Live reviews with Lyndon Blue

PIVOT @ BECK’S MUSIC BOX , THURSDAY FEBRUARY 18

We all have our pet peeves, those minor irritations that get our bloomers in a tangle. For some it’s telemarketers, or chatterboxes in movie theatres; for my great-aunt Clarissa it was paellas – the versatile rice dish drove her insane – old girl ended up in her Oslo apartment nibbling phone books and mumbling about pan-fried seafood. I, for one, have always been severely miffed by music journalists who fail to see bands they’re meant to be reviewing; thus proceeding to attempt a review based on hearsay, or just shrugging the incident off. It’s slacker than a pair of pleated trousers. Well, here I am in the confessional; knees aground, eyes afog. Forgive me father for I have missed Qua, the opening act this evening at Beck’s music box. If you want to post some hate mail, I won’t hold it against you. If you really want to upset me, send some vintage port and a wheel of Red Leicester; I’d seriously hate that.

I’d always thought of PIVOT as less of a band of human beings and more as the inadvertent sound emanating from a giant whirring robot-insect from the future as it grinds into gear and whizzes off jerkily into the post-apocalyptic distance. But while seeing three man-dudes bobbing about under magenta glow instead of a machinated arthropod was a bit of a let-down, the set launched with all the taut mechanical whomp-bang flourish that one would expect from this reputed threesome, Australia’s sole contribution to the esteemed Warp Records roster; though the Box’s soundperson saw fit to keep a conservative lid on the volume. Pivot’s is an audacious sound that feeds the skeletal, algorithmic rhythm joust of Polvo and Battles to a fluorescent electro-dragon. For a band seemingly grounded on the solidarity of mathematical groovezones however, the results are sadly inconsistent. A few tunes in, a friend and I turned to each other with the same thought ensconced uncomfortably in our skulls: this song, with its pulsating synth bass, galloping drumline and stadium guitar chords, had ended up sounding like Muse. Much of the set consisted of new songs being debuted; but rather than being impressive successors to the band’s thus far quality output, they were more like nebulous conglomerations of trendiness, awkward meetings of ambient-drone-wash-whatever and triplety-tribal-percussive-you-know-the-shit-I-mean, ultimately feeling like a tedious blind date. Animal Collective are a damn good band; that doesn’t mean every man and his electro-dragon has to try and emulate them. Nay, Pivot sound best when they stick to nifty, catchy mathrock layered with warble-synth appropriated from some eighties movie soundtrack, or sliced from the wheel of Red Leicester you sent me, as epitomized in closer ‘The Quick Mile’ and encore ‘O Soundtrack My Heart.’

One thing I totally do love is pleasant surprises. Substantially better than the unpleasant kind. SEEKAE were definitely the former – a lush cloud of synthesized endorphins conjured by three guys with samplers, laptops, drums, guitars and other miscellany. Opening strain ‘Void’ is a sublime piece of fragmented, ethereal trip-hop that sounds like honey and jasmine smells leaking in through cracked windowpanes. Oscillating between glitchy Dilla-esque instrumentals, live songs and finally, caffeinated 8-bit tantrums, their sound seemed confused in the most delightful way; though their self-assigned genre term, “ambient ghetto” is pretty close to a descriptive bullseye.

Beck’s do good things for us with their bulging box of noises - though it’s got a way to go. Charging $8 for Beck’s stubbies when no other options are available anyhow seems a bit cheeky – moreover, ticket prices generally exceeding $40 make it super difficult for those on a student budget (read: target demographic) to really take advantage of the delicious full range of bands on offer each year. With those prices, a place that could bring everyone together for parties of supreme funky unity suddenly climbs to a certain level of exclusivity.

But while the best things in life are so seldom free, there’s usually a way to dodge the expense. So when a ticket’s not on the cards, think outside the box; grab a rug and a feast, find yourself a pleasant spot on the outside grass, and under the watchful eye of the mighty purple Perth Wheel - soak up some of the most toothsome tones from across the big blue globe.

Steady Eye with Tahlia Palmer

a pet perspective?

A massive percentage of Australians grow up with household pets. Over 83% infact. So we’re all very well accustomed to the idea of the pet, and what it means to look after and love a small animal.

But what if you’d never experienced pets as a child? What if no one had ever shown you how you can bond with an animal and have a rewarding experience from it? Pet owners must look very, very strange through those glasses.

Think about it for a moment if you will.

Dogs are highly demanding and even attention seeking. They require exercise, which is up to their owner to give them if the yard is not big enough (which it often isn’t), they need to be fed a few times a day, then you have to clean up after them, make the house/garden dog proof…

And cats are not much better. They are a little more self-sufficient than dogs, but they are more prone to fur coming loose and sticking to furniture, they fight a lot, kill smaller animals and leave them around the house, and tend to ignore you. And for both animals, the vet bills can be enormous.

”And for what?” asks the never-been-a-pet-owner. Well, there is certainly no conversation. No help around the house. No gifts, no cooking, no blow jobs… It’s all take and no give. Sure, to walk a dog may give you more incentive to exercise yourself, but when you think about it in terms of pure animal nature shit, a human taking a dog for a walk on a leash is like a kangaroo taking a rabbit out for a bit of a run. Or a whale pulling a dolphin around. A bit cute, totally, but if you take away all the conditioning you’ve had and the acceptance you’ve grown up with, it’s a liiiiiitle bit weird. Pets really are weird. Pretend you’ve taken some acid, then reeeeeally think about it. Yep, there it is. Woooahhh man.

All of that aside though, I really miss having cats. I recently came across a blog devoted to cats, and it helps to satisfy my cravings for pets. I am awestruck by the sheer devotion to kitties displayed in this blog. (http://miaowmix.blogspot.com/).

But getting back to the point, it really is a craving. While it may appear kind of weird, or even a little fucked up to a select few, having a pet alleviates loneliness. It’s actually been proven to aid the recovery of the sick, based on mental attitudes and being distracted by cute balls of fluff etc. Referencing back to previous week’s musings about the nature of existence, when one is not able to rear a child (see: too young/too busy/too single), it is in our nature to transfer these maternal or paternal urges onto something else. Like a cat or a dog. I believe the term is “fur babies”.

So next time you feed your dog, or let your cat walk over your key board as you’re trying to type, take the time to muse on pets as a concept. And send some mind-love rays to those who have no idea how warm you feel when you get a big slobbery tackle or a sleepy paw stretch tap on the nose from your non-speaking best buddy. Bless.

The Polyphonic Spree!

Use H3 tag to make a subheading

SoCo Carnivale is a confetti-drenched, royal encounter of bee-bop, honky tonk and Cajun thunder that blows like a 50 billion watt circuit cable straight into your side of town this February featuring the mammoth orchestral party collective known simply as The Polyphonic Spree.

Also joining this fancy dress French jazz parade is The New Orleans Bingo! Show, direct from New Orleans Mardi Gras. For over half a decade now, The Polyphonic Spree have been cutting a singular swath through the pop culture landscape, spreading a positive energy that makes people scratch their heads and ask questions while presenting music that's colourful to the ears.

The robes may be gone for now but a purposeful and exhilarating experience is here to stay. Tim DeLaughter and his touring party of eighteen take the party wherever they go; in February they will be bringing it to Australia and you are invited to join the parade.

Adding 100% authenticity to the Big Easy feel will be The New Orleans Bingo! Show, a curious spectacle, a thrilling phenomenon and one of the very finest entertainments on the theatrical stage. The New Orleans Bingo! Show is a multimedia stage experience that includes original black and white silent films, dancers, ingénues, audience interaction, bingo games, slapstick comedy and shady characters who remind you that every stage door opens into a dark alley. Ringleader – or ringmaster – Clint Maedgen, a Louisiana native and sixteen-year New Orleans resident, describes the show as “a wild nightmare hidden in a heart-shaped box of chocolates. I last saw it riding a fiery stallion, headed down that golden highway of dreams.”

All in all it is set to be one rollicking night of fancy dress, great music and some weird and wonderful characters - join me at the Fremantle Arts Centre for a night you'll never forget!

These talented musicians conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, their music stand up to re-listening time and time again.

One of the great cult bands of Australia, the deceptive simplicity of The Necks' music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.

"Although I had known the individual members of The Necks, particularly bassist Lloyd Swanton, for many years it was not until I saw the controversial play and then the film, ‘The Boys’ that I truly experienced the mesmeric sounds of The Necks.

Virtuoso players in their own right, Chris Abrahams, piano, Tony Buck, drums and Lloyd Swanton – The Necks created a niche that is now a torrent and is continually being embraced by both International and Australian audiences. Individually they come from of a wide spectrum of contemporary jazz backgrounds from soul grooves and hard bebop to their own form of instantationalism - prodding, provoking and always interesting." (Helen Matthews)
