Live Reviews with Lyndon Blue

PIKELET @ LITTLE CREATURES LOFT, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 15

So I sauntered down the brine-bitten boardwalk and past nodding turquoise keels, my hunger perhaps unwisely satiated by a banana fritter, eventually carried by the bracing salt-zephyr into a room perched snugly atop a brewery. The candlelit beer-filled dome, a warm and darksome port for some most seaworthy sonic skiffs.

In the band’s first official performance, fresh-faced ERASERS ventured along endless trails of primeval drum grooves, layered sparingly with guitar-loop triplets, simmering synth drones and bleak monotonous vocals recalling the desolate chant of Melbourne’s Fabulous Diamonds. The sound betrays a pious fixation upon minimalist rhythmic motif and its meditative capacity; melody, though lingering, takes a back seat. Erasers’ most striking piece however was their most drastic departure from this formula: a rippling pool of loop-based ambience over which pattered the amplified sound of singer Rebecca’s typewriter – evocative, eerie, and daring. If there’s any concern, it’s that the band seems to be trying to sail into super challenging waters whilst still finding their sea legs; music so exposed and rhythm-centric demands precision of the highest degree – but ambition is an admirable thing, and before long these minimalist mariners will no doubt have rubbed out the minor inaccuracies in their sketch.

FELICITY GROOM soon drifted along with naught but a guitar, an autoharp and barrel-loads of talent and charisma. Her first tune, performed solo, embarked with the delightfully cheeky line “I won’t bite/unless you want me to,” – which rang true of the whole performance, carefree and congenial, but sinking its teeth in at just the right moments to conjure a hefty swagger. The distinctive guitar work of Andrew Ryan formed the perfect accompaniment, near-crumbling electric-crackle mists on the horizon, while the lambent vocal of Groom shone through – often in duet, as per their wonderfully irreverent ‘anti-love song' fine boy stay.

The ship of sound now moored for a time at RABBIT ISLAND. I thought I’d seen this lady enough times to get a pretty good idea of what she does, but tonight blew my preconceptions (favourable as they were), completely out of the water as might a deep-sea torpedo. An a cappella overture of typically candid, cute and colloquial lyrics was suddenly looped into rapturous oblivion and joined by the frantic and immaculate drum-and-glockenspiel genius of Matt Maguire (Schvendes/Adam Said Galore/Tucker B’s). Electric guitar and organ additions allowed Ms. Amber Fresh to burrow into a wider ambit of tonal colours, while the last song – purely looped vocal harmonies – can only be described as sublime.

Sublime’s just one of a novellas’s worth of words you could fling at the ensuing set by Melbourne’s Evelyn Morris, aka PIKELET. Alighting on the loft stage with a casual demeanour, she wasted no time in displaying her mastery of the loop pedal. Building unorthodox backing patterns with microphone taps, hand claps, guitar plucks, slide-whistle, cascading 8-bit synth and pounding floor-tom, Morris slowly and seamlessly builds layer upon layer of mellifluous instrumentation until there stands before you a glimmering emerald castle of sheer aural pleasure, the turret atop which is a ghostly velvet voice. The technological calculations are practical genius, but moreover, songs like ‘New Zeal’ reveal Pikelet’s unbelievable prowess as a songsmith, crafting pop tunes of an unconventional but strangely timeless quality. Indeed, Pikelet could easily have made a career out of playing folky songs on a guitar or piano, but her mind-cogs clearly spin in far too wild a manner for such pursuits. Morris closed the show with the charming thankyou song ‘A Bunch’ before a loftful of enthralled Pikeleteers demanded an encore (she graciously obliged). It’s a sad thing, for Perth-folk at least, that this prodigious talent, whose music is even sweeter than her namesake, must dash so soon back to eastern lands. Hers is a harmonic harbour you could gladly berth your brain-boat in for a very long time indeed.

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer

“Ben Lee. Your thoughts?”
I have posed this question via various internet mediums in the hopes of figuring out why the Australian singer/songwriter is as popular as he is.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to receive much of a response. As far as I know, not many people I know have listened to Triple J since skip hop (Australian hip-hop) took over the airwaves, and this is where Ben Lee gets his air time.

Much to my surprise, my friends and acquaintances expressed myriad generally negative responses. Very quickly too, and very heatedly, with no option for debate; it ranged from disappointment to wanting him dead. These attitudes follow in every internet forum I have read on the subject. No one likes Ben Lee anymore.

“Most grating fluff in recent history.”

As such, I have concluded that Ben Lee is not popular, so much as merely well known. No one I’ve spoken to actually likes him as a musician, actor (although I do like Rage in Placid Lake quite a bit), or even a human being. He’s residing somewhere on the edge of vaguely respected (whether it is because they liked one song he wrote years ago, or because he was dating a pretty attractive Hollywood actress for a while, I am unsure) and ignored because he’s shit, but it is generally accepted that he will be a part of Australian music until he dies. Even if no one is buying his records.

“Australia's tallest midget?”

So let’s trace this “respect” thing back to the beginning.
Ben Lee’s band, Noise Addict, was signed to Steve Pavlovic’s label, Fellaheen Records, when our Ben was a mere 16 years old. Pavlovic was a bit notorious for being awesome, mainly due to an association with the Seattle grunge scene. Getting Nirvana to Australia at a pivotal point of their career is something worthy of respect.
“Forget Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Lee looks like a foot.”
So this badass dude signed cute little Noise Addict, and everyone went ga-ga for these kids with their quirky pop mentality and little cherub faces who toured with Sebadoh.
Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Mike D (Beasties Boys) helped out too, and released the band’s records in the United States. Tick one for respect for context over music appreciation.

“Noise Addict was his only good stuff. Everything else sucks.”

These days, there are two Ben Lee fan clubs on the internet, but neither have more than 30 members. I went to his Myspace page, and while he has over 74 000 “friends” it would appear that no one cares to make any comments on his page beyond self promotion. To top it all off, I tried to have a look at his official website, but Firefox won’t let me view the website because it poses a risk to my computer.

“Part of this site was listed for suspicious activity 4 time(s) over the past 90 days.”

Very, very fitting. I find it suspicious that all his film clips have interesting/cute ideas but are rarely well executed. After all this time, you’d think he’d have at least one awesome filmclip. Or maybe someone was checking tour dates in those 3 months… Even the internet knows that idea is laughable.

“Indescribable hatred.”

In 2007 he got some less than interesting musicians to work with him on some stuff, namely Mandy Moore and Benji Madden (Good Charlotte). I don’t think anyone gives a shit. He just keeps digging his own grave, getting more and more smug and annoying while continuing to write increasingly easy to listen to, sickly sweet, shallow pop tunes. This is evident by the amount of his songs that have been used in advertising. He has been writing TV jingles since “Awake is the New Sleep”, and he’s probably getting paid a whoooooooooooole lot of money for it.

He seems not to have had a fanbase in Australia for a long time, which is why he is concentrating his efforts elsewhere. Dumbing down his already uncomplicated music even further, to reach that big ol’ cash cow that is the United States of America. Classic move, easy if you’ve had the right connection since you were 16, totally boring to hear about.
I was expecting my dislike for the guy to motivate me to write another 50 words or so, something is holding me back… disliking people you don’t know personally is really very, very fun on occasion, but when the person is so bland you can’t envisage finishing one more sentence about him… I’m bored. I choose to end this story now.

Cease launch!!

Hyde Park Hotel
Friday November 20

Cease have been regularly jamming their unique brand of improvised stoner drone around Perth for the past 5 years.

They were recently involved in a collaboration with filmmaker Ben Stewart which documented their explorations into the possibilities of disused public spaces and investigated the boundaries of free performance in Perth.

Earlier this year they recorded 40 minutes of hypnotising, heavy-kraut drone with the help of up-and-coming sound engineer Jay Brandner. Months have been spent meticulously mixing and remixing the album to create a structured composition of hauntingly dark, intense jams, with a calculated sound most fans will be unfamiliar with from the more commonly free and improvised cease performances. The visual artwork was a collaboration between Andrew Britton and David Egan.

The album will be launched on Friday, November 20 at the Hydey, with support from Gutter Guitar (Pex), Atolah and Giant Tortoise.

Doors open at 8pm. Entry is $15 and includes the $15 CD.

Badminton Bandit is excited to present cicada, the first full length album by cease.

ME AND THE DEVIL BLUES - The legend of Robert Johnson and the Delta Blues

Monday 23 November 2009 @ 8:00pm

Admission Members $10 Student members $5 Non-members $15

This concert comprises the 2009 PJS commissioned work by Callum G'Froerer and Brett Thompson, featuring the voice of Sophie Brous.

ROBERT Johnson was born in 1911, died in 1938, and is arguably the most influential of all Delta blues musicians.
In a short, prolific life he created an incredible legacy of music.
`We aim to conjure up the spirit of Johnson, the landscape of his life and the Delta region in Mississippi,' wrote our composers in their PJS application.
`Our aim is to summon the dry heat of the southern air, the sound of work songs drifting along the breeze off the fields, the feeling of the harsh ground beneath one's feet, and the sounds of young Robert Johnson's guitar, full of joy, heartbreak, love, lust and pain.'
Me and the Devil Blues presents music influenced by Johnson's recordings and the music and surroundings that inspired him.
`We hope to blend original jazz compositions, pre recorded sounds from field recordings and of Johnson's recordings, and spoken word and storytelling.
`Robert Johnson's music is a perfect source of inspiration to create new music that is not just soulful, joyful, and heartfelt, but also a way to explore a music which was so pivotal in the development of jazz. Combining Johnson's music with modern jazz compositional techniques would be a fascinating culmination of two very distinct and strong styles. We hope to develop a new body of work that will be not only entertaining and exciting for the audience, but deep in levels of expression that could only be achieved through this unique union of two distinct styles.
