a darn sight better than heaps of things namely; yoghurt lolloped street press at cafes; coffee infused sleepy newspapers in smal bars; developing your prospective plans at the tourist bureau.

Live Reviews with Lyndon Blue

YOU AM I @ FLY BY NIGHT MUSICIANS’ CLUB, THURSDAY OCTOBER 29

I was a fly on the wall by nightfall, yawning above me the arched hangar-ceiling and refracted a hundredfold in my fly-eyes the room’s cordial décor; its grand hanging golden faces, smiling with calm repose; the jungle-plants adorning the bar-wall; the dangling parasols, stars and luminous scarlet cylinder lampshades that lit the glimmering path to rock.

From behind a mighty curtain blew a hyperactive four-piece typhoon - The Novocaines is their title; classic, ballsy garage rock is their trade. Everything about this bunch is tight: from their flawlessly raucous musicianship to their crisp song structures and form-hugging apparel. The emphatic battering-ram pummelfuzz of ‘Lately’ commences the Caines’ siege of your mobile body parts – a journey that races along a trail of irrepressible riffery, steel-solid drumming, howling vocals and occasional glimpses of Lou Reed-esque melancholy. Though one does wish that frontman Corey Marriot would occasionally concentrate more on singing than springing about like a bug in a frying pan, and, he really must give the dangly earrings a miss. I appreciate the androgyny vibe, but they do him no favours.

If effeminacy’s not your cup of tea, then The Kill Devil Hills are likely your espresso: here are five burly gentlemen whose mothers you had better not disrespect. It’s beards, singlets, brawling distorted guitars and a roisterous momentum as exemplified in vicious new single ‘Cockfighter’ - rock and roll with an embargo on bullshit is the order of the day. That’s not to say the Kill Devil Hills’ meat-and-potatoes can’t have some sonic garnish – and when the tremulous fiddle of Alex Archer arrives on the scene, it soars through the fog like the plaintive ghost of a hawk. Arguably their most memorable tune remains the slow-plowing ‘Drinkin’ Too Much,’ whose four-chord progression is the sort of thing one assembles in their first week of playing guitar; this simplicity is its strength, creating a sincere, accessible canvas for its anguished but infectious lyrics.

Now my bluebottle wings were abuzz, for soon to emerge were a band who, from what I can gather, are incapable of putting on a bad show. There’s a certain je ne sais quoi, some kind of special gene, a damned enchanting quality to them that’s kept them kicking for so long – and it’s immediately palpable when frontman Tim Rogers appears, in a bent akubra and unbuttoned flannel shirt, to straddle the stage like an obedient stallion. While his banter was garbled absurdity (“You are all clones! Clones are good at fucking! I am a flannelette god! Let’s be dreadful!”) the band’s musical effort was totally coherent; loud, sweaty, visceral and intelligent, the group’s straightforward tonal palette nicely trimmed with splashes of feedback and wailing organ. From subtler numbers that showcase Rogers’ witty, pensive lyrics to outright rollickers like ‘Gunslingers’ and a marvellously grooving cover of 1910 Fruitgum Company’s ‘Indian Giver,’ there wasn’t a moment at which you could doubt the conviction and jollity of the four You Am I lads. It’s a marvel well worth beholding, and in the instance that you were kept you from attending, the whole show’s getting a replay tonight. In ‘Givin’ Up and Getting Fat,’ Rogers declares he ‘Should give up/ Get fat/ Forget the fucking romance.’ But witnessing the band in action, you don’t have to spy his tongue planted decidedly in cheek to know that none of those things are, by any stretch of the imagination, on You Am I’s to-do list.
