “No way, why would they fake that shit” rebuts. They’re on the internet, they’re in your local library, and they’re broadcast on your television. To me, the argument comes across a lot like the one between Atheists and Christians. The argument is definitely very different, but the similarities in the delivery are pretty amusing.

Christian: “But we can see proof of god!”
Atheist: “Oh come on, you’re a dumb shit for believing that crap.”
Conspiracy Theorist: “But we can see proof that it was faked!”
Believer in the landing: “Oh come on, you’re talking like a crazy.”

The theorists do have their valid points. But they are quickly rationalized by whoever it is who’s job it is to debunk those myths. Some stick out though. No doubt every one of you reading this has knowledge of at least one reason why people think the whole landing thing wasn’t real. Be it the way the shadows fell in the photographs (Myth Busters busted that one), the lack of stars in the sky, the strange placement of the crosshairs... Every one of those little tidbits does appeal to our sense of curiosity, to our knowledge that there are a lot of things governments do that we don’t know about, to our inclination towards believing anything that is said as long as it is said with enough authority.

I’m now going to state my opinion on the matter, just in cased you haven’t been able to figure it out already: I don’t care. I don’t think it matters. I believe that there is always room for more free thought about the things we’re told, but in this context… whatever man.

Whatever the case, real or faked, it’s happened already and there is nothing we can do about it. Life has carried on, and there is way more important shit to focus on. If the intellectual energy spent on writing those books and websites was channeled into, say, cancer research, I think we’d be a little closer to curing the fuck out of that disease.

There’s a counter-conspiracy that I am more inclined to believe: that the American/world governments have agents who seed the conspiracy theories in the minds of individuals smart enough to do their own research. The reason for this? To generate an atmosphere of distrust, which encourages the population to perceive the government as all powerful, able to do anything they like, and warrants a sense of helplessness in the face of it all. Give the people a little space to theorise and criticize, but only within boundaries that impede any real revolutionary action to be taken.

That’s the one we should be seriously considering. Not debating over whether or not Neil Armstrong was a hired actor.

Special Events

Slackjaw

In a Hip-Hop scene that has given birth to many polished artists, Slackjaw, (also known as Fremantle’s Finest) has remained undefinably raw in his talent and musical approach.

Making waves in the freestyle and battle circuits as early as 2001, a staple diet of live microphones has now been traded in for his locally famed mixtape series, “Eat A Rat”.

Starting out as a demo and catalyst for Slackjaw’s hunger for recognition in the vocal booth, these mixtapes have in turn become the staple diet of many Hip Hop fans in Western Australia.

The third instalment, “Fine Dining” has had his listeners hungrily salivating with the preview tracks featured on his Myspace clocking up over 1000 plays in the first month before its release.

With stores in Perth stocked up and free downloads available online, the table has been set for July 26th @ Mojos Bar Nth Fremantle, featuring Fremantle counterparts Back Yard Productions and Community benefactor Diger Rockwell, the serving suggestions have just been increased.

His canvasses build on the years of technique learned from the streets, combining his love for lettering and colour in a simple and effective way. His canvases are bold, striking and carefully balanced. This collection is heavily inspired by his first encounters of Australian marine life.

The Butcher Shop is pleased to present Amok's first solo show, and the first exhibition in the stores newly renovated art space.

Yuksek (DJ Set)

 Villa Nightclub
Friday, 24 July

Yuksek has become the standard-bearer of post Soulwax/Justice disco-rock club culture; by being cultivated and keen, mixing sonic strength and sensibility, sexy images and impromptu noisiness.

Yuksek’s passion for the art of making sound – whether it be the arrangements of the Beach Boys, the keyboard style of Ray Manzarek or the productions of David Bowie – led him to produce the next Birdy Nam Nam and The Bewitched Hands albums. And since his adventure started at the end of the 20th Century, Yuksek inevitably, naturally, discovered electronic music.

Yuksek’s first album, “Away From The Sea”, illustrates the disarming ease with which he mixes pop hooks with dancefloor devastation, post-punk riffs and acid loops, disco grooves, experimental arabesque flourishes, house beats and catchy melodies. Within a track you’ll hear hints of both the Pixies and Scissor Sisters, or Squarepusher and Giorgio Moroder, or Mirwaïs and Daft Punk. Guests on the album include rapper Amanda Blank (Spank Rock), electrofunk duo Chromeo, psychedelic-folk group The Bewitched Hands and the dance-rock of Shit Disco. All of which show that Yuksek is the latest version of a generation unphased, with the ability to easily switch between genres and sounds.

“Away From The Sea” is out now on Sound of Barclay in Paris, the more pop-orientated Fiction label (historic home of The Cure, and now host to The Whites Lies, Snow Patrol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kate Nash) will release the album in the UK.

After an amazing show at Parklife last year you cannot afford to miss Yuksek this time around, at Villa Nightclub.

Supported by Shazam, Death Disco DJs and the Boomtick Elite.

Saturday, 15 August

Perth expats Jack on Fire return to their coastal frontier roots to preach the Good Word of old time rock n roll and murky alt country.

Matured under a miserable Melbourne sky since fleeing their distant western outpost in 2008, the forsaken sandgropers and their newly initiated east coast apostles yield a debut album Stranger Cain with guns out blazing and the devil nearby.

Headed by the anguished murmur of lost soul and hardworking man Ben Blakeney, the Jack on Fire chain gang includes WA compatriots Samantha Wass, Dave Thirkettle-Watts and George Hyde sharing all manner of vocal and hollow-bodied tasks, along with Ross Goodale on drums. Sealing their fate and consummating their conversion to the other side is Melbournian addition Kelly Lane on violin

They will be joined on the night by Schvendes, The Painkillers and Felicity Groom.
