Today was another exception, with the sun shining benevolently and a faint breeze riffling my hair as I stepped off the train. Mysterious forces magnetized me along a sleepy suburban strip and the more active Albany Highway to...

FREAK
Throughout human history, we have been fascinated by those amongst us who deviate from the norm. That crusty punk kid down the road, the super-tall African man on the train, the amputee you passed on the street, that girl with cerebral palsy at your kid's school, that guy on the TV with big hair who makes jokes about his past drug and sex addictions, the junkie who had the ridiculous police photo you saw on the internet- they are not exactly like...

DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH: A REVIEW OF GASP AT THE BLUE ROOM THEATRE
Productions which explore a mental health issue risk bordering on patronising or overwrought dramatic tension, but at the same time can allow for creating and innovative forms of storytelling. Fortunately for Gasp, there is little of the former. Unfortunately there is none of the latter. Directed by Michelle Sowden, this production of Suzzane Rofe’s script lacks a creative flair and plods along with little imagination. Crossing between a modern story of Grace’s (Natalie Holmwood) struggle with...

Free Range Gallery
On Tuesday August 31 between 8am and 8pm, a one-day photography installation (with elements of performance) explores life as a single man.
A single night, a single man, a single photographic stand. Jackson Eaton’s third solo exhibition in Perth, entitled Single, will be a photo presentation, created and exhibited within a 24 hour time frame, examining the idea of the ‘one night stand’.
...Eaton will spend the night in the Free Range gallery with a stranger, documenting the experience with Polaroid photographs, before opening the gallery to the public the next day. Photos taken over the course of the previous night will be on display, as part of a site-based installation of the night’s activities.
In line with Eaton’s previous work, Single explores themes of intimacy and identity, boldly questioning wherein the appeal of ‘playing the field’ lies. Treading the hazy line between fiction and reality, Single aims to take a tangible approach to life after the demise of a significant relationship.
Critically, Eaton will use rare Polaroid Fade-to-Black film for the show. The film itself is a discontinued experimental material which, following development, drifts through different colour schemes before finally turning to blackness after 24 hours. Having been created over the course of the night the works in the exhibition will range from near full-colour to near total black and continue to change over time, offering a different viewing experience for each patron.

Play Scar Perth Album Launch

life is noise and Cool Perth Nights present...
OUCH MY FACE (MELBOURNE)
Friday, October 22, at Manhattans.
AND
Sunday October 24, at Mojos.
"This band is the kind of genetic mutation that makes rock feel fun, exciting and a little unhinged in the most appealing of ways" Time Off
Melbourne three-piece Ouch My Face bring their own brand of raw, experimental punk westward for the first time for two sure-to-be-outrageous live shows on Friday, October 22 at Manhattans, and Sunday, October 24 at Mojos.Fronted by the diminutive Celeste Potter, the band has earned a reputation as one of those bands that you simply must see live, destroying stages and leaving burst eardrums, open jaws and blown minds in their wake. This kind of visceral live show has seen Ouch My Face earn opening slots for the likes of The Bronx, Shonen Knife and Handsome Furs, as well as receive glowing reviews by the truckload. With local support coming from Wind Waker and Seams at Manhattans, and The Love Junkies and Hootenanny at Mojos, the stage is set for two face-meltingly awesome nights of chaotic funtimes.Tickets - $17+bf from heatseeker.com.au, Mills and Planet.

THE BEAUFORT STREET FESTIVAL 2010
Life is Noise, The Beaufort Street Network and Town of Vincent present...
Saturday, November 27 in Beaufort Street, Highgate and Mount Lawley.
Beaufort Street has always been at the heart of cool, alternative, independent culture in Perth, so its high time that we got a festival to celebrate the music, art, fashion and food that make the precinct so special.
The Beaufort Street Festival will showcase the cutting-edge talent and diversity of Perths musicians, artists, designers and culinary tastemakers on Saturday November 27.
Perth's cultural hub will come alive with unique, quirky and stylish displays of bands, temporary art exhibitions and fashion parades, with the action taking place on the streets, in shops, cafes, bars and laneways.
The festival is the brainchild of the Beaufort Street Network, a collective of local businesses and residents, and they're looking for help to make the event a representation of all that the Beaufort Street precinct has to offer. Accordingly, the Network is putting the call-out for community involvement.
If there's something youd like to see be part of the festival, or if youd simply like to volunteer your time, contact Festival Director Dave Cutbush on 0400 498 362 or at festival@beaufortstreet.com.au.

PICA's Winter Exhibitions
loads coming up at pica ..
PICA is pleased to present three exciting new exhibitions over the winter months.
Rounds is a group exhibition, featuring works by some of Western Australia's most exciting young artists. Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, this exhibition takes over PICA's ground floor and deals with the idea of peer influence.
Upstairs in the Westend Gallery is a solo exhibition by respected WA artist Bevan Honey, which include massive structures knitted out of cray pots, drawings and a burn-out machine!
In the screen space is the first ever screening in Australia of Spanish/German artist Ignacio Uriate's work: The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow. Winslow may be familiar to some as the star of the 80s Police Academy films with the unique 'sound effects' talent. This film is accompanied by a series of prints.
i demand to know the dates of these exhibitions!

The Blue Room & Side Pony Productions Present
the pride
From the director of 2009's Heart of Gold, independent production house Side Pony Productions present their sixth theatrical production, The Pride at The Blue Room Theatre from 1 - 18 September, before touring to Brisbane Festival's BF10 Under The Radar curated fringe festival.
Mapping the social patterns of a lion’s life onto human characters dressed as lions (impressively crafted by Esther Sandler), The Pride further cements Side Pony Productions’ signature style: visually striking, black comedy at its darkest.
The Pride is directed by Zoe Pepper, whose previous works include Heart of Gold, The Manic Pony, Scarecrow, and Motor City Blues; and features the talents of Brendan Ewing (The Red Shoes, Antigone), Russell Leonard (Equus) and Adriane Daff (BSSTC’s 2010 HotBed Ensemble, Yellow Moon, The Shape of Things).

Schvendes have a new vdeo clip
It's for their new tune Lay the noose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxnYFo_Ys3I
Schvendes are a bunch of ghostly murder balladeers from Western Australia. This time round, they're offering a creepy tale set in one of Australia's most notorious worker's clubs. If you think you know where this clip is going, I assure you a surprise awaits. Delightful or damming - whatever you make of this, we hope you enjoy.

Exhibitions Opening
Fremantle Arts Centre
Friday 23 July, 6:30pm
To be opened by Josh Byrne, Environmental Scientist and Presenter/Writer for ABC’s Gardening Australia.
Exhibitions continue until Saturday 19 September.
Fashioning Now: changing the way we make and use clothes
Australian designers Romance was Born, Issey Miyake and other high-profile practitioners prove that sustainability and fashion can coexist in this international exhibition.
Sustainability is becoming integral to the way clothing is produced, used and discarded. Fashioning Now explores various methods that are rooted in low-impact production. Fashioning Now includes garments, textile objects, photography, illustration and video.
Curated by Alison Gwilt, Course Director, Fashion and Textile Design, University of Technology, Sydney, and Timo Rissanen, Assistant Professor, Fashion Design and
Sustainability, Parsons the New School of Design, New York. With contributions by Alex Martin; Alison Gwilt; Bijan Sheikhlary; Helen Story, Issey Miyake (from the collection of Dr Gene Sherman); Jennifer Shellard; Kate Fletcher; Mike Betts and Mark Holt, Better Thinking; Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, Romance was Born; and Timo Rissanen.
Nairn Scott: The Glomesh Project
Gold is the ultimate status symbol which resonates across history and all cultures. Valuable gold fob watches and lavish candelabra sit alongside gloriously cheap nick-nacks from the Two Dollar Shop. Meticulously printed on hand-gilded paper, Scott bestows an elegance on the enduring and the disposable, the real and fake. The playful interchange of Scott’s ‘pick-and-mix’ aesthetic exposes the folly of equating good taste with social status.
Scott is represented by James Dorahy Project Space, Sydney
Mark Parfitt: Dream Bore
Inspired by the humble bore, Perth artist Mark Parfitt celebrates the life supply of more than 80,000 suburban backyards. His own bore made redundant, Parfitt seeks alternative uses for this Western Australian icon. Assuming the self-reliant mindset of so many ‘can-do’ homeowners, Parfitt converts his home-made bore into an underground garden. Dream Bore is a fond and humorous application of recycling and reinvention to this backyard staple. The garden is accompanied by his exploratory drawings and diagrams and an artists’ book by Jamie Macchiusi (WA) and Gemma Weston (WA).
Parfitt is represented by Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth. Supported by the Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant which is a NAVA initiative, mad e possible through the generous
sponsorship of Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and through the support of the Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts
Vera Möller: darkrooming
Vera Möller (VIC) creates an eerie and luminous installation in which over 3,000 components glow and oscillate. In what Möller has characterised as a ‘museum of fictional species’, strange, organic forms are withered and calcified, accentuating the alien qualities of nature. Informed by her studies in theology and microbiology, Möller’s fantastical work is simultaneously bathed in an atmosphere of decline while predicting the emergence of new aberrant life.
Represented by Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane; Sophie Gannon Gallery, Melbourne; and Tim Olsen Gallery, Sydney
