Live reviews with Lyndon Blue
JEAN GRAE & TALIB KWELI @ VILLA, THURSDAY APRIL 15
The live review
The taxi rounds the corner to find itself in a swarm of fitted caps, hoodies, jeans and bouncers. Spilling onto the otherwise quiet Thursday-night street is a queue that snakes up a maze of ramps and into the mysterious glow of the Villa. The crowd whose wrists awaited the kiss of an entry-stamp wears an encouraging demeanour: neither that of the blasé, bourgeois hip-hop-hipster nor the beefing belligerent would-be thug, but that of the fervent music fan approaching a pair of its idols with baited breath. Inside the grand prism, Jean Grae and Talib Kweli prepare their vocal chords for what is set to be a mammoth workout.

steady eye with tahlia palmer
having a laugh at Australian comedy
The Melbourne Comedy Festival has just finished it’s month long run. For the duration of the month, I had a friend from Perth sleeping on a shitty single mattress in our lounge room. In return for letting him spread his clothing and empty cigarette packets all over our floor, he got my housemates and I free passes to all the comedy festival shows.
At first, I resolved to go to as many as I could; you know, try something different, experience this city, get involved with… uh… all the things that normal people do? Maybe? “At least three a week!” I told myself. It didn’t happen. I didn’t go to a single comedy gig, despite all the free time I’ve had over the last 4 weeks. Why not? Because I couldn’t bring myself to risk experiencing the disappointment I figured was coming.

FRIDAY april 23
Stravinsky, Brahms and a set of Motets!
at winthrop hall this FRiday
REQUIEM, conducted by Nicholas Bannan, comprises three musical works that communicate the conviction that the human spirit survives mortality. Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments was written as a personal memorial to his friend, the French composer Claude Debussy, and embraces elements of Russian Orthodox lament.
Brahms’ Requiem features soloists Toni Johnson and Andrew Foote as well as members of the choirs of Hale School, Penrhos College and Trinity College. Setting the composer’s own selection of texts from the Bible and presenting a structure parallel to the Catholic Requiem Mass, the work is replete with musical references to the composer’s Renaissance and Baroque forbears.
A set of motets and partsongs on the theme of rest and remembrance completes this program

GHOSTDRUMS EP LAUNCH
bar 459
Kick off your Anzac Day long weekend with Ghostdrums (aka Pete Guazzelli) in a rockin' launch with special guests Lil Leonie Lionheart vs Rabbit Island and Chris Cobilis!
Love Is My Velocity is proud to introduce Ghostdrums as he launches a limited edition USB release at Bar 459 at the Rosemount Hotel on Friday April 23 from 8pm.
As an eight year old learning to play the drums, Pete Guazzelli came up with an inventive way to make sure his family didn’t disown him. By draping a big white sheet (complete with eyeholes) over the top of his kit, he muffled the noise and created Ghostdrums.
After a fruitful period drumming in local bands like Fall Electric, The Kids and Gata Negra, Pete has revisited the Ghostdrums set up by building a unique machine from parts lying around the house. Combining a gold-sparkle drum kit with pedals, synths, loopers and the junk-percussion that’s been clogging up the spare room, Ghostdrums is this long-time Perth-based musician’s new solo project.
Keeping things spooky, Ghostdrums has joined forces with Melbourne artist Ghost Patrol to produce an interactive 4-track USB release that contains a bonus video for title track ‘Morning Sun’.
Ghostdrums’ experimental electronica combines intricate production with a lo-fi acoustic sound that’s as innocent and whimsical as his performance set-up.

Acts of Undressing
Perth-based independent theatre makers The Duck House are excited to present their latest creation, Acts of Undressing, a hilarious tale of three un-fascinating women in fascinators, from April 20 to May 1 at Yirra Yaakin Theatre.
In this dark, disturbing and bloody comedy three loveless milliners [hat makers] escape their boredom by creating aimless, fashionable, empty accessories. Brought together by their insignificance and insecurity, these women spend their days working on a deadly suntan, their only interests the seagulls they use for feathers and the man who lives in the lighthouse.
Written by Ian Sinclair, whose previous work includes The Bearskinner (2009, The Blue Room Theatre), Acts of Undressing features live music written and performed live on-stage by talented jazz musician Marc Osborne. The stellar cast include respected Perth-based performer Brendan Ewing (Red Shoes, Antigone) alongside Fran Middleton (The Bearskinner), Gita Bezard (The Bearskinner) and Alissa Calessens (The Bearskinner). Directed by Kathryn Osborne (The Bearskinner, The Swallow-Tailed Coat, Oscar).
April 20 to May 1
Tuesday to Saturday, all shows 7:30pm
Yirra Yaakin Theatre 65 Murray Street, Perth (near corner of Pier Street)
